@reubent 40th Moving Pictures isn’t/wasn’t a Record Store Day title.   There are plenty left.   There are 3 (vinyl) versions.  1.  the record  2. A 4&1/2 side package with excellent bonus material (live) and some swag.  And 3, a super deluxe package with the records and seedees and extra souvenir type stuff.   I bought the first 2.

I had the FM Montrose and it was a good pressing. However, musically it just didn't move me. I wanted to like it and tried several times. But it never resonated with me, and off to the Plaid Room trade-in pile it went. Don't recall what I got in that particular trade, but I hope it was worth it...

ok Tom but you probably just didn’t play it loud enough…

Lightnin' Hopkins - Goin' Away

Isaac Stern – None But The Lonely Heart - Isaac Stern Plays Great Violin Favorites (Columbia Masterworks 1963)

This is a blast. Front seats sound.

Erich Bender Children’s Choir – The Most Beautiful German Children’s Songs (Philips 1962)

@slaw - I somehow missed RSD. Didn't know about it until Sunday and all the good stuff was gone. Really, I think I only wanted the "Moving Pictures - 40th" and "America".

What did you get?

Obernkirchen Children's Choir – Folk Songs And Fairy Tale (Angel 1957 mono)

Sort of sad that these kids are all old or passed now.

Evgeny Mravinsky conducts Tchaikovsky - Symphonies No. 4 In F Minor, Op.36 / No. 5 In E Minor, Op. 64 / No. 6 In B Minor, Op. 74 "Pathétique". Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. Deutsche Grammophon 4LP box reissue, 1974.

How's the VDH cartridge sounding?

@slaw I really like it.  That said, I currently have my Kiseki Blue N.S. on the Sapphire.  The VDH is taking a break.

Speaking of Plaid Room Records; Was there yesterday and their prices for used records has gone up quite noticeably. They had quite a few used records priced $49 - $299. Obviously valuable records, but jeez... The stuff that used to be $2.99 -  $5.99 is now $7.99 - $12.99. And the dollar bin is now the $3 bin. :~( I still love the store and have tremendous respect for the owners, but I'll have to be more selective now.

Friday Music Montrose is good    Better than the alternatives anyway.   I also have a FM Billy Cobham “Spectrum “ that if memory serves is pretty good.   The important thing is just to have these two records because the music is so exceptional.

Definitely must have recordings!

@reubent +1 how do you like your 40th compared to your original?

@spiritofradio - Hey James, I'll let you know later this evening. I'm going to clean both and do a quick comparison. From memory, I think the new one is just a bit better, but I'm curious to know with some certainty myself.

BTW, if there is a noticeable difference, I may invest in in the "Moving Pictures" 40th. Unfortunately, I missed it on RSD.

@slaw @big_greg

Can’t remember how many Friday Music lps I have but two that stand out are Kansas "Leftoverture" remastered by Joe and Kevin. "The Yes Album" 45 rpm box.

America "S/T" is too compressed.

@big_greg

And a Friday Music reissue is setting the bar pretty low.

Agree, I’ve had issues with every LP from this label, low SQ and warps. Disappointing.

+1 @big_greg   Thx for the info. I have 2 VG garage sale finds that might be original pressings. Several months ago played the album that appeared in better condition the SQ was flat/muddy and anemic. Will find and clean the other and hope for better SQ.

Boston - Boston, CBS Master Disk 1/2 Speed Master.  Besides the sleeve getting mangled during shipping, it didn't really sound all that great.  I have a Friday Music reissue that sounds better.  And a Friday Music reissue is setting the bar pretty low.

RUSH - "Permanent Waves" - 40th Anniversary Edition

...one likes to believe in the freedom of music

John Barbirolli conducts Mahler - Sinfonie Nr. 9 D-Dur. Berliner Philharmoniker. EMI/His Masters Voice reissue, guessing mid-70’s, originally 1964. German release

Last night...

Ennio Morricone - The Mission
Jade Warrior - Floating World
Loreena McKinnett - Live Paris/Toronto

I hear you on the weird channel on Jimi's vocals. I have experienced this on many LPs of the 60s and 70s. I'm able to kind of tune it out when the music being played is superior.

Great day off of spinning vinyl:

Pat Travers - Black Pearl

Reece Wynans and Friends - Sweet Release (great music and great sound)

Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I Might See

The Montgomery Brothers - Groove Yard

The Dave Bailey Sextet - One Foot in the Gutter

My copy of Are You Experienced arrived last week, but I have not yet played it.  I always had the stereo version so I am accustom to the one-channel of Jimis' voice on those cuts.  Still dealing with and nursing our dog; he's not doing well and struggling, but I just can't make the call yet as his mind is still so good.  Soon, though!

I haven't played my hi-fi for some time now.  Maybe later today.  As always, I get ideas of what to play directly from this thread.  You guys are the best!

My copy’s en route, hope it’s good like @dougthebiker’s. I like getting the stereo versions, if it’s too weird I can go with mono switches on my pre pre or preamp.

True, mono would get rid of that very strange decision to put Jimi’s voice in only one channel on the first cut on each side.

Good to know @dougthebiker . I wasn’t as excited about this stereo version. Wish I’d gotten the mono.

Just got the Acoustic Sounds remake of Jimi Hendrix "Are You Experienced."  Totally remastered on premium vinyl.  Better than Qobuz version. Listening on my Well-Tempered Reference TT.  Extremely quiet background.  No obvious pops or clicks.

I wish the guitar finale on Starship Troopers (Würm) could have gone another 5 minutes.
