Cary Audio SLP-5 Preamp

Received my new preamp on Friday. Cary Audio was having a sale so jumped on it. Wanted this preamp for a long time. So far it has lived up to its reputation. If it is this good, then excited about when it reaches its 100 hours for break in. I had Supratek Cabernet before this and will probably compare it when its fully broken in. It is gorgeous to look at better than Supratek though Supratek also looks beautiful. Now I have an external headphone amp Little Dot MKIII but the one in SLP-5 is no slouch. This is just a preliminary evaluation, but I will keep you guys posted. Very excited.

Congrats!  The 05 is an amazing sounding preamp.  Be sure to match it with lower gain power amps.  Mine is here to stay!

Hi blackbag20  system is:

Parasound A21 Amplifier

Aesthtix Rhea Phono Preamp

Marantz CD 6005

Michell Gyro SE Turntable

Technics SL1200 MKII Turntable

Cables: Audioquest Hurricane and Blizzard power cords.

Interconnects: Nordost Valkyrja and Tyr.

Speaker Cable: Notdost Heimdall.

@couger4u

i had the parasound a21+ for a while and found that the sound was best through balanced connections, gain on the SLP 05 at 50% and gain on the a21+ also at 50%.  see if that helps

@avanti1960

I also have the 21+. Did you have subs connected to it? Reason I ask is when reducing gain on it, the lower frequencies don't diminish as much as the other frequencies. Which I like as it gives me an additional way to tune the sound. By example I have the gain set to 1pm for analog, 2pm for CDs and full gain for streaming. Just curious about your experience.

Congratulations on your new preamp. I remember meeting Dennis Had back in the 1990s when I worked in a shop that sold Cary Audio. He was a very nice guy who was super helpful and knowledgeable. I had a great friend who had him build his amplifiers custom for him. Those were sweet sounding mono blocks.

@baylinor

yes i had rel subs but they were high level speaker connections and i never noticed gain controls affecting sub output.
