Blown driver

I left my stereo on for my house keeper while I went to work, bad plan. I came home to a blown driver in my one of my B&W 803s speakers. I ordered one & one just in case. My question is do I replace all four or not. They aren't cheap. The speakers are getting a little age on them & so am I.  My amp is in excellent condition & rated at 375 WPC. I've played them very loud with no problems. Thoughts?

Blown like no sound or blown like scrapes and sounds awful? Usually what happens is some combination of the voice coil gets hot enough or the excursions great enough it burns and/or scrapes in the gap, and once this starts if you don't catch it right away, well its not getting any better, it can burn completely or scrape bad enough to stop working altogether. They can be rebuilt just like surrounds can be redone but usually costlier than to replace the whole driver.

The one that's blown is blown. The others may or may not be damaged. Damage usually is something like the voice coil got hot enough to burn some insulation, but not enough to short completely out. Or alignment got off due to high excursion which combined with heat could deform the voice coil. In any of these situations it can rub or scrape and if it does you will hear it. I would play a sweep tone and/or listen to music with a range of pure tones at a good volume level and not replace anything unless something sounds amiss.

Blown like sounds terrible. Scrapes, rattles & pops. I'm just worried the rest are damaged.

Maybe. But if not they sure will be if you don't fire that housekeeper.
Is it possible your housekeeper tried to vacuum the drivers?? It is quite common unless you explain ahead of time.

I'd suggest you buy 2, and use the other one only when needed.

Best,

E
Well, it could be the vacuum, or dusting, don't blame the house keeper, I can't tell you how many people have walked into my home and immediately wanted to touch the drivers or push them in.  Unless you take the time to explain what seems normal to us, they won't know.
I agree with Erik_squires.  Sometimes we assume that other's know how to handle themselves around our equipment and that leads to trouble.

I had a home I shared with my significant other.  She had a house keeper come by ever other week.  I specifically told her to tell the house keeper to stay away from my equipment, especially the turn table.  Did she listen?  no.

She tried to dust the turntable.  Took the cover off and guess what?  you know.  Broken cartridge.

vacuumed the speaker drivers huh?  wow.

enjoy
It could be anything, vacuuming or aggressive dusting could have left something in the voice coil.
Does she wear one of those cute little French maid outfits?

If affirmative, how much did you say you were paying her per hour?
Hi,
try to find out if she enjoyed playing it loud just of curiosity.
Then you have some of your answer. If vacuuming.....
jetter, you wouldn't want to see her in one of those.

It was about half volume & that's real loud.
Your speakers can be repaired at the cost of one (or two) tweeter(s).
There will be no warrantee on your B&Ws.
In fact there is never any warrantee on any speaker (despite the high gloss add papers tell something different): The manufacturers exclude
- mechanical damage (e.g. if you stumble, fall into the cone and damage it- or a cat rapped your beloved transducers)
- electrical damage (if the voice coil burns/melts)
- ...and do you know any other damage that might happen? So you see...

No manufacturer will ever feel responsible for a damaged speaker!

Regards and good luck,
Jan
Have blown several speakers in my day. IME reconing is far cheaper than a new speaker as long as there is a recone kit that fits your basket.

If your other speakers sound OK then they are OK and no need to replace them.

I suspect some type of electrical spike/surge went through your system when something with an electric motor was turned on.
Blown Driver update. Installed new driver today. Darn, it sounds more responsive & smoother right out of the box. Now I'm thinking three more to go.  I thought it would take some break in time. On it goes.
