Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Imagine Etta James or Millie Jackson, doing "Guess who I saw Today". They would have shot the boy in the first verse! Song over.
Now I understand better the difference between New York- ish and Mississippi-ish.

The voice is absolutely great but the emotion...where is the feeling? She sings like she saw apples and oranges double pack instead preferred single pack in the store...

This morning I was watching a TV show. There she was, a beautiful singer, all dressed up. I know her, I like her good looking and her voice, she is very good. But when she started singing, it was the new song, I was disappointed. It was not who she was, the song, the lyrics simply does not suite her personality. She looks like she could eat the man for breakfast, I just can’t believe her words when she moans about the lost opportunity in love and things like that.

If you can't show that you can bleed, like the rest of us, ordinary human beings, I am not interested...
Nancy Wilson, no emotion?! I am crushed. So much for this fantasy 😢. Just remember, in Mississippi they put ketchup on just about everything 😝. Man does not live by BBQ and corn bread alone. Nothing like a nice candlelight dinner sometimes.

No emotion:

Fro, that’s completely another song...I was NOT saying about Nancy Wilson in every song but ONLY in that particular one when she saw her love with another woman.

Just remember, in Mississippi they put ketchup on just about everything 😝.
They do? Uhhh...that’s bad...:--)))
Thank God!
Sometimes it’s the quiet types that a man needs to be careful with and sometimes it’s the quiet types that are bes.......I should stop.  Fantasy on.  😊
I like when they are more "wild", not too much but just about enough, but that's just my own preference.
Thank God!

:--) I know what you mean. If I may say something. :--) Those are exceptions. Exceptions are possible. Mostly, if she is too quiet, she is too quiet. She might go to flame once a while because of restraining herself to long but in general, she is quiet type. You’ll know when you meet the other type, what opposite of quiet looks like.
Love Janis. Like Nina....usually. Janis, as raw as can be; but I don’t hear so much anger......love it, always have.

My wife likes Southern Rock (I do too) and has been listening to this singer. I kinda like her (like my wife, too 😍):

BTW, Phil Woods “Sail Away”.....as NY as it gets. So much for silly labels.

**** exceptions ****

Not really my experience.

**** You’ll know when you meet the other type, what opposite of quiet looks like.****

I don’t think we need to look far 😊

Now I understand better the difference between New York- ish and Mississippi-ish.

The Queen get's it, as do all true Jazz Aficionados.

showing feelings is considered bad form in some circles, like her targeted audience for instance..

Mary Jo,   if you will notice, she did raise her voice a little on 'Save your love for me', that's considered raw emotion among the Jazz elites of NYC.

Cheers

You forgot the catfish.

This album, arranged by  Mark Alton Masters who also plays the trumpet was just released 2 weeks ago. Its a nonet. The entire session is already on You Tube and I listened to every song the other night and just ordered it for my collection. Really good.

Wiki:

Mark Alton Masters (born November 13, 1957) is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and arranger. According to biographer Michael G. Nastos, Masters "has emerged as one of the great jazz arrangers of the 20th and 21st century.

Masters studied at Riverside City College and California State University, Los Angeles. He made his first recordings as a leader in 1984.

Masters is president of the board of directors of the American Jazz Institute, "a non-profit organization dedicated to the enrichment and enhancement of the appreciation of jazz music" in Pasadena, California.

Here is the album called "Night Talk"

And to think I had never heard his name before....

Talking about Jazz vocalist's my favorite was, and still is Sarah Vaughn.

Here is one from my collection that is hard to find now at a reasonable price (unless its been re - issued). Its live and one of my favorite recordings:

Lol...

I know it’s bad that I even say a word against the lady who is indeed great singer but you understood me well.
Nancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderly' version of "Save Your Love For Me" is my favorite. It is funny, at least to me, how any given song is "OWNED" by a particular singer, to one's self personally.

Well said...

fro, where I come from, we use candlelight only if somebody is dead or if power supply is down...:--)
Good morning everybody. It's morning here so it has to be everywhere.

Speaking of being Mississippi-ish, here is old one for you...

Spelling Mississippi

A bus stops and two Italian men get on. They sit down and engage in an animated conversation.

The lady sitting behind them ignores them at first, but her attention is galvanized when she hears one of he men say the following:

"Emma come first. Den I come. Den two asses come together. I come once-a-more. Two asses, they come together again. I come again and pee twice. Then I come one lasta time."

"You foul mouthed swine," retorted the lady indignantly. "In this country we don't talk about our sex lives in public!"

"Hey, coola down lady," said the man. "Who talkin' abouta sexa? I'm
just tellin' my frienda how to spella 'Mississippi'."

Pretty funny.

Hey, why not? Staying on that politically incorrect bus and speaking of candle light dinners:

Q: What’s the most popular pick up line in Mississippi?

A: Hey, nice tooth
**** where I come from, we use candlelight only if somebody is dead or if power supply is down...:--) ****

What?! That is horrible. No candle light?! No sweet nothings in one’s ear?! No footsies?! NO NANCY WILSON?!!!

You continue to crush my fantasy. Now that it doesn’t matter at all I can safely let you know one thing: I have all my teeth.

Somehow, I feel better; like a weight has been lifted. Thank you. Hey, speaking of down power supplies:

Q: Did you hear about the power outage at the Mississippi State University library?

A: Thirty students were stuck on the escalator for three hours.

😊
Speaking of candle light dinners and footsies; and to beat Rok to the punch 😊:

“My love life in NYC is terrible. The last time I was inside a woman was when I visited the Statue of Liberty.” —Woody Allen

What?! That is horrible. No candle light?! No sweet nothings in one’s ear?! No footsies?! NO NANCY WILSON?!!!
Nooo....and after (you know what), we cover ourselves with blanket from tip to toe and kindly ask: Is it over?

If that is not romantic I really can’t say what it is.

No, when we made things clear, you’re surely agree that it is better sooner than later, we can continue with jazz:

(I am gonna need one after moderators get me)
mary_jo, that spelling joke is an old one.  It was funny (humorous) to me that it has traveled around the world in all these years.

Also, you know this but I'm not the same person as pjw. ;^)

But too bad if some gentleman never treated you to a romantic, candle-lit dinner.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4TtJ0ZP0MY
But too bad if some gentleman never treated you to a romantic, candle-lit dinner.
pryso, we are just joking.

Oh, I had dinner(s) but the history has shown that the most non-romantic person and no candle-lit type has eventually shown himself to be the kindest one. So what’s the use of candle-lit dinners on a long run? :--)

I think you people have missed your calling.  All that's missing is the drum rolls.

The so-called joke about the escalator at MSU is not funny.   Supposed one of the students trapped had experienced a medical emergency?

Some things should be off limits to 'comics'.

Cheers

Ok, I agree but no need to point that out.
Today's Listen:

Sarah Vaughan  --  SASSY SWINGS AGAIN

After all these so-called jokes, we need Sassy to clear the air.

I am sure you are implying something but can't figure out what...

LOL
The Queen's sense of humor is just toooooo sophisticated for this country boy.

Cheers
Just to laugh on your joke would be too simple...

By the way, I like the music.
**** Two Jazz Divas, and Nancy Wilson walk in a bar.****

That’s pretty good. In Jazz, that’s called “influence”. Can’t escape it 😊. About two weeks or so ago I posted:

”Two musicians and a drummer walk into a bar”

Great Sarah. One of my favorites of hers. Those Mercury’s are awesome. Her voice changed quite a bit as she got older, getting huskier and her diction less precise over the years. Amazing singer.

Going back 12 years. Leaner voice, more precise diction.  Not a bad thing.  Another favorite of mine. Ernie Wilkins arrangements. Cannonball killing on alto. Not too often we get to hear Cannon leading a section:

Just to set the record straight, I love Nancy Wilson, and the way and type of songs she sings.   Just messing around with all the joke stuff.

I was debating whether to order Sarah in the land of Hi-Fi this morning.  I thought I had her with Clifford Brown, but apparently I don't.  That's another one I want.

Beautiful clips.

Cheers

The diva joke?   I was just 'quoting'.   Time honored practice in Jazz.

Sarah --

I've mentioned before that when I got into jazz in HS I joined the Columbia Record Club, so most of my selections were jazz.  That's how I got initial copies of Kind of Blue, Time Out, and What Is There To Say.  But I had to include at least one vocal and this is the album I picked --

So you could say she and I go way back. ;^)
Fabulous! Thanks for that. Beautiful woodwind playing in the accompanying orchestra. Lovers of the bass clarinet, check out its role in the chart.

Speaking of owning a song. Doesn’t happen right away. She owned this one. I have a favorite. Thoughts?

I liked the latest two best, but would agree with rok and pick 1963 as the one I enjoyed most.
