Jay's Audio Lab Visits GR Research's Listening Room

I have been saying this a while....If you can DIY a kit, have a tall ceiling and only have 5000 dollars, you could end up with some top tier sound with the GR NX-treme model.

Listening Session At GR Research

I believe another youtuber/BACCH dealer, Audiophile Junkie, uses the NX-treme as his daily driver still. I am fairly certain he can afford some very expensive speakers, but, he just seems to be hanging on to the GR tall tower..

You never know, i suppose....Some of you may not end up liking the sound of some expensive item, you may very well prefer the sound of something cheaper, even if you can afford very expensive things.

It seemed to me that Jay was polite but not blown away. The expectation of such a large, grand system could be a tall order (no pun intended). The music selection on the video didn't seem to match the dynamic capability. Not exciting music.

If the listening level is around 75 to 80 db you don't need this many speakers to get there. It's way over kill imo.

You can get an excellent DIY system for MUCH less money that plays plenty loud without looking like overpowering skyskrapers and probably sounds better being played at volume matched to the room size.

Funny.  I got the same impression you did in regards to Jay’s reaction to what he was hearing from audio system at GR Research.  Jay didn’t seem too impressed with the sound, and he couldn’t talk his way around it, because you could see it in his facial expressions.  Just goes to show you how individual each of our audio systems are, and how we may think our systems are the greatest since sliced bread, but others my not feel the same.  Happy listening.

I have audited the GR tower and it has some sonic semblance to the irs that used to be set up at the ps audio factory. I felt the ps audio room was too small for the irs, however. If you are sitting farfield, the room comes way more in play as well.

The weak link in Danny’s rig is not the speaker, imo, but, the dinky caliber electronics Danny tends to use. It almost felt like he either didn’t know that...a certain caliber of electronics existed or didn’t care (i didn’t say it explicitly to his face to upset him, of course). Jay, on the other hand is probably used to a heavy hitting/meatheaded front-end.

Open baffle bass can also throw some people off for a minute.

It would be interesting to see Jay trial that tower in his room with his front-end.

I’ve got the NX-Oticas in my listening room with about $50k of power conditioning and 1st rate cables.  Only have a $25k digital front end, but my rig sounds MUCH better than Danny’s.  I made some of Danny’s cables and they degraded the sound significantly.  Great for modest systems but you don’t want to subject Danny’s NX series speakers to them.

I’ve got a very good 300B integrated amp driving these and most of the folks in our audio club are shocked at how good the SQ is with only 9 watts.

I’m certainly not blown away.  They think those drums sound realistic?

This is drums recorded on a Nikon D750 DSLR in my untreated living room on ~50 year old speakers!

My impression is that Jay's channel is mainly organized around very very expensive gear; it's a Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous for audiophiles. If the GR stuff is not in that price category, I would expect that Jay loving it would be off-brand for his channel's character.

Not too long ago, a couple of dudes on his channel were A/Bing a 100k cable vs some 27 dollar speaker wire from homedepot or something. Both dudes ended up picking the 27 dollar wire (funniest thing i’d seen in a minute...) and Mr. Jay had to come up with some desperate sounding explanation... that the 100k wire didn’t have time to "settle" into his system yet , oh well...

I had the NX-Studio standmount for a few years hooked up to a Yamaha c5000, m5000 stack (technically, a 20k stack, but, immaculately engineering). It gave a shock effect to guys who listened to that combo as well...recently sold that standmount to a dude who very desperately needed it.

I think the sweet spot for "watts" and refinement is somewhere around where that Yamaha M5000 is...for a wider genre of music.

But, here he is still talking about some lousy chip amps with Mr. Jay...doing a disservice to his own speakers @dougthebiker

I guess I'll have to watch the video, but I have found this Jay guy to be very annoying in the videos of his I've watched.

As for the sound the system produces, I wouldn't dream of thinking that can be discerned from a video posted on YouTube.
