speaker recommendations for Ayre V-5xe?

Hi All,

I recently picked up this amp used and have a Lumin T2 connected direct

I'd like to try a couple of standmount speakers in the 5-10k price range that would be considered an ideal match for the amp to really see what it can do

open to all ideas, was thinking Dynaudio heritage specials, the new Fritz Purifi model, Bowers 805d4

will likely get the Ascend Sierra-2EX v2 to start as it is relatively inexpensive and then go from there

really seeking a specific model if possible that is known to have synerygy with this amp

thanks in advance

I have been thinking about giving one of these amps a try at some point. Ayre is often recommended for Vandersteens, so I'd suggest the VLR-CT with the Sub 3.

the amp seems to have alot of soul and musicality

can't really figure out why it wont play from standby mode

seems to lack bass for its size and wattage

not familiar with that Vandy model, will research it

Standby means standby the amp shouldn't play. And what speakers are you pairing it with that you're experiencing this lack of bass?

at the moment sonus faber lumina v

parasound halo a23 and Anthem mca225 were noticeably better with bass

Didn’t you say on your other post that you have the Harbeth HL5Plus? Did you sell them?

Forget the Ascend Sierras and just buy these.  You may well never feel the need to upgrade, and JA speakers sound sublime with Ayre electronics.

yes Harbeth's 30.2XD's and The superHL5plus XDs tried and sold

they were very nice, I have some mild criticisms better suited to a harbeth discussion, let's just say not my cup of tea

those JA look very nice

the Ascend's pricepoint allows me to try and buy regardless as a stop gap, custom seas driver, raal ribbon, and Klippel measurements, appears to be a level of actual R&D and published measurements beyond alot of the smaller independant companies

You should look at ATC speakers which seem to have the characteristics you are looking for. My dealer, Audio Connection is a big fan and sells Ayre and ATC,Vandersteen, Proac and Magnepan. Good Luck!

Ayre and Vandy's are a great match. In your budget, a pair of Treo's or Quatro's used, would be great choices.

As Joey pointed out John Rutan (Audioconnection) would be a very good source for information, as he is very familiar with many brands (and, not just the one's he sells). He is on Audiogon and Audioconnection is his tag. Otherwise, call him. I can tell you, honestly, that he is not like most dealers and won't try to sell you something- only provide the best/honest information. And, if you doubt me, just do a search here on Audiogon.

good advice thanks

atc scm 19v2's are definelety on my short list

additionally, the link below ranks the kefr3 very high and the same forum has a review that compares the new meta version sugeesting it is even better

I've got the same amp and use it with B&W, 802D3, very happy with the combination. I can't see that a smaller B&W won't work great as well.

I will 2nd the Vandersteen VLR-CT with Sub3 around $6250 without upgrade finishes, or Vandersteen Treo CT on upper end of your budget.

I also would recommend talking with John Rutan at Audio Connection.  Has been selling Vandy’s forever and is very honest.

the Ascend’s pricepoint allows me to try and buy regardless as a stop gap, custom seas driver, raal ribbon, and Klippel measurements, appears to be a level of actual R&D and published measurements beyond alot of the smaller independant companies

Yeah, no. The Sierras, as good as they are, are not even on the same planet as the JA Prisms I mentioned above. If, for some reason, the Prisms don’t just blow you outta your chair — which they absolutely will — you can turn around and sell them for little or no loss as they’re a great value at the seller’s price. Just do it. You’ll be blown away and will thank me. These speakers are an absolute gift looking you in the face. You better have decent stands that are worthy of speakers at this level, but that’s a discussion for another day. BTW, I’m a hockey player and played many times in “Our home and native land.” Spent many summers in Pointe Au Baril north of Parry Sound and the home of Bobby Orr who transformed the game as a defenseman. Who does that??? Him being horizontal scoring a goal against the Leafs is the best photo — bar none IMHO — in professional sports. Epic. Just epic.

NO!!! Take the JA Prisms over the 805D. Trust me on this. You’ll save $$$ and they’re flat-out better speakers in every way. I worked for Magnolia and have extensive experience with the 805 D3s and have also heard the Prisms and the JA speakers are just better on all levels despite being priced much lower.  I’m a long-suffering Rangers fan BTW and am rooting hard for Vegas in the finals because Florida doesn’t even deserve a hockey team IMHO.  Hockey is way too “woke” for Florida and their Pillsbury Doughboy Governor.  Oops.  Did I just say that out loud? My bad.

I’m settled on speakers but trying to figure out the amp, so go with the Dynaudio Heritage because I’m curious on how they’d pair with Ayer. Oh and because the Dyn’s are amazing. Also a suffering Rangers fan that lives in Florida so I feel your pain x2 Soix.
