Marantz Receiver Bad HDMI

I have a 4yr old AV7702 but my HDMI comes and goes. Usually when you first turn it on maybe 15-30 min, then magically it comes on till next time I turn it on then SOS

This sucks, since I was about to buy a refurbished unit to act as my HT processor into my integrated. :(

The HDMI boards on these devices seem to often be a weak link. Onkyo had some huge recalls a few years ago. I had an issue with my Marantz AV8801, but got it fixed under warranty. I now have an AV7704 that I bought refurbished. I think I've had it about a year, no issues so far. If you think Marantz is bad, my Onkyo receiver will no longer hold its settings if it loses power. Onkyo won't supply repair manuals or parts to dealers, so you have to pay to ship your unit to the one "authorized" location on the west coast just to find out how much it will cost to repair it. I don't remember the exact amount, but I think they said the average repair was around $450. 

My friend has Marantz SR5011 av receiver and lately he said its HDMI comes and goes. He's very upset and frustrated. 

I don't know how Marantz is, I just know I had an Onkyo used as a HT pre and it was not very good sounding, very much sounded like the Emotiva at the time. Thin and lifeless digital reproduction.

I got rid of them both and stuck with a Theta Casanova as long as I could.

I expect the top of the line Marantz receiver the SR8012 will sound better than any Onkyo receivers when used as HT preamp processor as well as standalone receiver. Not sure how Marantz lower end receivers would stack up against any Onkyo receivers when used as HT preamp processor for your front speakers. 

Other receiver brands I highly recommend are the following : 
* NAD T787 if you don't need 4K pass through or Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, etc. This model was discontinued.
* Audio Control Maestro receivers. 
* Arcam AVR850 or even AVR 550. 
* Cambridge Audio CRX 200 if you don't need 4K, Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, etc.
* Rotel RAP 1580 receiver. 
* Anthem MRX 1120 receiver. 

All the above mentioned receivers would sound better than any Marantz or Onkyo receivers or any Japanese mass produced AV receivers even when used as HT preamp processors.

Thanks for the help. I'm afraid I'm trying to keep costs low, especially since this is essentially a secondary unit. I'm using a Luxman integrated for 2 channel, and need a HT 5.1 decoder, with HDMI switching to add to it.

My thoughts were to buy something from Accessories 4 Less in the $500 range. I'm trying to have something that is not terrible, for not a lot, with all the modern HDMI supporting features.

In the $500 range used I suggest you look for a used older NAD, Cambridge Audio, Rotel, Arcam, Marantz receivers (10 yrs old and older) with HDMI switching and can support and decode DTS HD-Master Audio & Dolby True HD and supports 1080p video. You can find one for around $500 or perhaps less since this is only for your HT needs and you already have Luxman integrated for your 2ch music needs. 

I had the same problem with a “slim line” Marantz receiver that I bought for use in my den about  10 years ago.  HDMI  kept going out.  I used it for a couple of years with other inputs and then the power amp section died.  Around the same time I bought Marantz first streamer/DAC, which was so buggy that it’s unusable, and instead of a refund the shipped me a replacement that was no better.  It was a software issue and Marantz discontinued it and stopped support for it.  No more Marantz for me

Do you think these HDMI issues have been fixed in the most recent models? Or should I just plan on replacing a unit every year?

I'm trying to get 4K HDMI compatible. So far I've seen some Marantz units for ~ $500 refurbished I'm very tempted by.

If this is like the Onkyo issue, there are some cheap parts on the HDMI board that overheat. A family member had this problem. After the repair, I added an outboard amp and lots of ventilation. There haven't been any issues, yet, knock on wood.

After I had my Marantz AV8801 serviced, I bought a small, quiet USB fan and set it on top of the unit.  It worked great for a number of years until I sold it.  I wish I would have kept it and sold my Onkyo instead.

I was using my B&K 7 channel amp so my unit should not have been heating up to cause bad HDMI and I'm not a heavy user a few movies here and there more music maybe 3 times a week so I don't have a lot of hours on the Marantz .

Yeah, it is amazing how much manufacturers cut down on thermal management to save a few bucks.

I can't tell you guys how many wireless routers I've had which only met their specs with a fan and extra heat sinks on them.

An added external fan might be the only solution for heat concerns and issues that would most likely be contributor for those cheap off the shelf HDMI boards failures found in cheaper AV receivers and processors.

However, I’ve had my Classe SSP 800 for years without a single issue with its HDMI board. But I sold the SSP 800 to my cousin last year cause I wanted Dolby Atmos & DTS-X setup which the Classe lacks supports of. But again the Classe SSP 800 wasn’t cheap at all and did retail for $9500 when purchased brand new when it was in production up until 2017. All components and parts that go into this unit are all high grades and not some cheap off the shelf parts found in Marantz, Onkyo/Integra, Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer, Sony AV receivers or processors.
My cousin still has the SSP 800 and he said it’s still going strong, the unit is roughly 8 to 9 years old.

I was am using a B&W power amp so my Marantz doesn't heat up so heat would not be a factor with the HDMI board and the Marantz sits on the top of the rack open air the boards are just defective .

I had the HDMI issue with my SR5009 couple years ago, one went out after almost 3 years of use. It was only powering a pair of B&W CM1 S2 bookshelf speakers. I had to manually switch between my TV and projector connectors. Now it’s in my bedroom powering a pair of B&W M1 satellite speakers connected to the TV. I upgraded to an Anthem MRX-720 in my living.

I personally will not buy another Marantz seems to be a ongoing issue unless you are buying it some place where you can get a extended warranty Marantz Customer Service sucks.

I’d assume my HDMI issue is unique to my system.

Using Comcast’s supplied cable box, their remote powers up cable box, my Pioneer Elite SC-07 receiver and Elite Kuro plasma sequentially.
After a few years the receiver would power up and the HDMI would fail its connectivity.
I upgraded from the Pioneer included HDMI cable to a Blue Jeans and the connection failures were reduced considerably but still occurring.
Over six years ago a local Pioneer plasma servicing technician was well aware of the issue and suggested leaving the receiver on. Problem solved ever since.

I suspect HDMI is an inherently weak design compounded by poor termination. More often than not it manages to last longer than manufactures warrantee periods.

HDMI sucks. Good concept, poor execution. The boards on Marantz and Denon do not like “hot swaps” at all. Full power off, and unplugged at BOTH ends. My Denon died replacing the ARC cable and my service guy told me to be sure both (all) HDMI swaps are done with no power supply on. This includes standbys. Anyway, I do this now and have not had an issue since.

Started to have issues with SR8012, purchased in Apr 2020 (around 7 months ago). A couple of weeks ago first HDMI input stopped working (it starts for a couple of seconds then loses signal and starts in 5 seconds again- endless loop). I started to use another input- it worked for a week or so and went out like the first one. One by one all HDMI inputs went out - it took two- three weeks.

I remember problems with Onkyo HDMI boards, basically, it was the same behavior. I used to have two Onkyo receivers manufactured in 2012, both had similar HDMI issues (the only discern was that Onkyo lost all HDMI inputs at once not step-by-step). In 2016 Onkyo ran a special repair program free of charge, I took advantage of it and they repaired both receivers. In 2019 the problem with HDMI boards came back to my both receivers, there was no free repair program anymore and I decided to replace Onkyo and bought Marantz receivers, didn't want to dive into the same problem again. I have been mistaken. Marantz seems to be even worse than Onkyo, they don't have any free repair program (yes, I will send my receiver to them and they should fix it under warranty but at least Onkyo offered free packaging material, free shipment, and free pick-up, and it was outside the warranty period, Onkyo really tried to resolve their problems though it didn't work very well).

I hope my experience will help someone make right choice nad never buy Marantz.

Have the same SR7009, bought in 2015 had similar problem. Cbl/Sat HDMI blacked out 3 1/2 years after I purchased it. So out of warranty. Replaced cables, pvr etc when it happened as I didn't expect the amp would be faulty. Then moved to another HDMI port and it worked. back to the Cbl port and nothing. Now second port went black, moved to another port and working. However looks like the third port is flickering, so getting a feeling it's all going to go soon. Sold as a top end receiver, but reading around, it's a common problem and Marantz are just turning their back on all of us who support them. It's a factory fault and Marantz should recall or have service companies install a new/updated HDMI board. As mentioned, can't sell it as who would buy a faulty unit.
