@spiritofradio

 I have just one REL sub (S/812) and find it to do exactly what you describe.  I would love to have two of these subs but physical space and room layout does not permit.  My settings are very low, about 40hz, and around 10:00 o'clock on the level/gain.  It's just right with bass slam directly from the middle when the recording calls for it..  And deep bass in a big open area when the recording calls for it.

The more I have improved the system over the past year I have found needing to lower the crossover setting and reducing the gain.  It's about right, now.  However, I tend to believe that after my new speakers arrive (still about 7 weeks out) and are fully broken in I will need to lower crossover by about 5hz.  We shall see, or, hear.

Enjoy your latest setup.

@big_greg

Good night for Nils. His electric guitar work on Cry Tough is as equally impressive as his acoustic guitar on Live.

Also, you had a great run going on ELO. I had played Out of the Blue yesterday afternoon.

The Claremont Quartet w/Joanna Nickrenz, piano
Schoenberg - Ode To Napoleon Buonaparte For String Quartet, Piano, And Reciter, Op. 41
Webern - String Quartet, Op. 38
Stravinsky - Concertino For String Quartet & Three Pièces For String Quartet
Nonesuch 1968

Prague String Quartet
Dvořák - String Quartets No. 8 & No. 10
Deutsche Grammophon 1976, German release

The positive increase in midrange presence and overall openness I’m hearing after the last several changes I made over the last several months, have me adjusting my sub settings again. This has never failed. Anytime I have a significant upgrade in SQ, I always benefit from addressing the sub settings.

The PPT paste sounds amazing. Along with it and the Omega + Mats, I’m listening at much lower volume now, Around 9:00, whereas use to be at least 10:30. Pretty amazing  The OL belt  and the Townshend Pods. Seems like everything is working together.

I was listening to the Mark Knopfler album while adjusting. I’m hearing another layer of his voice now that never seemed present before.

Been listening to sides 3 & 4 of Down the Road Wherever

Mark Knopfler. Very, very good!!!

@spiritofradio  This is a much better recording:

Chausson
Trio Pour Piano, Violon Et Violoncelle, Op. & Pièce Pour Violoncelle Et Piano, Op. 39
Jean-Claude Pennetier, piano
Régis Pasquier, violin
Roland Pidoux, cello
Harmonia Mundi 1984, French release

@spiritofradio

I’m interested in that Muir String Quartet Chausson.  What do you think?

It’s nice to have in the collection, but, for a DMM pressing, it’s not really very impressive SQ-wise. It’s good, but not great. The performance is better than the recording, I’ll say that.

@slaw interested in you thoughts on Cadence, Fremer had a bit to say, but give it a spin first…

@slaw Thanks!  Guess I’d missed that.  Found your posts from a few days back. Very helpful.  Thanks Steve.

The New Basement Tapes - Lost On The River

2014 Harvest Records

An unmistakable T Bone Burnett production.

Need to revise my posted thoughts about the RSD Cat Stevens Harold & Maude. SQ is sort of uneven and not that great on a couple of cuts. Apparently this was remastered for this issue but…. Still a fun record to have though.

Cat Stevens - The Songs From The Original Movie: Harold And Maude 2021 Island RSD

Didn't know there was a remake….

Not up to AP noiselessness, clarity, or tone but it’s fun and sounds pretty good.

@bslon Hey Brother.  Been missing your posts too.  I think you and I here in the West are often the ones turning the lights out on the thread.  I have that same system!   Nice DAC….  We should meet up for RSD at MM.

@reubent Hey thanks for the recommendation on David Grey. I just know his radio favorites but will check out that second? Album.

re: Teriko, I think we’ve mentioned it here before.  I really like that record too.

@noromance @tomic601 I added a singe medium-sized REL to my Quads in the basement. Put it in a strong front corner. I set it to about 68Hz and 9:30 volume. It does add nice bass to recordings that have low bass but more important to me is a fleshing out of the midrange. Gives the quads more body. It’s not low passed - just connected to the speaker terminals on the EA-230. Several people have recommended that I use 2 REL subs with the quads. I’m sure it would be even better but I get no imbalance from having just one in the corner. In fact I hear bass everywhere, including behind me when it’s there on the recording. On Ray Brown’s Soular Energy it’s right there center and slightly back in the sound stage.

Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue.  I picked this up at Half-Price Books for 3 bucks a few years ago.  Sounding great!

@slaw Steve, I’ve been in the Caribbean island hopping for the past couple of weeks. My system…ha!

I’ve been checking the thread occasionally, lots of good music being played and missing the main system after reading the posts.

I’ll be back home this weekend playing records, it’s good to be missed. Thanks!

@bkeske

Thanks for the information on Deutsche Grammophon. I thought you would be the resident expert on the subject and it's much appreciated.

Also, thanks for the info on Phillips and Decca/London. I'll look out for those labels on my searches.

Tom

@tgilb

RE: Deutsche Grammophon - One word, inconsistent. Most/many can be very good, some, not so much. Doesn’t mean they are not all ‘good’, they are, but some are stellar, and some not so much.

In contrast, in relation to another larger EU label, Philips, as example, in the classical recording realm, IMO is constantly very good to excellent. Same with DECCA/London.

Brewer and Shipley - "Tarkio"

I bought this mint/sealed at Plaid Room Records about 3 years ago for $5.99! I mean, even if I didn't like it so much, hard to go wrong for $6, especially considering it contained their big hit - "One Toke Over the Line". Much to my surprise, it's a pretty darn good album. I got a bargain!

The Music Group Of London
Vaughan Williams - String Quartet No 1 In G Minor & String Quartet No 2 In A Minor
His Masters Voice 1973 UK release

David Gray - "Mutineers"

It's funny. I'm a fan of David Gray and I loved his breakout album - "White Ladder". Matter-o-fact, I used to consider it one of my desert island albums. When "Mutineers" was released, and a tour scheduled, a digital copy of "Mutineers" was provided to all ticket purchasers. Being a big fan, of course I purchased tickets and downloaded the free digital album. When I first heard it, I wasn't so sure about it. But, I gave it another listen, or two, and it started growing on me. Went to the show and was really happy to hear the show open with the complete new album, end to end. It was fantastic! Mesmerizing even!

Fast forward several years, and I finally got a copy of the album on vinyl. And all I can say is that it is fantastic! For me, easily surpasses "White Ladder" and as an additional benefit, the sound quality is much better than the version of "White Ladder" I have on vinyl.

Anyway, for any David Gray fan, it's a "must have".  For anyone else who likes haunting, airy vocals, interesting lyrics, and something just a little different, check it out. Highly recommended... by me.
