Oppo 205 guagers selling used units for twice the price...
You are paying a lot of money for on board processing when you could just buy a competent deck to use as a transport and route the digital output to a really good AV preamp with all the processing power you could want.  To each his own.
Pro Amps - What have you tried?
I've listened to some decent Crown power amps as well as some Bryston gear - the lowest output pro power amp, the 2B is particularly nice sounding and I have a pro version (the only difference being no power switch as they are intended to be gange...
Is a GREAT turntable under $2000 possible???
IMHO, the best way to go if you are a discerning buyer, is to get a used table/arm and maybe cartridge ensemble that cost up to $6K for your $2K.....People that own that sort of table tend to take very, very good care of them and you can find some...
Thoughts on the most difficult instruments for speakers to reproduce?
My wife plays piano. I am a lapsed student of the instrument.I put on some audiophile record (forget what it was, but it had excellent piano reproduction) on the big system and she called from the other room - "Is that YOU??"  It sounded so much l...
Wilson Speakers & Reviewers
Handyman - your set up is similar to minehttp://www.rhodo.citymax.com/i/non-rhodo/wilsons.jpgI have also kept them on the casters for fine tuning.Set up is greatly helped by having a helper with a laser that measures distance and the Wilson tables.
Wilson Speakers & Reviewers
I too have the Max 2's and they were a real PITA to set up. Lucky for me I knew the hassle expected, as I have had WP's before(and still do), and knew what I was getting into in regards to placement. My experience with Wilsons is that for them ...
Why do I see more Vandersteen model 3s vs model 2s for sale?
I have been in touch once in awhile with Richard Vandersteen and he is quite approachable (although he was a tad stand-offish when he thought I had blown a mid range driver in my 4As due to abuse until I explained it was a power amp failure).  Why...
Wilson Speakers & Reviewers
I was never that taken with the WP systems, certainly never enough to be tempted to buy a pair, and remained happy with my large Vandersteens for many years despite the complexities of separate bass crossover, multiamping and wiring.  Then I heard...
Who still listens to their First Generation Cd Players?
I currently listen to most of my digital from a server which has my ~ CDs ripped in FLAC and easily accessible, although in my main system I do have an Emotiva ERC-3 in the main system for playing discs. But I do have a unit that has been excellent...
Digitizing LPs
I ripped 4,000 CDs in my collection and it took me a long time (I did it while watching TV in the evenings).  No way would I want to rip in actual time on a turntable. If someone comes up with a laser player like the Finial that rotates the laser r...
Should I eliminate my preamp?
The advice given is good.   If your inputs are limited to one and that is the digital input with variable output, you have nothing to lose by using it instead of a preamp, unless the digital volume control were noisy for some reason.I have one pre...
Would you change your amp selection knowing...?
Selecting a different amp to suit your cables is like buying a new car because you can't get spark plugs for the old one in your favourite brand. If the amp is a good one, toss the cables, There are lots of cables out there but finding a really goo...
Speakers "Disappearing"
Not a ton of speakers where you can close your eyes and imagine yourself in a concert space, but the best accomplish that. If the engineers dicked around with the multi-track, though, it isn't going to sound like it would in a real room  Haven't a...
PSE Studio V acquisition
Just noticed this.I use a pair of mono PSE V on the bass of my Vandersteen 4As. Lots of punch and nothing bad to say about them.
Phono stage gain too high??? Should I return it??
It is a sign from the Audio Gods that you have permission to buy new low efficiency speakers - some 83 dB efficient electrostats should have that volume right about where you need it!
