Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1

I bought a good pile of used records recently.  These are a few of them that I played today.

The Moody Blues  -  Seventh Sojourn   One of the better recorded albums from the Moody Blues.  And a great album of music, too.

Al Di Meola  -  Splendido Hotel   An excellent group of musicians joined Al in making this very good double album.

Earl Klugh and Bob James  -  Two Of A Kind   This is a gold stamped "Promo" copy.  An excellent quality production and SQ.  Very enjoyable music, so easy to listen to and relax.  And I got it for just $5 plus shipping.

Amadeus Quartett : Beethoven Streichquartette - String Quartets ‧ Quatuors A Cordes Op. 127‧130‧131‧132‧133‧135. Deutsche Grammophon 4LP box 1963, German release

i always thought the records were underrated as a guitar band, and i prefer their (marginally) harder edged second  record (plus i can't listen to "teenarama" without cringing).

on my queue, in the same vein:

richard x. heyman, cornerstone

myracle brah, live on planet eartsnop

dm3, garage sale compendium

@bdp24 I enjoy your stories, thanks for sharing.

I much prefer that first record over their second, especially like how the cymbals come in at intervals on “Starry Eyes”. That really grabs me, you as a drummer maybe not so much. Excellent Power Pop for sure! Funny that you mentioned Moon Martin, I had that in last night’s queue but lost steam late.

@bslon: Excellent! I too just found a copy of the Records' self-titled debut, as well as it's followup (which introduced new member Jude Cole, who had previously been a member of Moon Martin's band). Excellent Power Pop.

The Records' main songwriter/singer John Wicks was in the audience at the Emitt Rhodes live appearance I participated in (the 1997 Poptopia Festival in L.A.), and I ended up connecting with John and doing some shows with him in the following couple of years. A very sweet guy, and a damn fine songwriter. He unfortunately passed away a few years back.

@bdp24 @bkeske

I didn't have the heart to say it but since Eric did ......... I learned my lesson too late on the Four Men With Beards releases.

A Drop In The Gray / Certain Sculptures
1985 Geffen

An outstanding record by a band you've never heard of…

Roxy Music - Country Life. This is a half speed mastered at Abbey Road German import. Sound quality is very nice

@bdp24

Ha! It was used, and actually got some of the higher ratings vs other releases on Discogs (including MOV), so took a chance. The pressing is fine, and pretty darn quiet. SQ-wise, it sounds fine, but to be honest, it has been years since I heard the original pressing, so it is very hard to compare.

@bkeske: Uh oh. Have you opened the Burrito Deluxe LP yet? (Or is it used?). 4 Men With Beards are notorious for poor sounding LP reissues (low-rez digital sources, poor mastering and pressing quality).

Intervention Records has their repress of Burrito Deluxe scheduled for the 2nd quarter of 2022, mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed at RTI. Their reissue of the the first Burrito Brothers album is excellent (I have it and an original, bought at the time of it's initial release).

Also just arrived…

Flying Burrito Bros. - Burrito Deluxe. 4 Men With Beards reissue 180gm 2008. Originally A&M 1970

My second Manassas LP arrived a little while ago. Cleaning and spinning next…

Stephen Stills / Manassas - Down The Road. Atlantic 1973

@loomisjohnson

for a man of your impeccable taste

Good one! Especially since I almost ran with The Fugs last night! 😁

Enjoyable day off:

Duke Ellington & Johnny Hodges - Back to Back

Miles Davis - Bitches Brew

Robin Trower - Bridge of Sighs

Widespread Panic - Space Wrangler

Reece Wynans and Friends - Sweet Release

Now it's time for yard chores...

bslon, for a man of your impeccable taste grand funk and starship kinda throw me for a loop. gotta listen to the live butterfly, though.

@carlsbad Physics at Chicago: Now that’s legit.  I was at the GSB in 84 & 85.  Physics.  Cool.   Can you help me with my turntable arm…?

@spiritofradio  I did my time at the UofC in the late 70s graduating in Physics in 1980.  Remember Aliotta Haynes and Jerrimiah, Lake Shore Drive?

John Mayhall w/Eric Clapton (also John McVie on bass) - Blues Breakers. London reissue 1977, originally 1966

Moby Grape - S/T

1967/ Late 80's Columbia Repress

A few of the songs are a bit bright on the highs but most of the songs sound pretty good other than those exceptions.
