Re previous post above... I also read a great description of a tube amp where the reviewer said that turning up the volume didn't so much increase the sound level, instead it increased the expansiveness of the sound stage and filled out the detail.
I don't think is waiting for a special occasion to release them, its probably more so getting the tapes cooked and cleaned, transferred, then mastered and then releasing in the order they feel fit. haha...
Btw, the vinyl version of 10-14-83 is much better than the cd release. I'll extend my hightail offer to include my 24/96 vinyl transfer of this show, too.
The cornell 5 8 77....dbx decoded....24/48...mastered by myself and not available on archive.org. the original digital copy came from the master reel to reel and given to me before the archive was up and running.
Yes, you can listen to this show all day long from archive.org but not this version, which, IMHO, slays the rest.
If interested PM me you email and I will hightail it to you. I'm stopping at 3, though.
So in addition to everything that's been recommended here don't forget that Tidal, and Spotify, have TONS of live Dead shows including most of the Road Trips and Downloads series and lots of Dicks Picks. And great sound quality on Tidal.
I'm pretty sure there is no transfer or remastering of the 5-8-77 Betty done by Charlie Miller. The circulating MSR>D copies all come from Dougal Donaldson's PCM (on VHS) copy made at the original (and only, so far!) transfer session. Bob Menke has an all-analog version on Beta HiFi but I don't think anyone has transferred that to digital. Rob Eaton then dbx-decoded a DAT transfer (from Dougal's PCM) using his studio equipment. Since the original is at 16/44.056, there is unlikely to be an advantage to using a higher digital resolution IMHO.
Most subscribers got their copies Thurs or Fri. Sound quality is a bit disappointing but better than the previously circulating SBD. Disc 2 contains one of their best jam/medleys
The recent Rhino 4-LP clear vinyl of Capitol Theater Passaic NJ 4/25/77 is a home run. Excellent performance and SQ and not a click or pop from end to end.
Listened last night very solid overall, but much preferred 7/16 over 7/17 that Playin>Cosmic Charlie>Spanish Jam chunk is really great and very melodic for a Playin jam.
Checked Tidal the other night. Seems most Dead stuff is on it . . . complete Dick's Picks, Road Trips, Download Series, Europe '72 series, etc., as well as original studio albums and Complete Studio Collection, Fare Thee Well, and Red Rocks, though no Dave's Picks.
I wanted to listen to Fillmore 1969, but my fat finger hit Dick's Picks #36. Philadelphia 9/21/72. Huh? My first Dead show? I knew it was 1972, but didn't remember the exact date. Checked my ticket stub . . . Yup! Serendipity? Then, I relived it. Thank you Tidal!
Also, Live Music Archive is available on my Squeezebox Touch . . . Dead recordings sorted by year. 2000+ shows? Not in MY lifetime! HAHA!
Hello Jafant - I received my 78 Red Rocks box set and I must say that I was not impressed. You will note that I have and can say with conviction every disc / box set and current subscriptions issued for and by the Grateful Dead .....and this box set is NOT one of my favorites. The Europe 72 to give you a reference point is still my favorite as that was the Grateful Dead. They must have doing massive amounts of cocaine at these shows and at that time I do believe they were as the music's tempo is totally jacked up.....each song ends on the same type of crescendo....and Donna ought to have been shot for ruining each song with her off key singing ...no screaming on this tour. Bobby was not that far behind. Naaaw......not my favorite and the songs and set list were very predictable. I saw them in 78 .....but don't remember .
@garebear Yeah that's funny, upon first listen to the 24/192 July 78 "Bettyboards" shows, one of the things that jumped out was how badly off key Donna's vocals were in some spots. Never been a fan of her, but this was the most obvious vocal crime I've heard recently.
I will keep your comments in mind about the fast tempo, etc. next time I listen to them. Overall I like the mix of playlists from these 5 shows. Cheers, Spencer
Actually, increasing the sampling frequency can remove some of the hardware issues with the implementation of brickwall filtering and the effect that it has on overall sound. Your mileage may very, though.
The Daves Picks that have been coming out are not well mastered in my opinion. They are very dark and just not EQ'd like Dead music should be. When you compare the quality to the earlier Dicks Picks, it is quite a difference. I was being lambasted for that opinion on Hoffman forums but it's very easy to hear if you have a good system.
Do not feel bad- joker. The SH forums is very informative, yet, operated by communists as well.
In the Dick's series, he was a true professional recording engineer by trade. Dave's offerings are more in the way of fanfare recordings. Not bad, different.
