My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Why did i let go of the Magico M6?
In this video, i go over 5 reasons why.

https://youtu.be/8VNcfQdkPG0

In the meantime, I'm popping 1600 mg ibuprofen for my back. I stayed up until 3am this morning moving the big crates of the speakers that arrived at 10pm last night.
Enjoy the video and stay tuned for more !
Big Wilson. The M6 debacle has WC running back to Wilson as fast as he could, as I had predicted would be the case.

When 7 power amplifiers (3 Gryphon, 2 Pass Labs, Constellation, Audio Research) with msrp aggregate $250k, two elite dacs (dcs Rossini, msb reference) with aggregate msrp north of $100k, who knows how many preamps, stands, cables, power conditioners, room treatments, etc. (probably at least another $100k) and two+ months of grinding STILL fail to allow even minimal acceptance of a $175k speaker to even permit what ALL OF US TAKE FOR GRANTED (long, enjoyable listening sessions) with our own (comparatively modest in most cases), systems .......

there is no other conclusion that can be reached than that the Magico M6 were a disaster for WC.

Unfortunately, was foreseeable. Go read my restaurant analogy review of last Magico he had less than six months ago
Coke and Pepsi, man. I said it day one after first video. Then I mostly held my tongue and just let it play out, not wanting to rain on the parade.
Oops, 8 amplifiers - I forgot Soulution. Damn.

Make it an msrp of $300k amps he went through trying to make Magico listenable for extended listening sessions. Recall I had noted this deficiency, with concern, a couple times early on. Not that WC was complaining about the speakers, but he was not gushing about them and I had noted no posts about long listening, which was unusual for him.

WC easily tried a half million dollars worth of equipment in this Magico experiment, and in his own words (see video), “could never fully engage with the Magico M6 [a $175k speaker]”

I get it. WC won’t bash the speakers because doesn’t want to upset manufacturers, dealers, or his YT subscribers that are Magico fans, but just re-read these last three posts and think about all he tried, in vain, to reach minimal (long term listening) acceptance.

No chance this next speaker is anything but back to his comfort zone.

Edit: Unless WC is a billionaire and this level of expense is literally of trivial consequence to him, then I guess next speaker could be anything.
And even if WC is a billionaire (which is really none of our business - mentioned here just for analysis purposes and laying out the prediction with logical reasoning) and the money means nothing, the absolute struggle he went through trying everything he could think of to make the Magico work and in his own words from video “failing” to be able to get there......that won’t be a road he’ll start again so soon.

He will go back to the sound he loves. Wilson Audio. Easy.
On the contrary, I found the M6 enjoyable with any amplifier tried here.  Its honest neutrality brings out more of the music, which I could listen to for hours, provided the SPL is sensible and natural.  I enjoyed it most on more revealing/neutral amps like the Essence monos.  However, I will admit that I only heard the videos on my computer at 75 dB a foot away, and not at much louder levels Jay heard in his room.

The real issue is a person's acceptance of neutrality and maximum info retrieval which is the requirement for getting the most intellectual appreciation of music.  Some people like me listen intellectually and my enjoyment comes from maximal understanding, the way it is in other aspects of life.  Examples--reading and listening to intellectual discussions and researching details of traveling to new places.  I like to rewind videos and catch what I didn't understand the first time.  Other people prefer to experience the moment without planning, or sit back and lose themselves in the mood of the music.

Recently I corrected the time alignment of my electrostatic tweeter with my main electrostatic speaker.  This made my system even more analytic than before.  Some people would find it even more sterile than before.  Even I had to get used to it.  But very quickly I realized that even more of the music was revealed and understood, so I learned to prefer this new time alignment.
Jay, ibuprofen is dangerous because it causes stomach ulcers, gastritis and fatal bleeding in some cases. Tylenol (acetaminophen) doesn’t cause stomach problems, but it causes liver damage if taken long term. The best and safest solution is Tylenol short term without any alcohol drinking.
My iMac and PC couldn't assess Agon yesterday, probably because the site wasn't secure.  Did anyone else have this problem?  I watched Jay's video directly on YT.
viber6, I could load Audiogon, but the forums were unable to be reached because of a security issue, they finally fixed it.
Oops, there were actually 9 amps (not 8) - there were 3 Pass Labs amps, not 2 (XA60.8, X600.8, X350.8). Damn again.

Didn’t have much time last two months but now going back to carefully listen to the videos that I gave short shrift or didn’t hear at all before.

My ranking so far of the amps used with M6, but I’m only part way through, will update list when finish.

1. Gryphon Antilleon EVO
2. Soulution 530 and Gryphon Essence Stereo (tie)
4. Pass Labs XA60.8

Haven’t listened to the vids with more recent amps yet than those.

Edit:  Liked Kharma setup better than Fyne at dealer but difficult to listen to with microphone clipping.  Bookshelf setup was what you'd expect - less fulfilling than floorstanders.
My iMac and PC couldn't assess Agon yesterday, probably because the site wasn't secure.  Did anyone else have this problem?  I watched Jay's video directly on YT.
i Had the same exact problem...

Damn Kren. I didn't think i had gone through 9 amps with the M6 in two months.
My goal was 10 amps but the last amp is still being built...won't be ready until end of June.

Same problem using Firefox.  I think KREN was kissing so much of Jay's tushy the forum shut itself down out of protest.
Haha, I hope your wife doesn’t read this thread t know how much you’re spending!
Riaa has the best sense of humor here by far.  No doubt about it--objectively true, not personal preference.  The laugh meters spike the quickest after his remarks.  Case closed.
Riaa is jealous that I’m so much younger than he is but go ahead, you two boomers yuck it up, you make a good team ; )
I just predict. No influence from here. Maybe I’ll be wrong.

Why don’t you all make your predictions?

If your pet speaker that cost $175k couldn’t hack it in WC’s room after 9 amps and $500k in msrp pairings not sure why that has anything to do with me, but whatever. I suppose some are mad that I was right, but I don’t take any pleasure in that. I have no skin in the game
Yes...make predictions...here's an additional tip:
This speaker weighs more than the M6...
"I suppose some are mad that I was right, but I don’t take any pleasure in that. I have no skin in the game"

Don't take any pleasure in that? Are you kidding?
The good thing about getting older is the wisdom to know when to keep your mouth shut and not make yourself look like an a**. ...or an a**kisser. Especially in public. Your man crush is DISTURBING!!!

I have NO IDEA how old anybody is except Vibesman and when he graduated High School I was probably starting out in Elementary school. Why would ANYBODY be jealous about somebody else's age?? If anything I wish I was at least 5-10 years older so I could have seen the great Classic Rock bands when they started out instead of catching them on life support.
I mean, yeah I’m glad I was right in the prediction but nothing against Magico or Dagostino or other brands that aren’t my cup o tea.

It’s not me who rendered the indictment on the speaker, and I certainly didn’t know influence WC’s findings,  i just predicted it. To be honest I’ve never heard it in person, so why would I hate it?

there are others here who hate on brands. Not me
Ok buddy. But you attacked me first for no reason. And to your accusation, please quote from even one of my posts where I am kissing WC’s a&&. Just be sure to quote accurately. I don’t think you’ll find one.

WC is probably laughing at how absurd that is - I’ve probably pissed him off more than most
Many of us enjoyed the time Jay spent with the M6's. As he said, the M6's exposed every weakness in his room, electronics etc... Too bad he didn't keep them long enough to really get the most out of them. Wilson (which I also enjoy) seems to be more 'plug in and play' speakers.

It was so nice to not have to read post after post of kren ripping Magico. Thank you for the break kren. I sure hope the next speakers are Wilson's so we can enjoy more restaurant analogies.  kren we are all behind you while you make a run for the #1 spot of most annoying poster on this thread. Well done!
Haha, maybe you guys are right. These last two months were so enjoyable for WC he should just roll the dice again. It’s just his money right?

He shouldn’t pick Wilson cause so boring, right?

maybe he should bring in Magico m9?

wouldn’t that be great?
I don't care what the next speaker will be. I am just happy with anything he brings in. I've never seen anybody so happy as you when a speaker left Jay's room. You've been absolutely giddy all day.
He did say 2 months ago he wanted Sonus Faber rather than Magico but they were back ordered til June.
Maybe he ordered then and getting those now?

Not giddy. I don’t lose any sleep over this thread or his room, haha. Surprised about the amount of $$ and effort spent trying to get a $175k speaker to work? Yeah I definitely was about that.

And after all it doesn’t mean the speakers suck or whatever. Only that WC couldn’t get them to work for him despite throwing half mil at them in parternering equipment
Neck and Neck with Inna at this point on the annoying scorecard. GIDDY is the perfect word...like a little smitten girl with pigtails. A prescription of testosterone is definitely in order.....Vibesman fill the prescription will ya?
Dang, I didn’t realize you were so invested in Magico. You must have really been hoping WC would have liked it better. Ok, I’ll stop talking about them and if I’m right about the next speaker I won’t even gloat.

BTW, what’s your prediction on what the speaker is? Only other person to guess is Dave w Rockport
So if you guys watched my last video, reason #5 should have been clear for most but if it wasn’t then I’ll articulate it here further:
I didn’t engage with the M6 which didn’t allow me to go to bed with it at 4am. I take the blame for it because i simply wasnt prepared to do everything it needed. I didn’t know i had to do new brakes every 3k miles and that the brake job also needs new rotors (not just pads). I didn’t ask the service advisor how much is a brake job and i didn’t know the 30,000 mile service was 4500 dollars. I simply signed the dotted line and was quite excited to drive it.
It was, INDEED, my own fault. But i am a believer that you also learn from your own mistakes so i am happy with that.
Some speakers simply require more of you and some don’t. This doesn’t mean one is better than the other. This just means you have to choose how far you are willing to go to maximize performance. I simply wasn’t going to go far into it (at this time) but the future could be different.
riaa,
Like you, sometimes I wish I were older.  I knew people who heard the greatest violin masters of old.  Fritz Kreisler's heyday was the 1920's.  Listen to his recording on YT of "Meditation" from Thais.  Today's greatest violinists like 76 year old Itzhak Perlman are like nursery school savages compared to Kreisler.  The 30 year old performers of today are mere infants who lack toilet training.  The closest I ever came was hearing the greatest concertmaster of all time, Mischa Mischakoff in 1975 at his age of 80 at a private concert.  I told him how much I loved his recordings of the 1940's.
Jay - I haven't read every post here, but perhaps, just perhaps - you have come to the point where you are realizing that the road to musical nirvana is not necessarily paved with big inefficient speakers and huge solid-state amplifiers.  Maybe it's time to explore another path.  Don't worry - it's really expensive too.
Here is the first clip of the new speaker:

https://youtu.be/8x1kz-YwGKI

This was recorded with my phone mic. Not the external shure Mic.
rh67,
It would be interesting to hear that Oceanway horn speaker.  Have you heard it?  Unfortunately, Jay would be unlikely to consider it, since it is largely unknown and wouldn't have easy resale.  This is a shame, because the best products are less popular, but the popular lower performers are hyped up with marketing so they have better resale.  Jay wants his YT channel to show the best sound, but his business model is to cater to many people with popular expensive brands whose performance is eclipsed by less popular items.
Hard to tell from a YT video, but I'm going with something like a ribbon or horn speaker. I'm hoping it's the GT Audio Works.
You all should have an idea of the tonality based on the first teaser video. I'll do about 5 teasers and let's see who can nail it. I'll be shocked if someone nails it.
Sounds like JBL to me.
Magico M6/ Gryphon Essence monos is excellent set-up. Do you really need $175k speakers to get this kind of sound ? I don't know, maybe.
This system is very engaging in a more sophisticated way than Wilson/whatever we heard. I would choose one over the other depending on what I would be listening.
Here we go...1am and I’m working here trying to get the positioning correct. I wish I had 2 of you here toeing the speakers in and out while i sit and just listen.
Pushing these things is like pushing a bus....
I think kren0006 might be right - he mentioned the Sonus Faber, and I had forgotten about the timeframe to get them.

Dave
Hmmm.... The male soloist sounds thin, and his transients are etched. Hope this is an artifact of factory-fresh speakers.

G.

You all are assuming too much and yet i bet most of you have never heard this particular song on a highly resolving system.
