I wouldn’t assume that a solid state amp would automatically sound better at lower volume. Some speakers need a bit of juice to open up. Just the way it is. That said, most Accuphase integrateds have tone controls, which can be used to adjust the sound at lower volume. Or you could buy a Schitt Loki equalizer for a little over $100 and use that at soft volume. If you're really hung on Accuphase, David Michael audio has a demo integrated for sale for $3k that looks great. I would have bought it but it's too big and heavy for me. The thing is BIG. Check dimensions before you buy. |
correct ac voltage is really important
i think it is unwise to use a voltage transformer long term for expensive high end audio equipment, esp one that draws substantial current
transformer blows u will have major headaches |
I would not buy with incorrect voltage. As jjss49 said above, you may be asking for problems.
That is before remembering that audiophilia is full of arguments about cable direction, fuse color, and similar details and that you are about to add another transformer of whatever quality.

Read several articles about Accuphase using dual voltage transformers. Requires internal rewiring, may want to look that up. :)

If you’re looking at $5k, I would check out the new NAD M33 integrated, it has a (supposedly) revolutionary Purifi Class D SS 200 wpc amp, Dirac Live room correction, high quality DAC, and the BlueOS for streaming. According to a recent inquiry at NAD’s customer service, I was told they’d be shipping end of August, and September.

there is a ytube vid from alpha Audio yday with 5 integrated amps on a Vocal speaker. Have a look there to find out, what amps are a great match with Vocal speakers. Tube amp seems to be not a good match.

You also will not be able to obtain service (rarely needed) from Accuphase or distributor if you buy a Japanese version.
Find one sold buy a US dealer/Distributor (Axxis Audio)
i have owned, and still own many Accuphase products and fortunately never need service. Sound, looks, design, build quality...killer

I regret the day I sold my stack of Accuphase components to my nephew. I have had several really great systems and my Accuphase stack was probably the best (until my newest and latest BAT system). Accuphase has a wonderful sonic signature and the build quality is superb. However, I really don't recommend buying any unit that is not made for the U.S. electrical system. If you really want Accuphase then search for a U.S. model. The Focal speaker line is rather efficient, most models at 92db efficiency, and delivers very good "slam" at low volume. But of course, "slam" is relative to what one desires. I personally like my music to be played with some good current delivery and, thus, keep the volume up a bit getting me some good slam. Upscale Audio sells a ton of Prima Luna combined with Focal speakers. That seems to be their go-to speaker brand when selling PL integrated amps or component amps. Be sure that you are connecting the speaker cables to the correct taps on the PL amp. For those speakers the speaker cables should be connected to the 8 ohm taps. Unless I am incorrect, I believe that your speakers are 8 Ohms, nominal. Check the speaker specification, check your connections, then try some more listening, just to be certain. Good luck on your quest. |
Hi yes I have the PL hp now . The focals are 4 ohms but upscale audio said to try them on the 8 ohms tap but was afraid to do that , why would you want to do that and is it safe , I would like an answer to that , I would like to try it if it’s safe , thanks again for your help , Lloyd |
do not buy 100V import units.

What is the real problem with having a power transformer in the house for this purpose? If it is rated to supply the correct amount of current to the amplifier, why would it matter? There are step up and step down transformers all over the grid. I am trying to understand what the issue is. |
Lloyd, I doubt that placing the connections of the 4ohm speaker to an 8ohm tap will cause any harm. However, if you are concerned about the potential of harm then reach out to Upscale Audio again and ask that question. They are very well informed on both of the brands in question and will surely provide you with a correct answer. AS long as there is no potential harm then make the connection and give it a listen. Maybe you will be satisfied to a point there is no need to change out your equipment. Best to you. |
"If you really want Accuphase then search for a U.S. model” -What is “US Model”?
All Accuphase Amps/PreAmps for all World Markets are the same, use the same components, and all have internal switchboard to set power to 100/117/220/240V AC 50/60Hz.
