Passing signal to my Marantz in Pure Direct mode cuts the signal to the
subwoofer. Can I use a RCA Y splitter and pass one signal to Marantz and
the other to JL audio?
Maybe I misunderstand what you want to accomplish, since the DAC1 has both unbalanced and balanced outputs,
and your
Marantz AV7005
only accept unbalanced RCA analog input, I assumed you connect the DAC1 to the AV7005 via unbalanced cable. You can connect the DAC1 to the
JL Audio F112 sub
via balanced XLR cable without using a
Y splitter
or LOC!. To watch movies
of course you need to swap input of the F112 by plug and unplug both XRL cables from the DAC1 to AV7005 LFE output or using a A/B switcher. https://www.amazon.com/Audibox-Switcher-Stereo-Signal-Switcher/dp/B00ASVXBO8

@imhififan Benchmark DAC 1 has both unbalanced and balanced outputs, the unbalanced rca output connect to Marantz AV7005, balanced xlr output connect to JL F112 sub xlr input directly or via a switcher, so no 'y' cable/adapter needed. That will not work - if Marantz is the preamp the signal will generate from Marantz to the sub.

Yes, if it has both outputs that is even better.

Probably the easiest and best way would be to use either an electronic crossover, or just simply use a y adapter. Benchmark DAC 1

ghulamr,
A Y adapter has a RCA male on one end and 2 RCA females on the other. You plug the RCA male into the Preamp out and then use one of the RCA females for the main amp and the other RCA for the sub. You would need 2 for both channels (R&L). Do a google search I'm sure you have seen them.
What you have inserted in your post would work but looks to be more for car stereo. You can buy high quality Y adapters that won't degrade the signal as much.

What’s the y adapter look like? Sorry a noob here. Will this work ? https://www.crutchfield.com/S-DH5rbymUfUX/g_721/Line-Out-Converters.html

Why would you need a switcher? The sub would be hooked up all the time. It goes off by itself after no signal for about 15 minutes. BTW, I own 4 JL Audio F-113 subs.

imhififan,
Looking at the Jensen unit it looks like you have to use speakon connectors, is that true?
Update: Just talked to Parts Express they had no idea how this thing works, no help!

You can adjust the sub for the proper low level point, however your main speakers would be playing full range. There may be a hump where the frequencies overlap but with adjusting the crossover point on the JL it can be minimized.

I am still a little confused and any help will be great. Willing to try what @millercarbon suggested. Just got 2 questions: 1. If I connect using LOC most on the market are for car audio and says max RMS 50W. Is that a concern. 2. Once I successfully connect the subs using LOC and adjust the crossover on the sub - can I have another XLR connection from my Marantz AV to use as LFE for movies? Will dual setup work? Thanks |
Not if you hook up to a preamp that has a crossover adjustment. Last night I played around and was able to shut off all equalization and Audessy setup in Marantz and manually adjust the crossover for the front R/L to 80hz. Also able to adjust the bass delay to 12ms and both my sub and speakers are now singing sweetly. LOC connection does not provide you with this configuration as a matter to fact gives you double bass. |
That sub does not have a high pass filter. Any way you hook it up the mains will run full range! |
Yes. That’s why the preferred method is using a line level connection which both passes the sub info to the sub while removing this information from the mains.
|
Quick question while we’re on this topic. Would connecting a sub using an LOC from the power amp not pass the entire range to both the speakers and sub? Would there not be a double bass effect? |
Thanks for the info again. |
@millercarbon. Thanks BTW. Stupid question: is there a decent grade LOC unit that you recommend? Also, a few I saw online have a bunch of color coded wires sticking out. Which wires connect to the R/L of the amp speaker output.
Hard as this is to believe this is one where quality does not matter- other than aesthetics, cheap looks cheap- you will never hear the difference. I had to learn all about this earlier this year when adding a distributed bass array. My tube integrated amp had no sub or pre out and the Dayton sub amps only accept line stage inputs. So after learning about this I made a simple mod to the amp, and with a couple cheap resistors converted one unused RCA input into a stereo sub out. Again, because I know nobody will believe this, but go cheap, it just doesn't matter. Another one everyone loves to argue, but its true, don't need both channels because all the low subwoofer range bass is mono. So if you care a lot how it looks and are willing to mod then search for line out converter circuit or let me know and I'll send you the link. Otherwise buy the cheap one at PartsExpress.com You do this and if I understand your system nothing needs to change, just connect the LOC to the speaker on the Marantz, leave the existing RCA connected to the sub but move the other end to the LOC and the sub will now work for everything. Piece of cake. |

Great idea. I like that better as the tonal characteristics of the Simauido W5 amplifier is not lost and both the Von Schweikerts VR4 and the sub will be in sync. Do I simply unplug the RCA inputs at the sub and let the XLR input on the mono remain on the sub when I switch Marantz to watch movies? |
Yes. But a Line Out Converter might be a better solution. The LOC connects to your amps speaker out and drops the signal down to line level allowing you to use the subs RCA inputs. Parts Express has one for under $10. |
