JBL HDI 1600 does pretty good with bass for its size.
Looking for recommendation for a 3 way book shelf speaker with very good bass.
I'm looking for recommendation for a 3 way book shelf speaker with very good bass. My receiver is a restored Marantz 2275 that I use for listening to Rock, Southern Rock and Prog 'N Roll. I'm looking at smaller speakers with good bass and that can be use on speaker stands. I don't want no subwoofer.
The is for a medium 10 x 10 listening room.
Right now I have a set of Klipsch Quartet that I'm using with the 2275. Thanks,Chuck

I was gonna recommend the JBL 4319 "monitors" but they're not available anymore (over at musicdirect.com). There are, however, some 4312G monitors going for $1750 and an open box pair for $1495. I can't say if the 4312G will satisfy your needs but a search for anyone else who might still have a pair of the 4319s would be worth the search. When buying something else from Musicdirect.com I asked about the L100s and was told by two different reps there that it would be more of a sideways move than an improvement. One even preferred the 4319s. All the best, Nonoise |

I know my suggestion is not a 3 way design, but get yourself hold of a pair of Klipsch RB-75s and most of your boxes will be checked. Great dynamics and very acceptable bass response for a pair of “bookshelf” speakers. Or if you want to spend a bit more $$$ and you can find them, a pair of Klipsch P-17Bs will check all the boxes. Your title, 'book shelf', may limit responses, I suggest you start another thread asap asking for advice about 3 way 'stand mounted' speakers btw, square rooms are very difficult, what is the ceiling height? ........................................... Seems you are not a fan of subs but want decent bass. Ports are often used to keep the speaker width smaller. I am not a fan of ports, definitely not side or bottom firing, thus the amount of bass would be limited/increased by the woofer size, which determines the speaker's width. Dual small woofers are also used to keep speaker narrow and get more bass, making the speaker taller and retaining tighter imaging. Front ports are a way of using a smaller diameter woofer, thus a narrower box, ...................................... SUB, I realize you said no, but for others Perhaps you have not heard a stereo pair of front firing subs, producing directional bass adjacent to the mains. (fundamentals and their overtones create directionality of bass) Self powered subs also take the requirement for low bass out of your amp, then your amp can deal with upper bass/mids/highs more easily. And, after the crossover to or in the sub, the stand mounted speakers do not try to make low bass, which changes which speakers you can use successfully. |
