Amp will not power off

OP, so you want to try a tube preamp?!  Okay, here is something for you to "chew" on, so to speak...  this Hovland HP-100 is in nice shape it appears; it does not include the phono section though if you need one...

If a used gear scares you off, I don't blame you.  I've heard this and it is pretty darn good.  This is the Schiit Freya +, and as you can see, it has a tube driver stage in it.

Thanks for the info on the Melos preamp. That was the 1st Melos preamp followed by many others. It was a great buy only costing about $1000 including moving coil phono. The GK1 brings back lots of good memories.

Melos was a pretty creative company with one of the 1st memory player CD players and super high power triode output tube amps of 400 watts mono blocks and 200 watts stereo.

Good on replacing the switch, as even though fused it's no longer safe to have in the power circuit.

Although the defective power switch contacts stuck together, you will never know when it will decide to come loose, create arcing heat up the contacts, worst case scenario is burn out the surrounding wires/components or even catch fire! 

BTW, the power switch is a snap-in design with quick disconnect terminals, just take a few minutes to replace and no soldering required.

Never had a tube preamp. Was always wanting to try one with my SS amps. This was a fun experiment. It was only for a few hours but I noticed differences. More with some songs than others.

I know this preamp is probably not considered too hifi but was good to experience different components.

He also brought over an old Golden Tube Audio SE-40 amp. That was also nice to try. Noticed the biggest difference sonically with my old B&W Matrix 801 S2s. Also hooked up my LRSs and then my Harbeth SHL5+40s. The B&Ws sounded less "harsh?" in the high frequencies. Maybe some less detail but a nice texture.

Really would like to try some higher end tube components.

I guess even for a novice like me, it is true that listening is really important. Sure, reading reviews and checking measurements is cool to do. But there is no substitute to really listening to a new/different component in your own familiar system, in your familiar listening room.

Doesn’t cost anything but your time.

Not me buddy, but I sure wouldn't mind one or two. :-) You can sure see the Pass design. I have a few Pass designs here. Threshold, Adcom, Pass, First Watt.

I've known a few Forte fans, I've seen them really hot rodded too. The can really put out the watts. Fry eggs on them too..:-) Threshold heat wise, are close.

The power single pole switch is shot , a lighted switch $15 allied, even Parts connecxion just measure for many won’t fit and ,that company mayb3 out of business.

Using the power strip for now until the switch arrives.

You don't even have to replace the switch if you plug it into a switched outlet or power strip.

Had to replace the 20 amp Leviton switch on my SAE X-25A due to a similar problem after 38 years.

Not a biggie.

Replace the switch or just leave it powered on.

Yeah - I had an old Belles amp that had a power surge on turn on that would weld the switch contacts together after awhile.  I sidestepped the problem by using a heavy duty power strip - if it ever did the contacts in that in I could just replace it.
