in arrears;
James Taylor - Flag ( MoFi )
The Band - Cahoots ( 50 th Aniv )
now playing
Tony Joe White - Homemade Ice Cream ( 45 RPM Acoustic Sounds )
@j_husker I’m not a fan of this smoothness you mentioned in the Analog Productions’s copy. I always prefer the more "raw" versions. I was at a great demo of Acoustic Sounds' before and afters and almost always preferred the original—clicks and all. |
@reubent 👍 I have braced 4hx3w’s full of records and they’re fine. With the 1x3’s screwed across the back and the whole thing attached to the house I think the 5x5s will be ok. Best thing would be to screw a plywood back onto them but I haven’t gone that far. 5x5 is just going to be a lot more space efficient.

Cheating on my TT tonight, but I just can't help myself... You guys may know that I'm a sucker for funky organ music. My buddy was over on Saturday night and whipped this one out on me. Playing some select tracks this evening via Spotify streaming: Brian Auger's Oblivion Express Feat. Alex Ligertwood – "Live In Los Angeles" Brian Auger and funky organ music forever!

@spiritofradio Have you heard the version of Górecki |
@spiritofradio - Wasn't really suggesting anything, but I know it's going to be a lot of weight when you get up to a 5x5. What's the largest Kallax you've used to date? And did you fill it? I think I would be concerned about filling the shelves completely, unless you've done it successfully before. When I built my 4x2, I glued and screwed it for a bit more confidence. It feels very solid. Instead of the back brace like you use, I cut a 2x4 to the length of each shelf and glue in into the back edge of the shelf (standing on edge). The 1.5" depth of the 2x4 makes a perfect backstop for the LPs, leaving the front edge on the LP sticking out the front about 1/2" making it easier to pull the records out when they are stuffed tightly into the shelves. Good luck with everything. Send us a pic when it's up and loaded. |
Tonight I have the pleasure of comparing the 2022 AP version of Miles’ Someday My Prince Will Come to the 1961 OG copy from my Father-in-law’s collection. My findings are as follows: The Analogue Productions 2022 disc is obviously much quieter and mixed really “smooth” for lack of a better word. It is extremely easy to listen to. My 1961 copy does contain a few pops and clicks, although not bad at all considering the age. This record to me sounds a little more raw, the bass notes are not as smooth as the new one, but they do seem to have more oomph to them. I think I’ll keep them both. |
Hey Tom. I have several other IKEA Kallax shelves full of records and some of the predecessor model (forget the silly name). They’re pedestrian but are the perfect size for records. I think they average about 75 records per section. So, this shelf might hold about 1,800. That many records is a lot of weight so I added the wood braces/backstops. I do this on the 3-wide shelves too. Might need to leave some squares open for lighter stuff on the 5 wide. Is that what you were suggesting? |
@spiritofradio - What does that hold? About 2000-2500 LPs? Are you going to fill it up? Wonder what the total weight would be? I use the Ikea Kallax too, but only a 4Wx2H version. Works nicely for me. |
@mammothguy54 I read today that the MC5 are repeat nominee’s to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Way cool you saw their show! And your ears survived!

@sailmed 👍 I believe that at one time it was frequently performed music by orchestras around the world. Maybe not so much the last few years. |
Ordered that album the other day @alexberger . |
@bslon the MC5, wow, I saw them at the Swing Auditorium (I saw tons of concerts there) and they really lit it up. Very heavy hard-rock, and that was the first time I had ever heard of them. They were an opening act for, I forget, who was the lead act. I hope the album is recorded well so you could turn up the volume. That's what the MC5 are meant to be, LOUD. |
@big_greg Glad you enjoyed the Respighi. |
