In my opinion, the best $2K tube amp you will ever own is a pre-owned Cary, Rocket 88 (R version). They sell for $17-$1800 maybe a few dollars more for a super clean piece with all the boxes, manuals and depending on what tubes come with. It's a KT88 based amp that runs in Triode Class A (30watts x 2) or Ultralinear Class/A/B (60watts x 2). I've used one in the past with both KT88 and EL34s and the amp is super respnsive to those two different power tubes. Find one & buy it... you'll agree. The "R" Version has all the magic. |
I ran a PS Audio S300 with my RP-1 for several years and was very happy, find those for around $1K. Then I found a Quad Artera Stereo for $1.5K and moved to that and also happy. Bryston 3B SST over on USAM in your price range that might be a good match, need to check the specs of course as others have suggested figure out more requirements. One tweak with the RP-1 that also yielded positive results was moving to a set of Mullard tubes. |
