Pro's who I have learned a lot from Albertporter, Twl, Tok20000, Geoff_Kait and most influential person on my system Jtinn- with every suggestion I become much closer to musical bliss.
There are countless other's who I have become friends with over the years it would be impossible to name everyone. I don't think any ONE person makes this place great, its the diversity and willingness to learn paired with everyone being in pursuit of greater musical enjoyment. I am proud to be a contributing member here, if you can help one person get closer to there audio nirvana- bringing joy into there life- how can you NOT offer help? The world is so messed up today, a community like this is unheard of, and for the most part self-governing- its a model for what society should be like. Anyone in doubt look at the recent thread about Pat(Lugnut).
But as usual I digress..... these were just my late night ramblings. |

There are many members who have been helpful and friendly. Shoot an email to most audiogoners and they'll generally take the time to reply (unless they happen to have ruthless email filters!)
Mike Lavigne, Tireguy, Panorama have taken the most time to share their experiences with me (or perhaps it's because I bother them the most). Jtinn, although he does not fit into your criteria as he has commercial interests, has always given me advice without much regard to what he carries.
I think there's an "expert" for every musical tastes around here, so you'll easily find someone who is knowledgeable and shares similar tastes and thus their advice becomes invaluable. |
This is very helpful. You can look up these members and read their posts/answers to reap their vast knowledge and experience. |

Yeah, where's David [Dekay] been? Now there's a guy that really helped out in my early days here.
Also, Duke [Audiokinesis] took a great deal of time to help me out a couple years ago planning a subwoofer project.
And Sakahara is someone that buys and sells stuff here, but I never see him in the forums. Three years ago when I started to experiment with tubes, he gave this slow learning newbee the long lowdown on "rolling".
Definitely Tom [TWL] and DougDeacon for their analog expertise. I'm too afraid to take the plunge, but they always get me a itching for some vinyl.
Thanks to Sean for sharing his vast experience and Newbee for the same because he is anything but...
I thought I'd add a stuntman category, since they get no acknowledgement by the Oscars. These people contribute immensely to keeping the sanity and fun on the 'GoN.

Thank you for the kind comments. I too am so appreciative of the myriad of excellent suggestions from so many members. I think it was Sogood51 who wrote, "if you can hear the sub, it's too loud." What a difference such comments make.
There is no question that my road into this hobby would have been one riddled with potholes had it not been for the invaluable foundation laid out by Marco (Jax2). Whether recommending components or music, his matchmaking capabilities are unmatched.
This is one amazing community.

On a tangent, I would like to nominate some of the Audiogoners who have become close friends, who I don't really see much of anymore, and I miss dearly here in the forums. The people on this list are as knowledgeable and passionate an audiophile as one will EVER meet.
God knows that I am going to forget a few. In alphabetical order - or as close as this dummy can come to it:
Brulee - a divine being, without question THE BEST EVER!!!
Carl_eber - Audiogon was at the zenith when he was the big dog
Dekay - relentless, passioned, incredible
Garfish - smart, practical, intellectual, kind, sense of humor
Gthirteen - salt of the earth, realistic, moving forward
Jadem6 - sensitive(overly?), zealous, meticulous
Jcbtubes - seen and heard the best, and can build it, like the true stars in life he was modest
Joecoherent - Silverline, Silverline, Silverline
Leafs - tells it like it is, hockey, Coincidents, Well Tempered, and Rogue
Natalie - uhhh, see above?
Redkiwi - sharp wit, different perspectives, valuable
Rockvirgo - no BS, knows the wheat from the chaff

Living in an audiophile starved area with only a very few others can leed one to beleave that he knows a little something about audio...after all, those boys down at Best Buy do seem somewhat slow to grasp what your are talking about sometimes.
Finding Audiogon for me was almost an "Matrix" type of experience. Set in the chair..plug in, WOW!...a direct link to another reality (With a HUGE brain) at it's center.
Every day I pickup a scrap of useful info from at least one of the people here (old members and new) and have humbled by the knowledge of you people.
I would like to name those members but the list would be incomplete, certainly all those listed above have provided much to my knowledge even over and above audio...many a good long laugh also, some real wit around here IMHO thats hard to find at some of the other forums!
Well, gotta go...our boss here at Circut City is on the rag!, seems that Best Buy tops us in sales last week.

Left out Audiokinesis due to the thread requirement of no commercial interest. Since Duke always reveals his business interests I think he qualifies. He has a most honorable history of suggesting products he does not sell.

If I could I would put the list of all Audiogoner here and make only one change, strike out my own name.
I have yet to come across anyone who has not been helpful. Some of them have gone out of their way to help and most are already mentioned on the thread.
As they say "music is food for the soul" so I believe everyone here on A'gon is wellfed! |

That is an excellent list and I agree completely with it. I have often wondered why we dont here much from many of them any more. I miss them too. I would have added one other name that I liked though some may disagree. Asa. I liked his willingness to take on all comers, his passion for what he beleived in and his knowledge. I hope they are all well and just enjoying music! |

I agree totally. Those guys were posting regularly when i first got into the hobby. I couidn't get enuff of audiogon. Their posts were informative and witty. Maybe i'm getting a little burned out but i really enjoyed those days! |
He didn't specify a model, I am sure assuming my budget was more than it was, but after inquiring about Blue Circle, which had buzz at the time, he basically scoffed and later mentioned Counterpoint. With little else to go on, other than mentally attaching a great system with the owner who gave me advice, I bought the Counterpoint model I could afford. And I still dig it. Thanks Albert ;)
Also, the comic unveiling of audio insanity, Sluggo's and SonofSluggo's (yes I know who it was) was as funny as it ever got here. The way his posts reverberated down the thread with offended responses was just terrific. Plant-a-seed humor, I guess.
Zaikesman is an excellent observer and makes great points about hi-fi in general, and I wish I could write as well.
