If your not watching the series Sounbreaking you should be I watched the first one--good enough to make me want watch more, but so far just "pretty good." There's not much more to say about this stuff and few tidbits you haven't picked up somewhere before but it beats hearing about politics.
Ry Cooder recommendation... Into the Purple Valley and Chicken Skin Music Live (esp. the latter, where he plays nothing but his Stratocaster with some excellent slide work).
Why pay so much for super high end? Skilled engineers with a penchant for audio spend lots of time and money doing research and development to deliver a product that few among us can approach with a DIY method. Of the available gear we choose the ones which work for our ears and ou...
Your Go to CD to Impress I once made a mix CD for my wife which turned out to have some great tracks for auditioning speakers. Some of the better ones:Sweet Dreams--Patsy Cline (amazing arrangement/production)Here in the Dark--Taj MahalSave the Last Dance for Me--Aaron N...
Mose Allison It's interesting to me that British bands did some pretty slamming covers of his material--I'm thinking of The Yardbirds' "I'm Not Talking" and the Who's "Young Man Blues." Both are a far cry from the original sound of Mose at the piano.
Worst record ever? "Indiana Wants Me, Lord I Can't Go Back There" by an artist whose name I cannot remember. Absolutely the worst. "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks was also pretty bad. Both are Top 40 hits, circa 1971. I remember Ry's "Bop Till You Drop"--the...
List of albums that will still be popular 50 years from now... Pt. II--If the best known stuff is still heard and appreciated then the question becomes: which of the lesser stuff survives--the Pixies? Screaming Jay Hawkins? Blues Magoos? Jan and Dean? We can't know. You have piqued my curiosity about s...
List of albums that will still be popular 50 years from now... I've been teaching pop music on guitar (and other instruments) for over thirty years and I'm amazed that "our" music survived the generation flip. It boggles my mind that I'm still showing kids how to play Beatles, Cream, Hendrix, etc. The music...
Rolling Stones Mono Box Set (lp or cd) Geoffkait, I no longer own a vinyl copy of Sticky Fingers (I think mine was stolen in '75) so I compared standard issue CD's --I felt it wouldn't be fair to used the remastered Abbey Road or to compare CD to LP.
Rolling Stones Mono Box Set (lp or cd) geoffkait, I couldn't disagree more. I just compared tracks on Abbey Road and Sticky Fingers. I don't find Abbey Road lacking in any way, whereas the voices and acoustic guitars on Sticky Fingers sound wrongly EQ'ed and the bass guitar is someti...
Dylan wins Nobel Prize in Literature bdp24, I remember that Grammy speech. I was watching him and I was thinking he was too far gone to even say something coherent. Then he sucker-punched me and knocked me out. It was a tremendous performance. Did no one check out the "Last Thoug...
Dylan wins Nobel Prize in Literature I'll be the first to admit that I'm not well-versed in either prose or poetry. But I have noticed that Salman Rushdie and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, among others, are pretty pleased that Dylan was chosen. But I'm sure Simao knows better...
Rolling Stones Mono Box Set (lp or cd) I appreciate Ian's (who was an original member of the Stones) contributions as well as Nicky's (who was so good in the first Jeff Beck group)--but they don't start to compare to the difference in sound that George Martin made. The Stones' longevi...
Rolling Stones Mono Box Set (lp or cd) The sound of most 60's British band recordings sucks IMO. It improved as the years went by. The Beatles had the best of everything, even a producer who had experience recording classical ensembles. I tend to think it was more the ear of the pro...
Dylan wins Nobel Prize in Literature I'm pretty sure it's for his lyrics, not his music or his books. |
