Legacy Audio has a new owner

I don’t know who it is. But I just tried to order another sub direct from the factory. I have been buying from them this way for many years. In fact I just bought a Foundation Subwoofer and a pair of Studio HD  for surround speakers within the last couple months. A nice discount was always part if the deal. I live a few hours by car from the factory and would pick them up on my way to visit a friend in St. Louis so no freight charges. Anyway, I just tried to order another sub. Nope. All sales now must go through the dealer network at full list plus freight etc.

No surprise I guess. The dealers must have been pissed. Unfortunately this takes the price to about $1,500 more than I paid a couple months ago. I’m out on that. I will make do with one sub.

What makes you say it has a new owner?

Maybe they just changed their policy.

Quite a system by the way...

@thecarpathian

I was told that they have a new owner by their head of sales in a conversation earlier today.

I guarantee you that if you contact dealers you'll be able to find one that will sell to you at a discount (possibly 20-25%) and will ship to you. I do this on every new item I buy (except Holo Audio as there are no dealers). There are some brands that are more difficult to get discounts on, like Magico, but for the most part it can be done. I was considering Legacy at one point and found a discounting dealer but it's been a while and I don't remember who it was. Pretty sure he was in TX.

@charles007100

No not a dealbreaker for me. I just need to get over the fact that things will cost more buying through a dealer. And as pointed out above by   @shooter41   there’s sure to be dealers that will discount to some level. I just need to do the legwork.

None of this is a big surprise really. Bill Duddleson, the founder and principal owner is getting older now.  He’s been at it a long time. And frankly, I always wondered how long the dealer network would stand for being undercut on price by the factory selling direct. I’ve benefited greatly by this over the years though.

jfrost bills age has nothing to do with anything, the company has a full staff of speaker builders and service people

The only issue if bill stepped down  would be no new models

however their  current designs are all fantastic and suit any listener

Hey guys, to answer the question directly. My wife and I are the new investors into Legacy Audio.  I am happy to engage and have any conversation you would like. We live here in the Springfield area, and have been customers / dealers / friends of Bill for ~20 Years. This is a long term passion project for us, we are anchored in Product Quality and Customer Experience.

Bill is still very much involved in the business and this move was to enable him to focus on product development and innovation rather than have him run the day to day operations of the business. We haven't published anything publicly yet, well... because not a lot has changed, and there isn't a lot to announce.

@jfrost27 I think there may have been a bit of a misunderstanding with some of the communication.  You are free to come by the store and purchase direct, you don't need to go through the dealer network or pay freight if you are picking up here, but Ed was right in a "default discount" from buying direct from the factory is something that we are moving away from.  We believe that we provide the highest performance speakers for the price in the market. We believe that when we give our dealers a MSRP we have done our research to understand the value in the market of the product being offered, and always strive to exceed that value. We know we won't always get everything right, but we will always work to make it right.  I am happy to look at your scenario as I would on any.

In the mean time if you want to reach out, feel free - jay@legacyaudio.com.  And if you want to reach out to Bill, he is here too :-).

Thanks again for all of the years of support and the many years yet to come!

I would still buy a Legacy speaker after reading Jay's post.   Sounds like they want to continue Bill's " Legacy"

+1

It's not an uncommon scenario to see a founder / owner / creator / designer to hand off production operations and go back to the original vision and passion - design.

We've all seen this occur with amplifier companies too, unleashing the original wizards to transition back to how it all started for them, and giving it a 2nd wind come about to create the next generation of designs.  Focus like this can make a real difference.

While I don't own Legacy, it will be interesting and fun to see how this unfolds more and what becomes of it in good time.  yes

@skeptikal yes, we have a variety of B-stock, and remastered speakers at the factory. We are working on a website refresh to bring those out to market, but feel free to call / email in the meantime.

so it seems there will be no major changes at legacy in terms of production or business model

and perhaps with bill being freed up from daily operations we may see some new models

so no bid deal with this announcement

LEGACY DEALERS

As a supplier of piece parts to Legacy for years, I've had the pleasure of getting to know Bill, and can't think of anyone in the hi-end audio industry more adept at combining design expertise with business acumen.   The design and engineering side is clearly his passion, and I hope he continues with that.

 11 months ago I purchased a new pair of the Signature SE in the gorgeous  sappele cabernet finish. Still in full bloom love....

@jaymcardle

Congratulations on your new ownership. Here’s hoping you’re around for a long long time!

@jaymcardle

I have a complete Legacy system. Speakers, Subs, Amps, everything. Bill came to my house a couple years back to try and repair one of the Foundations that FEDEX freight beat up.  One of my favorites is my Phantoms. Did you quit making them? I notice their no longer on website.

@nitrobob
Yes, it is a discontinued model.  I loved the aesthetic & performance of them.

What I would like to see from the new owners is support for the disentergrating foam on the Original Whisper's and original Maruqis waveguide. That waveguide is important to the function of the speaker.
