Had you kept the Ref 10 I would guess the 160M but since you ditched that...HMM...Mike carries Vac so maybe the 200IQ? I wouldnt think you would stretch for the new 450 VAC or whatever that Monster is called. |
I can certainly give some feedback as to what happened last time in regards to me finding the oppo 205 and the lampizator sounding the same through the ref10. My take? Well it can be either of these 2 things: 1. The ref10 simply does not pass the signal as pristine as possible. It “sugar coats it” with whatever sound the engineering team at arc wanted out of it. 2. The tubes were at 2k hours. Maybe the tubes were just not performing right anymore and this took away the qualities from each source I connected to it.
i can certainly say that the solid state preamp I use now (Virgo 3) seems to be more appropriate for my neoltihs.
One last thing and a surprise to you all: i am going to be trying a set of tube amplifiers very soon. :)
|
WC- It will be helpful to know what elevated the 205 or hampered the Lampizator the last time you compared them as they were reported to be in the same league. |
@whitecamaross
The amps sounded good 2 days ago but I don’t know what happened because today the sound has me hypnotized to say the least. It’s a drastic difference.
Can you say "Lampizator" :) It IS at its best as a DAC and not really a Pre-Amp...Right ? |
just so soothing listening to all these recordings tonight. thanks for sending these around. will take some time to know each of these tracks wc - for fun, just a few - Ballad of the runaway horse - Rob Wasserman - Mansa - Djelimady Tounkara (extra nice 24/96 version) - Birds - Dominique Fils Aime - Nameless - Terracentric - Rodrigo y Gabriela - Love came here - Lhasa - for Trouble is what’s your’re in - my favorite version is the live from union chapel in london. (maybe what u listen to already) |
BTW, I purchased all the others...…..although, if I put my hand out, I could have gotten them on the arm, I am sure. But that wasn't me. |
Pokey...Absolutely. I cannot believe I left out the name of the band in my post. In '83, I was invited to visit DMP in Connecticut with some other industry folks, to see the facilities, and we were each given a copy. Great to this day. I have the entire DMP library on CD, but Tricycle is very special to me, as it probably is to you. Play it. I hope WC gets his hands on a lossless download. Enjoy ! MrD. |
@mrdecibel
Is that Flim & the BBs?
If so, that was my first CD! Tunnel is another great record by them.
|
WC, Tin Pan Alley was recorded and released in 1983 / 1984, as I indicated. Here is another I believe you will find fun, and will be a system tester, for sure. It was 1983, and a recording engineer named Tom Jung, started a new label ( Digital Music Products, better known as DMP ), all digital, and a direct to digital format ( no overdubbing, 1 take ) and a musical 1st of it's kind for the new format, the CD. The name is " Tricycle ". I am sure you can download it, as it is available on YouTube. Enjoy ! Always, MrD. I have a question, WC.....Were you around in 1983 ? lol .....My son was born that year. |
I’ve added every single song you all have suggested. I can’t wait to hear them all tomorrow night. Keep them coming if you have anymore please ! |
@whitecamaross
Meant to mention that Carey Bell - "It's so easy to love you" is a spectacular recording.
|
Wow, just typed a list and lost it! Arggghhh
@mrdecibel
Not a big SRV fan, but wow, that Tin Pan Alley track is very well recorded. Thanks for the rec.
@whitecamaross
I've notice that you enjoy a lot of genre's, so I hope you enjoy some of my recs.
Uncle Tupelo - Sandusky Dido - Give you up Chemical Brothers - We've got to try Carey Bell - It's so easy to love you American Football LP3 (whole album) Cibela - The shine of electric dried leaves - Phoenix, Flying High
@grey9hound
On the subject of War, check out Low Rider. Really great recording.
|
I believe I told WhitecamaroSS to try to evaluate a system by playing live un mastered songs that are well recorded. One such song I played for you in the GT Audioworks Room at Axpona was Marcus Miller From Tutto Revisted - the song was Jean Pierre track 5- I saw you shaking your head in disbelief when I was demoing the system. Another cd is Rodrigo y Gabriella Live in Japan song is Stairway to Heaven. These songs are a must when evaluating any system. Listen up then I hope you listen to them again on the GT system.
|
Tecknik- excellent tunes !
|
Blues Is A Feeling - Blues Company,From Daybreak to Heartbreak Crying - James Blood Ulmer Live Experience Three O'Clock Blues - BB.King & Eric Clapton
|
I am going to revisit every single Type of song. This new front end has me wanting to listen to everything and that’s a great feeling. The amps sounded good 2 days ago but I don’t know what happened because today the sound has me hypnotized to say the least. It’s a drastic difference.
|
A real sleeper so to speak(no pun intended) is ZZ-Top-"Asleep in the Desert" It is an Instrumental. If you have not heard it , you would not know that it is ZZ-Top |
Damn WCSS, You might want to re-visit some of the ones I sent .. ..LOL I know that they are not all demo material, but several were. I guess , in your defense, I did not send song titles or cd insert with that info .. I should have listed what was on that Ayon one. You are gonna have to Shazam that cd to find the Artist and songs,... sorry. |
The War Album I am talking about was actually the 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition "The World Is a Ghetto" done in 2012.
|
You don't say. Did not know that, lol. Enjoy ! |
If there’s a better sounding song than Tin Pan Alley or similar, please share it. That song is INSANE |
I also sent some Bela Fleck and Keb’ Mo Cds Both pretty good for demoing equipment I might have sent some Poncho Sanchez, if not I should have |
I need to dig up those cds greyhound. |
So now, WC can compare the streaming version and the cd version of SRV's TPA, and give us his thoughts on that comparison. greyhound...very familiar with each song in your line up, and I have to agree, all spectacular. Yuri Honing Trio is awesome ! |
grey9hound PM sent. Happy Listening!
|
@whitecamaross Guys I actually sent it to him months ago. It was in The Ayon Audio Sampler disc.It is absolutely one of the best IMO. It has : Domination by Peace Orchestra Tin Pan Alley- Stevie Ray Vaughan Bela Fleck-Flight of The Cosmic Hippo My Battle-- Andrea Houston Walking On The Moon --Yuri Honing Trio Bessame Mama-- Poncho Sanchez Suitcase-- Keb’ Mo Fink--See It All and many more but those right there are some Great Demo songs I find that the old group WAR had some great recordings .Especially "The World is a Ghetto" Album |
I thank you too... sorry hahah i would like to begin to write my will and make sure I am buried with these components. I don’t think the casket can accommodate these amps though. :)
|
WC, I get no credit ?, as I brought it up 1st. I should has specified the version of TPA on " Couldn’t Stand the Weather ", as this version of Tin Pan Alley, since it’s release in mid 1984, has been a standard of every audiophile, even many with a greater interest with classical music. And yes, it shows up on SRV greatest hits releases. |
Bireli Lagrene.......”More”.......is absolutely marvelous You can clearly hear the delicate guitar bends, slides and harmonics of the instrument.
|
Tin Pan Alley also appears on " Couldn’t Stand The Weather ", which was released 1 year later after Texas Flood. The Texas Flood version was recorded live. The version I am referring too is the Studio version, recorded and done in 1 take, but with much higher resolution, that made this one, heralded as the " one to play ", showing off systems and such. |
It does not show up on my 'Texas Flood' album. Maybe robertrs has a different version. |
Dasign, you hit a home run with that song... |
WC, here are my favorite test tracks. These are identified by track/artist/album and are all available on Tidal. I have diverse musical taste and sorted things out in order by mood, ambient up to techno:
Music Box/The Cinematic Orchestra/Ma Fleur Notes Falling Slow/Cowboy Junkies/
Notes Falling Slow
Shortline/Ry X/Dawn Everything Disappears/Thomas Stronen/Time is a Blind Guide So/The Range/Potential Crisis/Anohni/Hopelesness Deadman/Shackleton/Deadman NY is Killing Me/Jamie XX/We're New Here
|
WC, the track is on the album 'The Real Deal: Greatest Hits Volume 1' on Tidal. |
SRV or Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble is the artist.Texas Flood is the album |
Thanks riaa dasign, who sings that song ? |
Mrdecibel, could’nt agree more on your ´Tin Pan Alley’ track. Gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. |
Just play the entire First Side (3 songs) of Dire Straits "Making Movies" album. Probably the best produced album at that time and a perfect album side. |
ok, does anyone have particular tracks that sound similar to the ones i posted above? if you have test tracks, share them here! |
To you, wc, and all of your readers > I sure hope I am not becoming the new V man here. I am being serious. If I am, let me know, as I will cool down. |
BTW, I do love the 3 songs you use for system evaluation, but admittedly, they are highly processed ( so much of recorded music is, unfortunately ). Listen to Tin Pan Alley ( the studio version ), and get back to us about it. Enjoy ! MrD. |
I am so glad you put the Lampi in your system. You are a strange dude, wc. Just connect the best stuff together, and enjoy !. |
Ladies and gentleman: i had to post this... So i just said "screw it" i am going to connect the lampizator into the preamp and do an a/b comparison with the oppo 205 and lampizator. Anyhow. the difference is MASSIVE in terms of sound. The lampizator is killing the oppo 205 even though the oppo has the expensive nordost odin pc connected to it along with the expensive platinum 7 xlrs (the lampizator has a wireworld 7 speaker cable and silver eclipse 7 xlrs). I am just BAFFLED, IMPRESSED, STARTLED with what i am hearing. it is sublime what i am hearing. i am just unable to put this into words right now. i have much more to share with you all so stay tuned. i gotta put my thoughts down on paper, but for now, THIS IS THE BEST SOUND i have ever had in my room and yet i still have to more cables to try over the weekend! |
zprr, although you asked wc the question, I thought I would give you a recommendation of mine. One of my go to tracks is SRV’s " Tin Pan Alley ". I am not suggesting it is his best song, because frankly, he is a genius in his playing, and I love everything by him. But, TPA, is a " simple to follow ", well recorded piece, that is wonderful for evaluating " every aspect " of a system, and / or a new addition. Tone, dynamics, spatial cues, timing, note and pitch sustainability, speed, coherence, everything ! A reason it is still used today by many ( to the point, actually, some listeners are tired of it at shows, and showrooms ). It is fabulous for " tuning " components ( footers, weights, etc. ), anyone, not just the higher echelon audiophiles and music listeners, can use it as a reference. Much more enjoyable than test tones ( which these test cds are also good for that ). So many systems fail, ime, with the note and pitch sustainability area. And this, to me, is necessary for proper musical reproduction of a system ( music in general ). Enjoy ! MrD. |
awesome, thanks. love that fink song |
London Grammar - Hey Now Dire Straits - You and your friend Fink - Trouble you're in
I stream music from Tidal and i also tried Qobuz, but there is zero difference in terms of sound quality between both so i am continuing with Tidal.
|
WC - Can you share your top 3 tracks that you listen to when making your comparisons that draw on different attributes that you are looking for? You have mentioned a few in the past but it could be 60 pages ago...
I know we all have different music tastes, but it would be helpful to listen to those tracks on my own system to try to discern those same attributes as a point of reference when reading your reviews if you mention a particular track. I forget if you stream from Tidal or another music service, that would be an easy way to compare, but even if you are playing them off a CD we could download or stream the track. |
Let us keep in mind, many of us compare our systems to live, unamplified music. Once the recordings are made, with the mics, mixing consoles, compressors, equalizers ( and this is just some of the equipment ), and now we add the producers, the artists, the engineers, and all of the other people involved, you are far from live. Once we all listen at home, in our systems, we are trying to create " our nirvana ", meaning, what we think it should be. We are all " different ", in what we want and think it should be ( a point I tried to make several times to V man ). This is why I stick around here and look forward to WCs next move, and appreciate his findings. It is wc's passion, financial and physical ( lol ) ability, and pursuance, to find his listening " bling ", that keeps me coming back, day after day. Enjoy ! MrD. Guido, I sent you an email, to start our " relationship ", lol. |
i am using balanced throughout the entire system. |
