Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Paul, dont worry, there is no need to be oversensitive when we mention some recent history (of these parts)
Ethnic cleansing that you mentioned happened mostly in Bosnia and on smaller scale in some parts of Croatia, but never really anyhere on Adriatic coast where I live.
Than again, I dont think that anybody in particular is interested for that story either, so no need to go in depth of explanations who hated who and why (that goes to Mary Jo)

My point was simple, you just cant 'praise' the war. (maybe some revolution from time to time, at max) unless you are either sociopath or you have some financial benefit from it, which is cynical point of view and
again should not be stated openly, if you consider yourself a gentleman.

Now, personally I can tell you that my town saw very little fighting, at the begining of conflict, but some other parts of country were
struck badly.Lots of people went to war, in one way or another (it was not a classic 'all in' conflict) some made it back unscaved, but also some of the guys from my elementary school and some oher that I knew, never returned home. Also, because war is quite turbulent time in many ways, streets were floaded with heroin and many more died of that as well.
I guess that techno music kind of changed that trend, so there is something positive about that 'sound', after all.

I guess I could tell you many stories about those times and aldo they may be dark, I bet you would laugh to hear some of them.

As for Frogmans story, not only the people who got bombed suffer.
Here, some 3000 war weterans commited suicide since the end of war.
That is massive number and the damage that war creates to society in general cant be even calculated, like perhaps the damage in economy.

So,aldo its hard for individual to fight against the system, or even to ask from somebody to feel sorry about some people somewhere in the middle east for examp, but at least dont tell me that is good to bring home your own dead and wounded, just for sake of somebody elses profit, because, obviously, those trillion of dollars spend on arms would better serve people who need jobs, education, healthcare or plain infrastracture...

"Than again, I dont think that anybody in particular is interested for that story either, so no need to go in depth of explanations who hated who and why (that goes to Mary Jo)".

I haven’t noticed that I went into depths. It would take at least several pages for just to scratch the surface. The matter was shortly mentioned so I answered the same. I can’t determine if one is interested in finding out the truth or not. But can’t ignore the false statements and have to bring out the facts. Period.

Jafant,I don't even watch myself for the United States Government, so why should I watch myself for Southerners? Although Mississippi is the poorest state in the union, and it's a known fact that poor people are quick to get needlessly violent, maybe I should heed your warning.

BTW, I told "Deep State" that everyday was a good day to die. They tried to accommodate me by causing my death by "natural causes"; no one would know, except the assassin doctor that injected the infection or whatever that caused my death.

Been there, done that, and I’m still alive. It’s only as a result of "Serendipity" that I’m alive.
Just a sampling:

**** let me tell you what conservatives hate more than anything****

****due to your unconcern for the problems****

****I know what you mean about "conservatives " and well off blacks****

****unless you are either sociopath or****

****You’re clearly part of the problem, and you’ll never see it.****

****I did not even click on your link A hole****

****I find that some of your posts are quite ’sick’,****

Did someone here point out that “it always turns ugly”?

All those baseless generalizations and all that vitriol as if, from simply Internet forum posts (!), anyone here could possibly understand the full measure of any other individual and what is truly in his/her heart. Things that are the result of their personal life experiences and which they may, or may not, choose to share on an Internet forum. Not to mention, as if any one of us has the writing skills to fully and accurately express them.

I see now that, sensitive and enlightened individuals that we all are, we have changed minds and viewpoints and made progress toward a better world.

Did someone here say “self serving”?

O-10, I wish you well.

The Frogman is, as usual, the voice of reason.   He is our guru in many ways.   The way to stop this, is to just stop.   I stop now.

Back to Jazz.

Cheers
Rok, I agree, as I said, you seem to be a funny guy, looking from distance.

Next quatation is not a try to continue 'discussion' with you, it is for Frogman.
It seems to me that you have forgot to quote the lines that started all (at least in my case)

'I have nothing against war.  Some of humanity's finest hours happened during war.  And sometimes war is the only solution to the problem.  And don't forget the major advances in social situations, science and medicine that happen during war.

Also, the climate / environment is in crisis.  The greatest cause from humans, is over population.  There are too many people on this planet.  War helps with that also.'

Now, on some blunt level, some of that might even be true, but I would not call it as something that should be accebtable to ones that consider themself to be human. Some lines should never be crossed
Alex, I will respond out of respect for you and the fact that you seem to be asking for a response from me. Only this one time; and last time on the topic. If I am mistaken about your wish for a response I would refer you to the last paragraph here and what I wrote in my previous post.

**** , for obvious reasons often I do not take you very serious, in fact, as younger population would say, I find that some of your posts are quite ’sick’, in a funny way.****

Is that better? I don’t think so. In fact, some might say it is even more provocative. Re “lines that should not be crossed”:

**** but I would not call it as something that should be accebtable to ones that consider themself to be human ****

In the context of the reservations that I expressed re trying to communicate one’s feelings about some of these complicated issues on a forum like this, for me, this comment crosses that line.

Regards.

@rok2id   "I don't understand why I am part of the problem.  Please elaborate."

The problem I presented to O-10 is different from the problem you see.  I said:

<<Too few do ("get it"), as denial of the history and lasting impact of American Apartheid runs very, very deep. It’s there for those who want to research it, but most don’t. >>
If you have researched and do understand that history and its lasting impact, just say so.  Reading your posts, you don't seem to, so you appear to be part of the problem I cited.

I see he is now 2 star forward commander Japan .Impressive for an ROTC product !
The spanking the great Giap gave Willy showed the DNA was there in spades . Cheers

I am not in "Just a sampling"...juhuu...

"The Frogman is, as usual, the voice of reason. He is our guru in many ways. The way to stop this, is to just stop. I stop now.

Well said. Agree.

"I see now that, sensitive and enlightened individuals that we all are, we have changed minds and viewpoints and made progress toward a better world."

Well noticed.

O-10, I wish you well too.
Etta James -- ST Louis Blues

Wow!!   Never heard that before.   Gotta get it.

Cheers

Frogman, thanks for the answer, its good to know. I guess I learned something about your way of thinking as well. Certainly I would agree that is better to stop now (before would be even better,ha,ha)

Does anyone know what a one on one correlation is? I'll give you an example; when the sun comes up, we have daylight. When the sun goes down, we have darkness. If the sun never set, we would have perpetual daylight. If the sun never came up we would have perpetual darkness.

More one on one correlations, the higher the price of food and gas, the less money citizens have for other things; food and gas must be purchased even before the rent is paid, those two items are essential necessities.

When the prices of those two item went sky high, many people could only buy food and gas; that meant they had no money to spend at the shopping mall, that meant stores in the mall went out of business; charts will provide a one on one correlation to this fact.

When the price of food and gas was "artificially manipulated"; I pointed this out, that's when "Deep State" decided yours truly was a problem.

BTW,  when that hand pops up on the chart, if you click it, that will expand the chart to give you a better view.

Thanks a lot, mary jo , I’m 99.9999 % sure I got the most beautiful one !

Etta James -- St Louis Blues:

My exuberance ran right into reality on Amazon.  $95 U.S.

Cheers
Thanks mary jo for my song and all the other songs as well.

frogman I know you mean well and I agree with all you have to say.

However when one member on this forum makes disrespectful and degrading remarks that are obviously aimed at another member, which clearly show the pattern of a narcissist, and is not done just here and there but constantly on a daily basis to every other member on this forum I can only take so much.

I hope these condescending posts by this member stop now for good.

No doubt this has been on here already . But to be this mellow and still maintain tension is worth hearing any day !

Love Eddie Harris!  Groove meister and unique tone.  Never a lot of unnecessary notes.  The album version and a fave:

Probably Eddie’s best known tune:

Thanks for the info.   Just looked thru all my Etta James CDs, they are all loaded with great stuff.   But no St Louis Blues.   I'll think about the ebay thing.

Another good one.  Dr. John on piano.

I did fine the Etta performance on Amazon, it took some looking.

Pathology: that's the study of disease; the science of the causes and effects of diseases.

In addition to prosecuting and punishing murders, they should be studied, the same as a disease. When there were only a few, the present system of dealing with them was fine, but now we have an epidemic of murders. A totally separate agency, in addition, to law enforcement should be set up to discover "WHY".

In a DEMOCRACY, every single citizen has a responsibility to oversee this form of government. The citizens in this country have shirked that responsibility.

As insane and out of control as things have gotten, many think it's too late, while others think, "It ain't my job"; but it is your job.

Presently, there is an epidemic of murder. There is also an epidemic of drug use, could they be linked? While I know those two items are connected in one way; that's the fight for who is going to sell drugs in a given area, that in no way explains all the other murders.

Politicians and corporations have colluded to make the wealth of this country theirs, they have even colluded to take money from us individually by manipulating the price of food, gasoline, and everything else. I gave concrete evidence of this in my last post. What are you going to allow them to take next before you get concerned?

Hi all, I've been away from this site for some time.  That was a combination of health issues, preparation for a major move, and recently the move itself.  But today I noted frogman's name among the Recent Activity below the Topics list so decided to check in.

Unfortunately what I found was extensive off-topic discussion and name calling that I objected to previously.  No I'm not the "posting police", but I can do without that.  International politics and social injustice are critical issues, but there is a place for that discussion, and I don't see it being this jazz site.  So I may check in from time to time but as long I find much discussion other than jazz then I'll choose not to linger.

Now just to make a music comment myself, I'll say I was pleased to see discussion on Etta James.  Her tribute album to Billie Holiday is one of my favorites.  Cheers!
Haven’t heard of Badi Assad before, fro. Very interesting lady with a guitar. Will do some research to hear more of her music. I might try to steal some moves from her. ;--) Thank you for that.

mary jo that Art Pepper song is a great one. I have the studio version on his "Winter Moon" album which is an entire album of Art accompanied by strings.

The song "Prisoner" was taylor made for Art. Beautiful yet haunting, peaceful yet restless, Art just knew how to pour out everything he was feeling inside out of that alto.
