The Absolute Sound vs Stereophile
I used to take both but did not renew either starting around 2003. They had both become less and less relevant to my interests, which were primarily the music, not the gear.Friends loan me issues from time to time and nothing I have seen makes me ...
Interesting video with Richard Vandersteen talking about his subs
Thanks for the reference to that interview - hadn't seen it before.RV worked out his theory on a model you rarely hear about, in the 1980s - the Vandersteen 4 and later 4A (which as a significant improvement over the 4).  Didn't make many - someth...
Bryston preamps
I run a BP17 in my 2nd system and I do it with a tube phono stage (CJ Premier 15) and have no issues ( I use a step up transformer for gain). The BP17 is dead quiet at all gain settings and is a good sounding preamp
Outer ring - who uses and what are your findings
I have two systems of hold downs in my tables, one a screw on clamp on the TNT - I've avoided trying a periphery ring on that table as I believe it requires a change in platter and a $2,000 bill that probably isn't warranted by any benefit in soun...
Good carts with SME V
wspohn – which Koetsu worked best in the SME V? I was not a fan of the Black. I have been running a vintage original  Sugano made Urushi for years. While I could have bought one of the follow-ups (the fancy stone bodied ones) I usually bought a...
I am TORN between Tube power amp and SS power amp.
I run both a solid state phono stage generally viewed as one of the best ever made, and a tube phono stage (CJ Premier 15).  Both give satisfaction.Suggest that you seek out a good sounding phono stage and not worry about what the internals are.
Who said “ flat freq response “ is the best?
The performance space affects the sound on the way to the recorder. Your room affects the sound that comes to your ears.Having amplification that has an output that is exactly the same as the input except for variable volume, just gives you the ch...
CDs Vs LPs
Meaningless question - you can’t generalize. On some albums vinyl sounds better on some digital, and there can be a half dozen or more remasterings in either, any of which can sound great or crappy, depending on what they started with and what they...
Are there any Delphi Oracle Users Who Can Comment
The Oracle is beautiful in a way that few other tables are - that gets it a lot of customers as long as the sound is at least decent, which it was.I had a Delphi 2 so can't comment on how the latest version, but it seems to impress the reviewers.I...
Tonearm comparison, Rega vs Zeta, anyone?
I've tried the Rega, Mission Mechanic and Zeta, the latter on an Oracle Delphi Mk 2.  Surprised at all the dislike for the RB300 - it is still a bargain, sonically, but the Zeta is a work of art that should handily better it, They are rare, so fin...
Good carts with SME V
I have had excellent luck with both the Koetsus (Urushi in y case) and a Lyra Clavis.  I still have both running in SMEVs in my systems.Ask Jonathan Carr at Lyra what current cartridges he thinks best suit the arm.
New D'Agostino Monoblocks...$250,000
Sounds like just the amp you need when you buy those 70 dB efficient speakers you've been wanting....
price of Oppo players threw the roof
Never understood people with no concept of free market economy.  There is no moral obligation on the part of a seller to be a nice guy and sell for less than the going price for any item - his goal is to get as much as the market will bear, end of...
Surprised
Good bass is possible at acceptable cost if you look to heritage speakers.I still use some late 1980s Vandersteen 4As in one of my rooms. They were built in small numbers at much higher price in between filling all the orders for the 2Cs and they ...
Surprised
Integration is always at least a possible issue with subs. Many are very flexible and easy to integrate like the REL, Vandersteen, and Hsu, but many are not. Most subs aren't for really low bass, they are for bass from about 60 Hz and down and I've...
