Apology Accepted , let's move on.
Jazz for aficionados
Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

Back by popular demand: Jon Batiste -- HOLLYWOOD AFRICANS Good for testing audio systems also. Loud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCtpnw7tncs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMqvTBzIpH8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GCC1EEmJlo4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ-UxxftTQw Cheers |
I think every body has submitted spirituals at one time or another except me, I'm going to correct that today. I like the oldest spirituals the best, but I couldn't find any with good recording quality so I'm doing the best I can; it's for sure that in these trying times we can all use some uplifting sounds associated with a higher power. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z7d2OmR_XQ |
Mary_jo, this is the first time I've heard Julia Lee; I really enjoyed her songs, will order some. Her use of the "double entendre" is most interesting.I am glad you like her singing 0-10. With the cheerful voice and phrases that are often subject to various interpretations, she surely brings smile on the face of the appreciative listener. Interesting to know is that she was known as "dirty blues" musician. :o |
I've been listening to Urszula Dudziak all afternoon, and I can't quite find the words to describe her, but wild, exciting and seductive are a few words that come to mind. If only my body could keep up with my mind? Maybe if I was 30 years younger? But when your mind is like mine, who needs a body, I just went back 45 years to when I bought this album, now I can hang with Urszula. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zUBL2sg9MA |
Lay in a course for Class M Planet.:--) Let's hope that M-Class planet is free of defective carbon-based units. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YcLlURCLIU Cheers |
That's wonderful song. Appropriate for carbon based units. Love is the answer. Not the obsessive and possessive kind of love we usually see between two but the real one, the most challenging. When you have reason not to or when you have nothing of it, but you still care. That kind of love. That's high. *appropriate jazz song which I cannot think of now* |
I listen to the marvellous cd of Irene Kral : " where is love ? " It is a pure gem.... Very few can sing with this natural and simple musicality in each words.... If you can hear and "see" the rainbow passing with each inflexion of his voice when she sing some syllable, your audio system is good... If not.... Its too bad.... :) |
This might be the first time Sammy Davis Jr. has ever been mentioned on this thread. That's because he's an entertainer as opposed to being specifically a jazz singer. Just like everyone else, I saw Sammy on TV many times, and I liked him but was not overwhelmed. It was not until I saw Sammy in the flesh was I impressed beyond belief. A friend of mine called and told me he had two tickets to see Sammy at the Kiel Auditorium, and if I supplied the transportation, he would supply the rest. The first thing that impressed me when we arrived at the auditorium was the fact that it was packed to capacity. (I didn't know that Sammy had that kind of drawing power) After the show opened, I discovered why he had that kind of drawing power; how could one person (with orchestra) keep an auditorium full of people mesmerized from the beginning till the end of his show; he must have been the worlds greatest entertainer ever, the man sang, danced, told jokes, and made hours pass like minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8uFA6Gh_wsw |
Today's Listen: Elvin Jones / Jimmy Garrison Sextet -- ILLUMINATION with / Prince Lasha(clarinet & Flute), Sonny Simmons(alto sax & english horn), Charles Davis(baritone sax), McCoy Tyner(piano) A drummer and Bassist leading a Jazz group? 'nuttin' out jones' by Prince Lasha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVEVoKsd6Go 'oriental flower' by McCoy Tyner https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTky5aRNcMY 'aborigine dance in scotland' by sonny simmons https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRHmx3YmutI Some of Trane's old crew, but no Trane. :( The more I listened to it, the more I liked it. The 'oriental' and 'scottish' tunes were a cute touch. The notes called it "afro-Scottish", cringing here. Cheers |
Even as a very young kid, I liked them very much... Golden Gate Quartet, live from Berlin, rare film https://youtu.be/WLCq-vm7wkw ...apperently, there is a tape where Elvis sings with them...that would be great to hear... |

Pryso. saw few posts deleted where Schubert and Rok traded jabs. Posted 'social distance in a bar fight after'... As Rok said, perhaps the writers got sober..but, than again, we know that Schubert is not drinking, so unless there is some twist there, my guess is that moderators did it, but the criteria is still unclear sometimes... https://youtu.be/VjFyX2sSTGs https://youtu.be/7s8glZ-efMg |
rok, one of my deleted posts was simply a link to a classic blues performance with double entendre lyrics. That was quite popular at one time. The other was simply a correction to a reference that mentioned a trombonist being male when in fact it was a female. In my mind both posts were simply straight forward information, not political or otherwise suggestive. They were historical and factual. What can I say? |

Today's Listen: Elvin Jones -- DEAR JOHN C. with / Charlie Mariano(alto sax), Hank Jones(piano), Sir Roland Hanna(piano), Richard Davis(bass) Of course, John C. is John Coltrane. Good players, but I expected a little more in a Coltrane tribute. At least a hard blowing Tenor Saxophone. Impulse Label. 1965. JOHN C. -- Bob Hammer / Bob Thiele https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ihgs923DfC4 LOVE BIRD -- Charles Mingus https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdOv0lfXXoI ANTHROPOLOGY -- Dizzy Gillespie / Charlie Parker https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7TBIPvxM8k FANTAZM -- Duke Ellington https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgtpF-IIDZQ This CD contains 'ILLUMINATION' and 'DEAR JOHN C.' That’s right. Besides the moderators, only the poster can delete his/her post up to a half hour or so after posting. After that, only the moderators can. As Rok says, they do get “help” by way of a “complaint” by someone who doesn’t like the post; or is simply being a jerk. My opinion, but I suspect that this thread has gotten and will continue to get “special attention” given the recent “incident”. |
I can’t imagine anyone is monitoring all the posts on all Forum sites!I ask myself the same. Informers ok, but who really wants to bother with that? That’s right. Besides the moderators, only the poster can delete his/her post up to a half hour or so after posting. After that, only the moderators can.I think that you can edit the post within 30 min but afterwards you can delete it whenever you like it. Wait, I'll try... |

Never posted in here before but what the heck... It is quite possible my idea of "jazz" is not yours... Lol. Just to give be you an idea of what I listen to that I term jazz or jazz/fusion. Stanley Clarke, Al Jarreau, David Benoit, Lee Ritenour, The Rippingtons, Yellowjacket, Dave Grusin, Stanley Jordan, Spyro Gyra etc. Are they artists that members who post here feel fall under this Jazz aficionados heading? |
