Here is what I call High Fidelity Sound. Sorry if you have issues making a determination
**Ohh YT compression,,,ohh comp speakers can reveal the actual in room listening experience,,,, cheap cam micing...** WEll I can. This is probably the very finest sound I've ever herad froma spaker. Thing is, fouund this video while continuing my research on my next speaker build Fostex Sigma 8 + Fostex Sigma 4 The Sigma 4 is in this video. No doubt, and now i understand what you guys were getting at about **The whizzer thing** making unwanted resonances. Got it Agree. No whizzer. Project should be up by may 2022. Going to sell the DLVX8 TB2145 Good DLVX8 Better Fostex Sigma 8 The Best
I'd like to see any xover type design beat out this Fostex Sigma 106.
OK doing some resaerch in **wide band* *Full Range* *single source* speakers/drivers.
I remember seeing posts on Audiogon some decades back, about the Coral Beat 8..., Seems these FR came out cerca 1970's sold for ??
So it all began in Chicago and Berlin speakers for the movie industry.
These early prottypes were fantastic in human voice, mids.
I can not find the YT vid of the 1929 Colatura(sp?) made in Chicago, Then we have the Klangsfilm and also Siemens same era.
Zeinth, RCA came along 30's,
Next big manufacturers were Electro Voice and Jensen.
Perhaps Altec Lansing were the next big designs in Full Range,, Lowther, Fostex doing their designs. But its really the manufacturer in japan that really opened the possibilities to these magical designs, Coral Beta 8, CB10.
I think CB8 was the new crown jewel of a long history in this wide band design.
WE also should not over look Tannoy/s *concentric* ideas But I think Coral Beta has surpassed everyone in this field at that time, 1970's.
seems AER, Cube, Voxativ bases their designs upon this magneficient Coral Beta 8 **wonder speaker*
I think the Coral Beta 8 was as good as it gets as far as complete total midrange in the concern.
AER, Voxativ both have been around now over a decade. Yet rarely mentioned. Cube has recently made some interesting designs with a high powered Nd magnet motors.
Fostex, Mark Audio, Tang band come in with lower priced offerings , all have a good fan base in asia.
The most recent *new kid on the bloack* is Davidlouis with their VX8 and VX6, both offered in the year 2020.
I did catch a pic of the early prototype. Completely different , far superior design.
Where these FR drivers are headed is anyones guess.
More futher developements??
Don't count on it.
Looks like each manufacturer has settled in to what they feel is best they can offer.
(Aplogies if I left ZU out the discussion)
xover/low sensitivity types just keep on keeping on,,, new/better/the latest, the hottest..
Stereophile's latest issue,,, yep you guessed it, The Wilson,, just one mo time.
Sorry not interested.
The Seas Thor xover/low sens design was quite enough.
To my ears I hear all xover.low sens designs sound as *the same speaker, dif flavor* variations on a theme. A theme that 's like a ,,, excuse the pun, how could I resist,,A Broken Record.
@mozartfan.....I’ve watched about 10 of your videos now (it’s either that or tune in another "Big Bang" episode for the umpteenth time) and for all the railing on you do about only listening to CM, I have yet to see a single CM jewel case perched on your system nor have I heard you cue up the first CM cut
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey yeah well, there are reason(s) I stay mainly with jazz, Diana Krall, Sophie Milman, gatemouth Brown a few others, and yes skip CM. Although I listen exclusively to CM (Is Schnittke, Carter, Pettersson CM.. ?? not really) I do have 1 EllioTT Carter piece with Timpini, to show off bass response. Its somewhere in my stack of videos, .. Listened to Anton Webern, UX250 (aka 50) tube SET amplifier/Cobalt trans((WOW),, pure linear magic,, like music from outer space, as if music w/o gravational pull, as if music fluttering through dark matter of space the nots as bits of light streaming through the inner mind of consciousness. A few reasons I skip CM is 1) most members are mainly interested in jazz, and blues. 2) most jazz recordings have fantastic quality sound reproduction, This allows to hear what the speaker is actually capable of. Flaws become more clearly identifable, noticable. So yeah once the 2A3 amp arrives in 2 weeks, maybe we can hear a CM recording, something like Schnittke w chorus/orchestra. BIS has some high tech micing and excellent quality, where you get to hear what a FR can do with more complex music. Hopefully the 2A3 will offer a tad better response in complex music. Seems the more complex the music (orch/chorus) the more overlaod ona 6 watt SET. You lose some of the pure linear magic of a SET, bass /highs tend to be even more rolled off. Which is why I am looking at some other speakers in bass assist, single 8 inch magnesium by JBL, only avalaible on DavidLouis site and his Seas clone of the Millennium which I sold off.
As I’ve mentioned often, the FR (aka Full Midrange Speaker aka FMS) is not end all be all, you will need assist to make for a more well rounded, full/richer soundstage. The DIYers tag this design as WAW, or something like that. But my dual FMS ,, no one has come up with a tag yet. And the DIYers have given my idea 2 big thumbs down. They think its a *joke* of a speaker. And so have banned me from further posting on THEIR forum.
@mozartfan.....I've watched about 10 of your videos now (it's either that or tune in another "Big Bang" episode for the umpteenth time) and for all the railing on you do about only listening to CM, I have yet to see a single CM jewel case perched on your system nor have I heard you cue up the first CM cut.
Just got word from David, his VX8 is OOS, wood cone not avaliable for production,, maybe 1+ months , back in at the $500 price. So that is indeed great if not fantastic news.
AS soon as the 2A3 amp comes, with stock tubes,,I will upload a few more videos, stay tuned...
You have absoluetly no clue why I post here, do you??? My posts area reference point for newbies who may have some interest in Full Midrange Speaker designs over the next decades. My posts may offer some tips on what these speakers are all about. You guys decided to push the new high tech FR under the bus. I am rescuing this magnificient design from complete total absolute dismiss, ignore, cancel culture. Thats all i am trying to do. Google Davidlouis,, see what you come up with, You will see 100+ posts, scored by mozartfan. Just me on google, and no one else. ..here lets see what happens be right back...... The link is too long,. Just google davidLouis vx8 There you will see all my activity. Nice day,,, ohh and just what are you doing for this hobby, to further its advance into the 21st C??? Lets see your contributions to open up new ideas in this best ever hobby. The DIY forum just gave me the boot, as i failed to get The FR Association Enthusiasts approval, akak The Club. They told me, *how dare you disregard our condemnation of dual Full Midrange design,,after we told you it will not work , its a complete failure...* They got mad as hornets and gave me the boot, I am banned. Permanent. I did not learn even 1 thing off that FR board. Nada. I figured my design out all by myself. and IMHO, I have the worlds finest sounding speaker,,with possibilities of adding new tweaks = new drivers midwoofer and tweeter. Both again from DavidLouis. If both turn out success, my speaker will be 100% Davidlouis all clones of other manufacturers.
Why dual woofers? Well let’s just say that I think that he knows a bit more than you do about speaker design.
~~~~~~~~~~I know nothi9ng above xover designs
. What i am trying to express here is that Greg might wish to ck what his customer’s listening needs are. CM, chamber, light jazz, near field, small room, low SPL, dual woofers are not needed. + if his customer usinga SET amp..well why add ohm load with dual woofers?? Thats all I am trying to give Greg some suggestions. Hey Greg I know you said you had issues with the davidLouyis VX8,,did you note the price jump, double now @ $1k. Still best bang in speaker techology for the price. I have zero complaints about this speaker. nada I did not say its perfect,, but as close as i care for $1k, bargain...and yes it will be even more slow sell at 2x’s price,,, but hey his market is china, asia, not the USA.
davvid is fishing here, but the fish ain’t bitin. The fish love the low sens IN-EFFICIENT style speakers, , speakers that are a mis match for a SET,...In spite of what my tech says. ..and as you guys know lately, my new mantra is SETs are the bomb (street slang for The Best)
No you really dont know your stuff. In fact the amount you get wrong is astounding. But keep monologuing to yourself for as long as you find this cathartic while the rest of us move on.
Funny, I was thinking just last week,, **wow $500 for all that,,,wow..**
And no he does not have to lower the price,, In fact I am going to write to him, now its priced correctly, still a excellent bargain, In fact best bang in all speaker offerings. In any design.
I'm sure that he can also save you money on cabinets as he doesn't believe the looks or construction of them to be import
Coreect, I hiold no faith in cabinets makinga Full Midrange speaker sound **better*. A FMS has to stand on its own.
I could put both Davidlouis ina cardbord box, have music above say 300hz, and both would sound fantastic.
With some attic insulation as a dampener.
caveat, if we are speaking of SPL at say 100 and playing heavy grunge/metal,, then yes,a good solid wood cabinet is necessary.
For my needs/muisc/near field,room size the cardboard box would suit just fine..
I think Bache's come under 100 lb each cabinet.
Let me ck.
But as for dual woofers?? why?
His TB 2145 has some very nice bass slam as it is.
Well congratulations Mr. Bache! You have a new partner, and he has already told you to pare down your lineup as well as what you need to do with whatever speakers are left. I'm sure that he can also save you money on cabinets as he doesn't believe the looks or construction of them to be important.
Amazing...all of this great advice to a man with a successful company from a guy with a cobbled together system that changes every week!
@mozartfan I make my speakers line for all kind of music , Tribeca got 8" assistance woofer, Urban -002 and Lexington got pair smaller 7" and 5 1/4 " same brand Eton (Germany) woofers , last two models play in CAF one month ago. Main idea ---instead use sub to add FR speakers , use quality woofer, no powered, because sub go only to 150Hz ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Yes I did see alot of other designs on your site. OK my bad. Subs only to 150hz?? I thought folks got subs for 10hz bass effects for HT??? Oh well IMHO subs are not meant for music such as jazz, blues, folks, especuially not any CM, which is all I listen to. Agree a high end woofer destroys any sub for musical production. I like ETON, SB Acoustics, Seas and Scanspeak. What I was saying is ~~Why have a 10 inch up to 150hz , and thena 7 midwoofer from 150-500, then comes in the 2145?? You have too many models. Please make choices more simple for the buyer. 3 sizes is all you need. 10 inch woofer, 8 inch woofer, 6 inch woofer assist. Your Fostex horn at $1k really adds to cost factor. I don’t care for nor need a super horn tweeter. I have no dome tweeter witha single 8uf Mundorf EVO SG cap, niceeee, goes as low as 5khz. I had a 2.2 SESGO, not low enough, Sure thats a huge over lap, Who cares?? as long as the dome tweet has excellent voice down to 5khz,, BRING IT ON. My speaker is likea chorus. All over lap fq bands. Dual FR (= Full Midrange Band Width Drivers) single W6 mid( roll off now at 1khz), + tweeter. LOVE the sound. Would not trade my system for any speaker in the world. Futher tweaks, upgrades comming in 2022. Full-Midrange-Speakers are like SET amplification,, simply magical. Only a horn holds this magic,, but horns would never interest me. Leaves FMP (Full Midrange Speaker) as the only choice, the best choice. Your company has good days just ahead, as the FMS assist systems make their way to Front and Center of the speaker world. The REvolution is now happening. It aleady has happened in china. It will begin making its way tom the States starting this year 2022. You just wait and see, , your phone will get busy,, ~~~~~~and you will remember this post~~~~ Caveat, please adjust your prices/smaller ccabinets, I’m running DUAL FMS in a 50 liter light weight TEnnessee Cedar cab,, weighing not more than 30!!!!!!!! lbs. HA!!! vs Wilson’s. 300-1000 lbs per cabinet!!!!!!!! Do the math.. Bigger never was better, Thats nothing more than a myth.
@mozartfan I make my speakers line for all kind of music , Tribeca got 8" assistance woofer, Urban -002 and Lexington got pair smaller 7" and 5 1/4 " same brand Eton (Germany) woofers , last two models play in CAF one month ago. Main idea ---instead use sub to add FR speakers , use quality woofer, no powered, because sub go only to 150Hz , and sound t got gap 150-400 hz ( baffle step issues) ,Woofers and speakers size depend room size. All line perfect works with smaller power tube amps .Tweeter not necessary horn , i agree , my story is , long time ago i was impress limited line Fostex FT 96 EX-2 , just got last pair from Madisound , and got entire stack from Japanize dealer, cross point i set 8-10 Khz so we need actually good sensitivity
@mozartfan Looks like you did not read my last post carefully , I am not say Whizzer cone got distortion , The main stream Speaker audio Manufactor dont use whizzer cone drivers,
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Got ya
Yes I just took a look at a 2015 write up from a Audio magazine, based on the NYC audio show, shows your 3 way with the VIFA Nd 10 inch wood fiber cone woofer ---niceeeee-- + the TB 2145 with whizzer cut off (???why???) + he expensive Fostex horn (= I guess catering to audiophiles that demand super sizzle highs)
Can't find the link this morning.
IMHO even though you altered what I thought was a perfect driver, cutting the whizzer, IN SPITE of this **tweal** I think you have the best complete/total full range speaker on the market.
Witha FR in the house, always and forever destroys all and every xover/low sens types.
aka *The Industry*
.
A bit pricey,,,but compared to what you get at Wilson, Dali, Sonus Faber, Rockport,, as this is the marekt competeing with your speaker,,,,Bache Audio Speakers are a *Steal*.
Caveat, from vague memory, I thought the TB2145 had some beaming???
btw YOU HAVE the 833 SET amplifier?? WOW, super wow,, thats one heck of a tube. Alexius amp.
Have you seen my Dual FR, DLVX8 + DLVX6 youtube?
I have no issues with dual FR.
The DIYers said it can't be done and gave me the boot on THEIR DIY site,,for **Breaking THE FR Association Rules and Regulations** By NOT receiving their approval on such a design.
I did not get my patent approved by the DIYer board 1st before starting my design.
Anyway, all I need is a more sensitive and larger cone woofer.
,,gotta run......
@mozartfan Looks like you did not read my last post carefully , I am not say Whizzer cone got distortion , The main stream Speaker audio Manufactor dont use whizzer cone drivers,
came to decision , no whizzer
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WEll Bache here is my Q to you
IF as you say whizzers only cause problems aka distortion,, then why are the 3 big names all employing whizzers???
Did they, after all these decdaes, get it wrong???
Im not hearing any distortion whatsoever in either Davidlouis.
Net zero distortion.
Now at 110 SPL,, perhaps something might be there,,But at my comfort zone, 60 SPL< both drivers are accurate ad smooth.
I see Fostex hasa Sigma wi8th no whizzer,,, but thing with all Fostex, is the charactistic **house The Shout.
Maybe Fostex has a few with no shout, I dont know this. maybe yes, maybe no.
The issue with the TB2145, is the slight beaming.
Its there as I do recall.
This would grate on my nerves, I shippe it back.
I have no idea what you find offensive in the DLVX8,,, I see you havea pair for sale , with whizzer removed.
IMHO the chinese tech who built the VX8/VX6 hit a grand slam.
Again we should re tag these drivers as ::Full Midrange speakers, not Full Range speakers.
The DIYers finally came over to my new tagging, they resisted in the beginning.
Full-Total-Complete- Midrange-Speakers. w some bass.highs as a bonus.
xover/low sens types that are so so sooooooo super duper popular here on Audiogon and in audiophile land,, IMHO can't compete with a high end FCTMS (aka Fullcompletetotalmidrangespeker)
The xover cult club ignores my beliefs, my researches, my discoveries.
China audiophiles already made the discovery.
I seriously ,,,well lets say in 10 years we will see soe movement away from xover/low sens types and a move towards FMS(aka Full Midrange Speakers)), Its onlya matter of time before this shift takes place. Its my guess half the box xover manufacturers like Zu and Tekton, Wilson, all fold up shop as the new economic downturn begins to grip folks pocket books,.
Wilson $20k+++ vs my DLVX8 $550.
Do the math.
@mozartfan Dont wait up tp May 2022, This product is exist already . i am happy you came to decision , no whizzer , The main problem for whizzer is not distortions. this is like addition low grade additional mechanical twitter , start to work from 3-4 khz and roll over after 8-10 khz, get big pick 6-8 khz and make sound harsh and boxy, So i told you i use TB 2145 with sh--t whizzer cut out, Tried different like DLuis and etc. Stayed with 2145 , i like this cone. Plus efficiency Super Tweeter, 2145 works good fo go down up to 400-500Hz , need support in 400-100 hz, i use efficiency Woofer with cloth surround ( no robber) pro line for fast punch , full body sound. Low bass woofer with no port active necessary to mach 94-95 db, What else ? Nothing Bache -audio 002 is what i am talking about
You know when you found a speaker that makes you a happy camper audiophile>??
Is when you listen to the syms of Allan Pettersson and you say **wow, ok, so thats what I've been missing with all the previous speakers I've owned...**
The emotional impact of the music strikes deep.
btw the DIYers do not accept my design. I left them, angry as hornets.
Acting like a bunch of sour scrouges.
So I left them witha
BAAA Humbug
But did wish them a happy holiday,, tongueincheeck
I’ve heard plenty of full range speakers. Voxativ, Cube Audio, Lowther, and plenty more.
And yes, they do some things very well. But they trade off way too much to be completely satisfying, for me.
Maybe if I had enough money to have a second system, just for listening to chamber music, and acoustic jazz (like most of what is released on the ECM label), I would own a some FR speakers.
But I listen to much more music that requires substantially lower bass, dynamics, and more detail in the upper frequencies. Modern, avant-garde and contemporary orchestral classical music, intense jazz and electric jazz, and various forms of intense progressive music.
For me, I would be losing a lot more fidelity, by only having a pair of FR speakers, than I would be gaining from them.
absolutely no effect ~~~~ WEll I was being extreme in order to make a certain perspective. I’ve seen folks talking about placement etc. Some take it as serious business. I don’t I mean yes, having the speakers 5 ft apart before and now clearing some room/re-arraging , now i have the speakers as wide as the room will allow 8-10 feet. Now they breathe better. In that sense, it worked out nicely. But saying 2 ft from back wall, 1 ft, 3 ft, alittle more here, there, ,,back and forth,,no, thats pure snakeoil Ifa speaker, take a xover stype for instance,,has any sort of flaw in the 100hz-4khz range, theres nothing that can make it *right* = new placement will not make the flaw in this critical range disappear, smooth over. This is what I am trying to say..
I also mentioned to the DIYers that I hold no belief in cabinet design as making/breakinga FR performance,,
,Ohhh how that grates their nerves.
I also told the FR DIYers, I could place the dual DLVX’s ina cardborad box, and above say 200hz music,, they would sound JUST AS fantastic as in my 50 liter cabinet,,,
ohh how that stirred up a hornets nest. They REALLY and TRULY believe a cabinet design, complex, and by measurements, and such, amkes a speaker sound better or worse. Thats baloney
Either a FR can sing or it can not sing. No amount of complex fancy smansy cabinet design is going to make a FR that croaks like a frog,
sing like a angel.
Just aint.
A FR has to stand on its own, either it has the golden voice or it does not. My DL has a golden voice. My cabinet has gaps, holes, mis matched sides, all over the place. Nice day to you Please revisit my room any time you wish. Doors are wide open to the xover style speakerfan-atics.
When someone says that placement in the room has absolutely no effect on how a speaker sounds(@mozartfan I'm talking to you) I completely discount anything they have to say after that.
xover types are attempting to carry the 3 bands, and IMHO have failed to deliver the fidelity in the midrange.
Been therev done that.
The W18 does havea simple xover, the wteetera single cap,
I just addeda Mundorf supreme 10 uf to the other M Supreme 10 uf cap, now the W19 is rolling off at 900hz. perfect.
Thats all I need, at 87 db, only registers bass...The SET does not have much bass, so i really can not test the W16 out til the big Defy is up and running.
But I know a 20 uf will be perfect for paded bass,
8 uf cap on tweeter 5khz to 15khz, excellent for added sheen.
Dual FR carry complete total midrange with stunning success.
Well, here we go back to where we started. You espouse the virtues of FR and denigrate multi driver speakers with crossovers, and then finally admit that they can't do the job by themselves anyway. (which we all knew)
You'll probably counter that by saying that you're not using a crossover with the Seas Excel driver, but then as we also know, that has its own problems.
In the end I guess it doesn't matter. All that matters is if the end user is pleased, and it's apparent that you're not too picky and are easily satisfied.
big gaping hole in each one which will of course undermine the performanc
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Have attic insulation stuffed in the hole, you can't see it from the video.
Ported at bottom.
I might re add in the other Seas W18E001, after Defy is up N running.
Might be too many ohm load,
dual FR + tweeter + dual W18,, thats a very low ohm load,, Not sure Defy can handle the stress, + the tube wear with heavy ohm load.
The Defy has much more bass vs the SET, so don't think need a second W18,,, I will slice off the top of cabinet and place a nice Tennessee cedar plant on top. , = There hole eliminated.
The DIYers wish that we all keep to a correct tag for these speakers, aka Full Range = FR
When in truth they are not really FULL -Range
Truth is these mysterious drivers are Full-Midrange-speakers with added bass, added highs.
Sure I am not speakering for all other FR speaker manufacturers,
But as we know from Joah over at Madisound.
Quote: **you can get 2 of the 3 but never 3 of the 3*,,
Josh mentions its not his original idea, he borrowed froma speaker geek.
While we were discussing the fantastic Seas Excel line of drivers.
So why bring this up?
AER/Voxativ/Cube (we will leave out TB, Fostex, Mark Audio at the moment)) all 3 majors, do not have drivers that can excel in all 3 band widths.
The law of science, physics, says it is not possible.
Close but no cigar
Yeah I know Voxativ, Cube and AER all claim, 20hz - 30k+++ hz (AER says 80khz,,huge RED flag there).
Lets say the big 3 go down to 20hz, and all 3 up to 20khz++.
OK, Now what about the midrange??
Well?
Do the 3 get stars in midrange performance?
Impossible.
The law od speaker physics says , you can get 2 of the 3 but never 3 of 3.
So what the chinese geek did was this
He gives you good bass (all depends on what map/recording you have playing) , gives good highs (depends on amp/music recoding you have), and excellent midrange.
What, or why do we love Full-Midrange-Speakers?
A: complete total mid band width/seamless, linear.
Thus the need for added assist,
I have not heard Voxativa's higher end wood cone driver, nor any AER, not Cube.
But as speaker physics go, 2 of 3, never 3 of 3. Somewhere their drivers are not any better than my much lower priced Davidlouis.
DavidLouis is like a fine Bordeux, which as we know mixes different high quality grapes together to make a nice balanced blended wine.
One very smart tech there in the DavidLouis manufacturing plant.
Which is why ho did not make alot of models as does all/every FR manufacturer.
To me thats a big fat red flag. Whats their issue, they can't get it right??
True DavidLouis is a 2020 design. All other labs speakers are now 5-20 yrs old.
The DavidLouis is the latest/newest FR on the market. ,, and IMHO the best bang for the buck.
No sarcasm here, just an honest question. If the FR drivers are so good by themselves, why would you need to use the other speakers with them, especially when they have a big gaping hole in each one which will of course undermine the performance of that mid woofer? Isn't the idea of the FR drivers that they are Full Range?
I think that they're leaving you alone because this is more of a private diary speaking to yourself than a discussion. I read it, because your claims of "Major Discoveries" with those broken down cabinets are really amusing.
I wish to sincerely shout out a thanks to the Audiogon moderators for allowing me the right to free expression.
AS we all know, freedom to speak ones mind is each and every day losing ground to the Establisment Moderators, such over at Youtube, at work places, etc etc.
Most likely the mods have received requests that some of my posts be clocked, deleted, canceled (Cancel culture is thriving),, and possibly with a theat such as
**either you boot THAT guy,, or I;'m leaving and others like me too...** haha.
WEll guess what, the mods figured better a place with open mic vs a place with snobs around.
w/o free expression, civil , courteous mind you, respectful, this forum would be just like any other discussion forum.
Its freedom to express what one believes and is open to EDU ones thoughts ideas that will continue to make Audiogon the worlds best discussion of all things audio.
Which it is.
If you dont like some of the things I express, hit the ignore buttom, Its quite easy,
Now do I feel I have made a major discovery in the realm of Full Range speaker design.
