Whats in your second system?
My second system is a combination of components I didn't want to get rid of plus things I wanted to try.Sota Cosmos, SME V, Lyra ClavitsCJ Premier 15 phono, Bryston BP17 preamp, Classe DR3 VHC, Martin Logan CLS.
Getting The Most Out Of A Koetsu Urushi
I agree that the SME V arm is magic with the Urushi and that's what I use, into a Vendetta phono stage. No transformers needed.  I have also used it with a Conrad Johnson Premier 15 which also had ample gain.Other arms that might be worth trying i...
My apologies_Upgrade path from Wilson WattPuppy 7's?
Why do you feel the Maxx 3 are too much for your room?  I run Maxx 2 and they are excellent al low volume or high and they are quite efficient - I am currently driving them with 70 tube watts
@inna Tell me your speakers and I'll tell you who you are
Vandersteen 4A - because they were one of the best all round performers back in the late 80s /early 90s despite the tri wire/biamping complexityMartin Logan (original) CLS - because the mid range is sooo perfect on acoustic material - jazz, classi...
$3,000 Planar Speakers
Apogee’s require an amp with some serious current delivery, and the ability to drive a 1 ohm load. Only early models like the Scintilla were serious 1 ohm loads. Later ones tended to be more like  manageable 3 or so.I wouldn't try to pair th w...
Speaker Placement - When it's perfect!
Wow. The Spica Angelus. Haven’t thought about that speaker for a long time. That was, to me, one of the most unique looking speakers in its time. I never had the pleasure of hearing music through them.Agree with you about the differing demands of...
On/Off Switch
Power conditioning?  Yeah it works (and has more effect with some components that others).Power cords? Not so muchPower switches - not much effect at all so long as they make a good solid contact. And I'd add to that, that they must be up to the jo...
Come on people....BASS!
Part of the problem is that texting teaches bad habits, and another part is the reliance on spell checking software and simply accepting that it will know best which homonym you would want to use without you having to think about it.When legal mat...
Speaker Placement - When it's perfect!
Some speakers are more demanding than others.I recall setting up some Spica Angelus - they were capable of pin point localization but needed to be positioned exactly right to get that.  Helps to have someone to help you - if you can just sit there...
Switching from solid state to tubes
I ran my home theatre for awhile with my main system tube amp (CJ Premier 11a, 70 wpc) and it runs my 4 ohm 92 dB efficient speakers with no problem, but I eventually decided that I didn't want to use up hard to replace tubes with video so added a...
What 2 channel Amp would you Buy for $6k?
If you can have anything, I'd definitely opt for  Classe DR3 VHC. They only made around 180 of them and they're hard to find, but usually go for c. $3K unserviced and $5K serviced. They will run absolutely any speaker ever made, including 1 ohm spe...
Benefits of an external DAC
I have become convinced that all of the difference in sound between DACs is usually a result of differences in the analogue domain after the D/A conversion takes place. We did a comparison awhile ago in my main system, which is very good for analyt...
Power Cords
Power cords need to do two thing - supply enough current to th component and not pick up any noise/hash while doing that.I've always thought that the component that shows the most effect from different power cords is the power amp, and that how mu...
Koetsu cartridges - what arms work?
Urushi here (original Sugano Sr.) and the SME V seems made for it.
What makes you build a system around an amplifier?
I don't get the concept of building 'around' a specific component..We all have some sort of starting system that usually is assembled by a combination of what we can afford at the time, what advice we get from friends and magazines and what we hap...
