@bkeske I had asked about the reissue Pere Ubu on Fire Records if they had been remastered.  You mentioned there was no indication either way on the jacket.

From Fire’s website:

“For this reworking, Paul Hamann at Suma has transferred from the original 2-track analogue mix tapes to digital at the highest resolution available which, is at least four times the resolution of the original. The tracks have carefully been re-mastered by sonic architect Brian Pyle so as to capture the unique qualities within.”

This would have been sometime before September 2017 as Paul died in mid-September.

I haven’t picked up any of them yet to compare with the original pressings.

@pops2  + 84  for the Smithereens

worked security in the pit at the Moore Theater in Seattle circa. ‘88? My memory gets kinda fuzzy in that chapter of my life.  Also was blessed to witness The Cramps from the same vantage point at the Moore.  Poison Ivy cemented my lust for redheads and Gretsch guitars (& amps, I have 5 from 1959 to 200? 2 modern executives and 3 playboys).

Did I over share?

If you’ve not enjoyed the dulcet tones of Mr. Roberts guitar, I suggest you avail yourself to the pleasure.  Though you’ve heard him 100’s of times, sans attributions.

@sourpuss123 , no kidding I’ve heard Howard Roberts but not known it. Excerpt from wiki:

Cool, worth checking him out—thanks!

@tomic601  Thx. Hopefully my grading scale can be useful information too many others.

@bslon  Yes, one of the great pop/rock/country recordings of the 1970's.

@puffball08

From Fire’s website:

To clarify, there are no additional notes on the jacket itself, which is what I meant. After asking, I did think of going to their website to see if there was any additional info, but you have done that, so thanks for that.

I do not have those particular originals any longer, so cannot compare either. I will say they do sound very good regardless.

I have no problem with original pressings, and prefer them and seek them out, (see all my original classical recordings), but having been so disappointed by many original pressing Discogs purchases before, I felt safer going with a new copy instead to insure vinyl quality. I am not disappointed.

It is good to know Paul Hamann was involved.

@bkeske Brian-no offense meant.  I just happened to wandering through Fire's website looking for something else and came upon the Pere Ubu information.

Further digging revealed that Paul Hamann embarked on the Ubu remastering around the end of 2016.  He had pretty much concluded the project in February or early March of 2017.  By that time, Paul's health was deteriorating rapidly.  To his credit, he really did work right up to the end.  And we lost so much with his passing including Suma.

@bkeske Brian-no offense meant.

None taken. My ’matter of fact’ style at times may have inferred that, but no.

It is interesting that Discogs does list Suma as being the recording studio of record on the Fire reissues (which I did check). Perhaps someone did their homework and knew that Suma (Paul) had some involvement. That is a good thing IMO. I have a feeling Fire may have wanted to keep the cover sleeve as original as possible, so provided no additional info regarding the remastering.

Having the same concerns, i questioned @boxer12 about these Fire releases, and he gave them a thumbs-up, so that was good enough for me 😉

@mammothguy54 Good luck at Daedelus. Don't let him sell anything called Apollo 13!

Re-spinning recent purchases:

Joan Armatrading - S/T

Art Blakey - Moanin'

Steve Ray Vaughn - In Step (Still WOW!)

Brian - i have the 45 rpm version of The Three headed my way from a reputable seller from …..Ukraine…. a first for me….

Just returned from the airport.  I received an email from Lou (owner of Daedalus) that he came down with the flu.  He had a test for COVID and that was negative, fortunately.  Just the flu.  So, we postponed my visit for 1 week.

I guess that I'll be working on the bathroom now.  Wallpaper removal completed but before painting my wife decided that we need to strip, sand, and refinish the cabinetry.  Get out the power sander...

I'll spin some vinyl later today in order to provide some sanity.

My original pressing has been ordered. Jim, had I know you were going to get the 45, I may have waited and begged the one you have off of you.😁

That album really does interest me. Will be looking forward to receiving it.

That’s tough Joel, but glad he doesn’t have COVID. Getting all excited then let down. Oh well, they ain’t going nowhere (actually, I assume they are all made to order).

Brian - it appears the 45 rpm is cut from the protection tape copy, as perhaps the 1978 release ? My 33 1/3 is a 1976. Fun.

Listened to 1-6 last night. Will finish with 7,8,&9 tonight. Not sure why, but of them all, the 4th was really pleasing to me last evening. Stuck between 3 and 5, I don’t think it gets enough accolades. Fun, and very enjoyable.

@karlbee just the new math of a direct to disc cut in 1975 and released in 1976, proved popular, they wore the stampers out….and….

Have you heard it ?

Crosby - If Only ( 50 th anniversary remaster ) So far…..wow… compared to my German pressing a complete layer of grunge has been removed, treble a bit more tipped, Lesh bass lines so much better articulated…nice…

@pierce911  Congrats on the stage

@pierce911 Nice phono, I have the 9.0X version and it continues to amaze. It took about 40 hours to sound its best, but like you found it’s good just out of the box. Congrats!

@tomic601 That’s an enjoyable LP Jim!

Yeah @pierce911

Hope you continue to comment on the ModWright. What phono did it replace?
