This is a lot of fun thinking back
1985 EPI T/E 100. $200 new. 2-way sealed. I was 15, saved all year for these along with a Yamaha R-3 receiver, and hooked to Technics turntable. Ah the joy.
1993 Klipsch Forte, $800 used. Still have them. They rock. Also purchased a Adcom 555 amp and preamp that year.
2007 Totem Arro $800 used. Still using the venerable Adcom amps. I also had to purchase my 2nd CD player ever, a Cambridge 640C. My original one from 1988 was a Denon 1500. Started having tracking problems 19 years later. |
Late 60's Jensen 12'' three way speaker homemade enclosure with burlap Grills. The burlap was held in strong wind and bleach was thrown at them(Groovy)
Mid-late 70's Sonab OA -12's. 2 way with 4 tweeters(2 towards the listener, 1 towards the back wall & 1 @ 125*s forward off the side wall. The mid driver was up firing @15* s and towards a center listening position. All speakers were on the top surface covered with a heavy screen .
Early 80's Sonab OA-116. 3 way with 6 tweeters, up firing mid- driver plus down firing base driver. This was, is I still have them in my garage the drivers need rebuilding, still a favorite.

Oh, I can't really remember that far back. My father owned two audio installation and service companies after he left Hi-Fi Associates in Miami. My father always gave my younger brother and me a lot of audio equipment. (I got first dibs, since I was older.) Sometimes the equipment was from trade-ins or older pieces that customers abandoned. I absconded with a lot of equipment from the abandoned pile, including two Dyna ST-70's, a Dyna PAS 3 (PAS 3X, IIRC), an HK Citation 16, and a Hafler pre-amp (a kit that the original owner couldn't assemble; with only two inputs wired, the power supply mounted externally, and some of the controls by-passed, it was a nice little pre-amp). When I moved in the mid-80's, I gave those five pieces of equipment to two of my friends, and they continue to pump out some very good sound to this day.
The speakers that I remember owning from thirty-five to twenty-five years ago were several pairs of AR's, including a set of double AR's (I can't remember the model number; maybe the AR 3's), a large Infinity (jumbo bookshelf or small floor-stander) with a ribbon-type tweeter (not great), and a pair of DCM Time Windows (worse than the Infinitys). I think that I even used the AR's in a quadraphonic system for a while.
My father had a pair of JR 149 speakers, a cylindrical aluminium speaker built by Rogers. They had wood tops and bottoms and a foam grill, IIRC. I really became hooked on their sound, and years later, in 1987, I purchased a pair of used KEF 101 Reference Series, which continue to be the best speaker that I have owned, despite their lack of low end. Recently, on audiogon, primarily as backups for my KEF's, I purchased a pair of Linn Tukans and a pair of Spendor S3/5's. I like the Spendors, but they are not as open as the KEF's, IMO.
This week, a friend gave me a pair of KEF C-65's. They are a small vinyl-covered floor-stander with active and passive woofers. They have a weak high-end, a muffled mid-range, and a boomy low-end. They were not one of KEF's better offerings (they retailed for $700.00; it's really a shame). My wife and 12 year old daughter like them. M daughter thinks that they are going in her room. |
And in addition, some Advents. And a pair of Bose 301. A pair of ADS, too (with a metal cabinet, I believe). I'll stop now, or every few minutes I'll remember another pair of speakers.

After purchasing a new home I decided the look of my family room should be clean with simple bookshelf speakers and store away the Def Tech floorstanders.
So, I purchased (5) Mirage Omnisat V.2 speakers, (New), for $200.00 bucks a pop, totaling a grand.
Ladies and gentlemen, this was a big mistake because Wynton Marsalis did not sound like I wanted him to sound while playing through the Mirages. They were very nice for a small speaker, but the omni-directional concept doesn't come close to direct speakers for 2 channel music.
So, I got the approval from the Queen, (MY WIFE), to improve my speaker dilemna. I graduated to the Paradigm Signature 2's, (New), in the piano gloss finish for about $2,000.00. Sweet, sweet sound, but lacked the bottom end I was searching for.
Final conclusion, I have recently traded my Signature 2's up to the Paradigm Signature 6's, (New), in the piano gloss finish for about $3,800.00, (New). Out of all of the speakers I've had the Signature 6's are by far the best bang for the buck!!! |

I've listened to a lot more than I've owned and there are still a few out there I want to try someday (KEF 107.2, KEF 104.2, Ohm Walsh 5, etc). Couldn't afford them when they came out. Thats the great thing about pre-owned gear; one can finally afford them... |
If you liked the older Walshes, you'll love the newer series 3 line. 100's cost under $2000 and sound much like Walsh 5 in the average room. Walsh 5 does more in larger rooms and has level adjustments, but these are not needed for most music in most rooms if you have flexibility in placement, room tuning, etc. (check out my review of the 100's I have posted here which apples to apples compares them to old Walsh 2's and newer Walsh 5's). |

the best impression and the worst desillution, were the spirit by soundcraft absolute zero. with peavey cs200x
the ab-zero when brand new, sounded verry similar to genelec but non metallic, amazing, but when they broke-in 2 days later, were something else, i could never get used to.
but... depends on your ear/brain, what likes more, color or grey sound. "diferent harmonics"
urei 809 with lots of eq, sounds nice, but highs are not detailed enough. becouse the tweeter diaphragm its 1.75-inch
tannoy system 8nfn or 215ii, too much coloration, for my taste.
tannoy system 2 with crown d75, had an amazing out of the speaker sound = 3d mids, but same coloration as the others.
genelec 1030a nice, really nice.
jbl control 1 also nice highs with lots of EQ. weak low end.
behringer truth b2031a grey, not good, the black: nice.
jbl 4206 nice,
but the amp makes a big diference.
mcintosh c32/c33 with jbl 4343 had almost a perfect sound for me, exept the verry collapsing mids.
logitech x-540 , sounds amazing for the price, with just a litle eq.
but the room also makes a big diference.
the crossover also.
its fun to make experiments with passive two way speakers. and make them active with amps and active analog or digital crossovers.
yamaha ns-10/40 uhmm, with lots of eq are nice to my ears.
jbl eon 15g2 , with lots of eq, sounds nice. "the one with the first version of the amp, lm338" but... same 1.75" non detailed highs.
m-audio bx8a, sounds grey, but with lots of eq can sound colored.
krk rp5 sounds nice out of the box, but the rp8 dont like it.
emu.com rp5, uhmmm nice mids, but... highs are piercing but sounds overall too dark. similar to event 20/20 passsive.
alesis monitors, wrong mids, weak harmonics, for my taste.
jbl control 25, with eq sounds nice. a bit cheap, but complete, a bit compressed dynamic range.
i like more the trumpet mids & highs sound, vs. the direct sound, but krk rp5 mk1, are the exeption.
havent heard klipsh copper wooofer with tractrix horns,
but look pretty anyway.
