Thanks for posting. Been a huge Ry fan since I first heard him in the mid 70's. I've only had one chance to see him live and that was at the Edmonton Folk Festival when he was touring as the guitarist for Ali Farka Toure. Mr. Cooder just stayed in the background and played a lot of slide guitar, amongst other things. Interesting performance. Cheers.

Paris, France, 1980. Maybe some of you have seen this. I just discovered it, today:

I've never seen him live, to my regret. One of my all time favorite musicians, though. I think my favorite group of his was the one on teh album Showtime. In case you haven't seen this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyCtEDGG_jI&list=PL5D5ADD135428963F

@stuartk I have watched that concert several times. I like that it was well recorded in good definition. Thanks. |
Glad you enjoyed it. You tube has some awful dreck but also many treasures. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgOkW2tiAaY&list=RDKgOkW2tiAaY&start_radio=1
Here he is with S. Landreth.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etf7B3Wu5X8&list=RDetf7B3Wu5X8&start_radio=1 I’ve seen him just once, as a solo act at the Crest Theater in Sacramento. Great musician and as it turned out, a great entertainer. A thoroughly enjoyable show, on all levels.
Agree those are all fine artists... have you heard this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NlifDYDUuHI&list=OLAK5uy_kcudMovJwUWTnkYFSsff3Iup7VYQi4ESA&index=2

@stuartk The Old Grey Whistle Test was such a great program. Soooooo many performances I've loved over the years. I got to see Emmylou Harris back in the 80's at the University of Alberta. The Myer Horowitz Theater to be exact. 683 seats. What I remember about her show was the configuration of the stage. All the musicians were set up in a straight line. Emmylou in the middle and the drums on one end. It struck me she was saying everyone is equal in this performance. Great show. I've seen many fabulous shows at that venue over the years. From Johnny Winter to David Grisman. The most recent was Dweezil Zappa performing the entire Hot Rats LP. Saw his father a few times. Always fun. Cheers. |
@stuartk yes I have heard it, bought it when it first came out on vinyl and included a CD version that stays in my truck. The vinyl is wonderfully done as is the CD and the sound quality is a 10. Don’t overlook his second album from 1970, From a whisper to a scream w/Mac Rebennack and also The River in Reverse, with Elvis Costello and the Crescent City Horns with one of my favorite AT songs, All These Things, which my date and I danced cheek to cheek to @ Pauls Lounge in Jenerette La. with AT and his band playing at my Senior prom in 1970. Thanks for stirring up these memories. Enjoy the music |
Well, it’s pretty great on the record, so I have no difficulty believing you! Will look those up. Thanks! I saw her in ’76 and then, The Hot Band with Rodney doing all the lead vocals, at the Bluebird Cafe a few years later, with both F. Reckard and A. Lee on guitar. these gigs were in Santa Barbara, which was a music lover’s paradise in the 70’s. You know the saying: "There are only two kinds of men in this world; those who are in love with EmmyLou and those who've yet to discover her". ;o)

I became acquainted with these guys about 20 years ago after finding myself living with some true number one fans. Everything on shuffle as we worked a jigsaw puzzle together. Good times. I didn’t know whose song was which or what they were called then. And that’s the last time they were on my radar until I started picking up records again. I found a nice trove of Ry and I feel robbed not knowing this man sooner. And listening. One of my favorite late-game discoveries. |
