Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1
@tomic601 No mono cartridge. I'm just not that serious an audiophile. Plays great with the Decca nail.
Roy Harper ‎- Folkjokeopus (Sunset 1969)

Near Mint with no noise. Man, sounds so good on this rig. I saw the 78 year old Harper perform last year in a small pub.
Found inside the cover the six pages of lyrics I'd painstakingly transcribed into a school notebook. There were no websites of lyrics back then. Bittersweet.
@noromance hey,  Roy puts me in mind of Al Stewart.  Never heard but, is there any connection there?
@spiritofradio Different type of vibe but they did play in Les Cousins in London back in the day.
Eureka Brass Band of New Orleans ‎- Jazz At Preservation Hall I (Atlantic 1966)

Street dance jazz. You can really hear 20s swing in there.
@noromance yes. I streamed a couple of Roy’s albums this afternoon and evening outside by the fire pit and had myself one of those strange experiences listening to music you’ve pretty sure you’ve never heard before but somehow reaches down into the recesses of memory and familiarity.  Not exactly Deja vu, just digging it.  Anyway, listened to “collection “ and his Folkjokeopus, which, you gotta admit sounds a lot like al in his early days before he started coming over here with his more commercial offerings.  Anyway, great stuff.  Thanks for the inspiration.

Albert Cummings
Believe

recorded at Muscle Shoals and it’s definitely atmospheric.  Pregame!  Got a ticket to see his show tonight at the ancient but recently revived Alberta Rose.  Most excellent small venue.  Maybe he’ll sign my record....
Boxer thanks for the jolt....

Low - The Great Destroyer

this is on my top 12 desert island discs....

love the layers of compression and grunge.... tubes overdriven into blue plasma....
@spiritofradio Collection seems to be some Amazon repackaging of The Sophisticated Beggar, his first album. I guess it sounds a bit like Al Stewart the way The Monkees sound like the early Beatles. ;-)

FolkJokeOpus is the third and quite different. If you want something early and out there, Come Out Fighting Genghis Smith is as stoned blue collar English as you’ll get.

Then there is the more anthemic I Hate The White Man.
Low ‎- Things We Lost In The Fire (Tugboat 2001)
Low ‎- Secret Name (Kranky 1999)

Prefer their slower, trippier output. I used hang with a girl by the fireplace listening to this. And we all know where that goes.
@spiritofradio I do like me some Al by the way. I'll spin some later. I've a few of his records. Off the top of my head, Past, Present / Zero She Flies ("Said the apple to the orange...") / Modern Times... um.. maybe another...
@noromance hanging by the fire like that could lead to mono after stereo !
Back in the land of vinyl with a few discs that have arrived... cleaning will commence with happy hour
@noromance

I don’t know much at all about that scene (have some nick drake of course) and aside from my two oldest friends and myself don’t know anybody who owns or has even heard, let alone likes, early al Stewart. When I got to college and put on bed-sitter images, et. al. they’d come by my dorm room and make barfing noises.
Anyway, thanks for turning me on to Roy’s music. I hope I didn’t give the impression that I think his work is derivative of Al’s. Maybe just appealing to me in a similar way. I’m almost old enough to appreciate the context and have always liked this kind of thing (vs. more pop stuff). Roy seems to have a lot of integrity and well respected musician friends. Maybe he held out against commercialism and didn’t get to be so well known. That would sure be admirable to me. Will check out the other suggestions of your favorites of his when I’m in a sufficiently folky mood swing.
Boxer12 man RSD is such a crapshoot

I have spent an enjoyable evening at the Warfield, so this is a nice memory jogger....
@weegoody  @klaatuzero - Welcome to the " Whats on your turntable tonight?" thread. Keep 'em coming.....

Every Picture Tells a Story
MOFI silver edition

@tomic601
this was first listen, SQ is good, the music leans towards the blues, I will have to give it more time,
it was recommended to me by a person with a different taste in music so I want to give it a good listen, it didn’t grab me on first play though
@tomic601 No mono with that one. But I did get it from another.

Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps (Reprise 1979)
One of my all time favorites. Sounds great.
@tomic601
I liked the first disc of that Warfield release, I found a noticeable drop in quality on the second, I don’t know if this is common on all units but I was disappointed with mine, first night sounds good though
Ha! And forgive me IF I told this story before...

sneaking back into dorm at prep school, faculty door open on my floor. New Neil Young album wafting down hall at low volume.. “ my my, hey hey “

I stopped in to give teacher tip of the hat and he invited me in for a listen to the entire album AND a Rye

cool dude..
@j_damon I saved disc two for another time but thanks for heads up - I will check that out.

imo oh babe on side B first night is super weak vocal - down 3-6 db but I am a picky B-/:;()$& !!!!!!
@j_damon  - I love "Every Picture Tells a Story". It's in my top 10 favorite rock albums, without a doubt. I don't recall the author, but it was rated #1 best rock album in a book of the top 500 rock albums of all time. For me, it will never top "Who's Next", but it pretty darn good IMHO.
