I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
0-10 most likely the guy had what is called the 1, 000 yard stare . Comes from seeing mucho death . If he was in the central highlands the drug available was hash which gives a horrible zombified look . These guys were far more dangerous to Platoon Leaders and Sgts . than the enemy and there were a lot of them .As usual , chain of command did nothing .
pjwJust saw your post about your father's wartime experience and aftermath it was quite moving. They say" war is hell", I believe only those who have been there know the full meaning of that phrase. I was glad to hear that he made a recovery although I'm sure it was not easy. Thankfully he steered you away from any military endeavors. I do not always agree with the wars we get involved in but I always respect and honor those who serve.
I knew guys that cracked at Ft Bragg, NC, during basic training.
Don’t go Hollywood with this stuff. We had a guy from Chester, PA, that went nuts at Redstone Arsenal, AL, while attending Missile school. They were all taken away never to be seen again.
Of course some of it was just a way not to go to Nam. Same in every war.
Sort of like the B17 crews that landed in Switzerland while on bombing missions over Germany. Due to engine trouble of course. Side benefit was they were interned and sat out the war in safety.
Got to be embarrassing to 8th Air Force after a while.
It’s a relief to run into Americans who “get it.” You too Schubert – thanks. Too few do, as denial of the history and lasting impact of
American Apartheid runs very, very deep.
It’s there for those who want to research it, but most don’t.
Re: your accurate description of how the South turned
Republican on a dime in the 60’s, I assembled this analysis of the
Congressional voting on the 1965 Civil Rights Acts awhile back:
Combined House & Senate vote count on final
version:
Southern
Democrats: 9–103
Southern
Republicans: 0–12
Northern
Democrats: 190–9
Northern
Republicans: 164–29
Summary:
Southern votes = 9 for, 115 against.
Northern
votes = 353 for, 38 against.
It’s an American illness, and there’s no cure in
sight.
Keegiam, your point is very well stated; the Republican Party played Southerners like a banjo, all they had to do was throw something into a bill about Black people and they got the poor Southerners vote, even when it was against their own interest.
Their racist stupidity affected all working class people adversely; the Democratic Party even shifted to the right in order to get their vote, plus the unions were weakened. Strong unions and a strong Democratic Party would have fought tooth and nail before allowing all those manufacturing jobs to leave this country. Those jobs meant people without a college education could earn a decent living.
I missed the bus that the VA provided to get from JB (VA facility in deep south county where rich people live) to the VA in the city. This meant I had to catch public transportation back to North County where I live, that’s a long way with many bus transfers to get home, did not have a clue how to do this.
After walking and finally reaching a bus stop, and catching a bus, I sat next to a young white gentleman and told him my dilemma. He was very helpful and told me that he would guide me as far as he was going. We had a long ride, and a long pleasant conversation. The reason I mention race, is because his story was the same as any young working class Black man who couldn’t afford to go to college.
In deep South County, they can’t get anybody to work fast food places because no rich parent would allow his kid to work at one even if the kid wanted to. This young man told how much travel time it took to get from where he lived in the city, to his job, and that at times he felt like all he did was ride the bus and work, but that he lived in a nice apartment (which took most of his check, no money to party) and he felt that it was worth it.
He also gave me detailed instructions on how to transfer to various buses that would get me home. His informative conversation in regard to the life of a young working class person made the long ride to my next transfer stop quite pleasant; but deep down, I felt pain because I knew a young intelligent man like him should have been in college, not working in a fast food joint on a nowhere job.
In the 80's "The American Dream" was alive and well; I know, because I sold The American Dream; 3 bedroom, 2 bath, 2 car garage, a playroom, in addition to the living room of course; all in a nice subdivision where the kids could play and ride their bikes in safety.
Rok, if you ever have any opinions against war, you had better keep them to yourself if you're at the VA. Doctors can make bad things happen to you, they follow orders; I don't know who gives the orders, ask the eye in the sky.
I have nothing against war. Some of humanity's finest hours happened during war. And sometimes war is the only solution to the problem. And don't forget the major advances in social situations, science and medicine that happen during war.
Also, the climate / environment is in crisis. The greatest cause from humans, is over population. There are too many people on this planet. War helps with that also.
Cheers
Btw, I never go to VA Doctors / hospitals. There is a special medical license that limits a doctor's practice to, Indian Reservations, Federal prisons and the US Military. 'Nuff said
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhvWZ62oVXg mary_joGreat statement " you are not talking about the one who escalated the war in Vietnam are you" in response to the describing Lyndon Johnson as the person who did the most for blacks. I noticed no response to that!! O10 - I agree with most of your sociological statements. The politicians in control of this country pit individuals against each other with labels like liberal and conservative and the general population falls for it. meanwhile the rich and large corporations control this country Lock Stock & Barrel. The rich get richer and the poor and the middle class get drunk. your example of your example of President Kennedy helping blacks that you personally knew was a good one. He was probably the first president to push for civil rights and had he lived he probably would have been the one to sign the Civil Rights bill. Why can't others accept that?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFH7YQ-2U2w frogman glad to hear that Benny Golson is still alive. I've been listening to this LP including him and all the compositions were written by him.
***** you are not talking about the one who escalated the war in Vietnam are you" in response to the describing Lyndon Johnson as the person who did the most for blacks. I noticed no response to that!!*****
What’s one thing to do with the other? Although Vietnam was the first war in which all groups in this country fought fully integrated, which went a long way towards cementing civil rights in this country.
***** had he lived he probably would have been the one to sign the Civil Rights bill. Why can’t others accept that?*****
Are you saying people should "accept" something that never happened? Sounds like coulda, shoulda, woulda to me. LBJ actually DID IT. Why can’t you accept that?
Your statements show how illogical and conflicted a lot of people are when it comes to history. There is real history, and then, there is that, that they wish was history. They can’t separate the facts from what they wished had happened.
In ANY society, the ignorant and uninformed, will always be played.
Rok, for obvious reasons often I do not take you very serious, in fact, as younger population would say, I find that some of your posts are quite 'sick', in a funny way. Than,I've read the last one, about 'war' and it left me perplexed, to say at least. I do not believe that calling that statement childlish or cynical would change your 'opinion' and certainly this is not the place for such exchange of words. I can only guess that you probably have not seen much of war from first hand, otherwise you might have very diferent opinion.
Again, do not want to sound too pathetic, but people who live in these parts of the world had an 'opportunity' to witness it, some more, some less, and I can assure you, it does not look like in the movies at all....
warning, next link is qiute disturbing....one of many, ugly, faces of war....
Alex, The Bible says there will always be wars and rumors of wars. The Bible also says Cain killed his brother Able when there were only a handful of people in the world. Now that may not be literally true, but the Bible is a great source of information on human nature and conduct. The story shows that man will ALWAYS find a reason to fight and kill each other. Always.
We can also let the record reflect that, Rok2id, has never started a war.
War not like the movies? Dang!! I thought you grabbed your shoulder, shouted "they got me", and then, all your comrades would gather around while you, with your last breath, dictated an hour long letter to Mom and your girl friend. You mean to say it's not like that??? is ANYTHING true in the world??
Cheers
Btw, people in your part of the world have been fighting and hating forever. Til this day.
" I agree with most of your sociological statements. nsp, you understood exactly where I'm coming from. Barack Obama bailed out Wall street, gave billions to corporations, and Southerners called him a Socialist; that lets us know everything we want to know about Southerners.
The corporations are firmly in control of both parties, and the class struggle we are now engaged in will have to be waged without Southerners; just scratch them off.
The problems we have are so monumental, that I don't know how to proceed in order to make progress, but some things are for certain, we must face these problems and we must identify these problems; only then can we began to solve them.
"Btw, people in your part of the world have been fighting and hating forever. Til this day."
Rok, I could tell you who was working hard to break the former SFRY, what eventually has lead to war on this area in the year 1991. But will not. Take a guess.
*****
Rok, I could tell you who was working hard to break the former SFRY*****
The death of Tito started them on the road to ruin. The collapse of the soviet union, and withdrawal of the Red Army from Eastern Europe, meant they were doomed.
Alex, war is indeed sometimes the only solution (unfortunately) and is definitely in human nature (again unfortunately). Remember what had to happen to gain liberté, égalité, fraternité. Remember also what happen afterwards. The big R eats it’s kids. Humans (what a nice word to call a man) are doomed.
Rok, nope, none of that. The death of T only made it faster to happen. But that was not the cause. The destiny of SSSR had nothing to do with it either since SSSR and SFRY were two completely different countries in many, many ways.To put it more clear, similarities between them were minor.
"The tensions were always there." So were in Africa because Africa is rich in natural resources. We were rich in something else. I think you get my point.
In 1994 I toured Japan with a major American symphony orchestra. One month performing in every major city in the country and the first of eight visits so far to that very interesting nation. The last stop was Hiroshima and the first time any of the musicians had visited the city. Shallow minded that we all were at the time we braced ourselves for what we thought would be the inevitable prejudice and antagonism due to the obvious reason. The reception that we received collectively and individually was incredible. The level of appreciation for the performances and general warmth and generosity on a personal level are something I will never forget. Quite a lesson.
alex, Anyone who has to dig a trench on the front and sit in it knows. Anyone who make comments like rok has obviously never been in a fox hole.
I have read quite a few books on the ethnic cleansing in the Balkans in the 90's. If you were there and experienced it, whether Muslim or Christian, all I can say is god bless you.
I know you do not listen to rock anymore but this ones for you:
Generals gathered in their masses Just like witches at black masses Evil minds that plot destruction Sorcerers of death's construction In the fields the bodies burning As the war machine keeps turning Death and hatred to mankind Poisoning their brainwashed minds Oh Lord yeah
Politicians hide themselves away They only started the war Why should they go out to fight They leave that all to the poor, yeah
Time will tell on their power minds Making war just for fun Treating people just like pawns in chess Wait 'till their judgment day comes, yeah
Now in darkness world stops turning As the war machine keeps burning? No more war pigs have the power Hand of God has struck the hour Day of judgment God is calling On their knees, the war pigs crawling Begging mercy for their sins Satan laughing spreads his wings Oh Lord yeah
*****

Well, you are going to have go back a lot farther than to 90's to have any understanding of the Balkans. We, Americans, always seem to think that the history of any area or country starts the day we show up.
Just the wording or tone of your posts sounded foreign, to my ears.
Just wondered. Anyway: *****
You're clearly part of the problem, and you'll never see it.*****
Since I have never committed a crime, or sold drugs, or taken drugs, or mugged anyone, or robbed anyone, or gotten any girl pregnant outside of marriage, or been a member of a gang, or killed anyone,
But I have helped people all my life as an officer in the military. Several years ago during desert Storm, I received a phone call at some ungodly hour. It was from a former soldier of mine. He was calling from Iraq. Wanted to thank me for all I had done to help him.
He was a former lookout for a drug gang in Miami. Judge said jail or Military, he chose Army. I saw the promise in him, he is now an officer in the US Army. I have always helped and encouraged those that I felt no one else would encourage. IF, they were ready. I got a lot of calls from Iraq and Afghanistan.
So, I don't understand why I am part of the problem. Please elaborate.
I was referring to alex because I am sure he was talking about the recent history of the Balkans.
If you dare to talk about the Balkan's region in any other context (and I did not even click on your link A hole), I would be more then happy to debate your idiotic viewpoints but I do not think a jazz forum is the place to argue with a narcissistic prick such as yourself.
This was indeed bloody division but it does not represent all Muslims so this is not good place to start.
You do not seem like a guy that would easily get under the influence of propaganda, so I am counting on that when telling you that during the past, all nations on this part of Balkan were striving to unite. Constantly. Especially we all got along very well after the WWII. Croats, Serbs, Muslims, Slovenes, Albanians, Macedonians, Montenegrins. All. In fact, we even were quite tolerant to the people who were persecuted in many parts of the Europe - Romani (tzigane, gypsies). And we were progressive country in so many ways.
Today, we are something else. I do not recognize my people any more. And this is why admire this what fro have written, ’cause it shows what some people still have. The qualities that make us human. Humanity.
