Your Best Hobbies (other than Audio)
as many know, a wif & a 9 & 5 year-old child tend to take up a lot of time! :>) *other* hobbies i have are cars - currently italian - mostly alfas, plus a pantera, cuz i cant afford a ferrari or lotus v-8. machine-wise, i also love my b...
REGA-VPI JR- LINN- OR ? UNDER $800
hi musikdok,i recently replaced my sumiko premiere ft-3 tonearm w/something a bit more modern, but a steal at the price, imho - an origin-live modified rega rb-250 this mod replaces the internal wiring, and also does structural mods. there is also...
"Sizzling" tweeters at high volume?
the focal inverted titanium tweets should be a drop-in replacement - these tweets are what's in my meret re's, & i get no ringing, even at "head-banger" volume levels in a ~25x38 listening room... there was a cheap pair here f/s on audiogon la...
More power "better"
hi alun,i tink class-a amps *do* sound more powerful than comparably-rated non-class-a amps - prolly because they put out more current. the proacs would definitely like more power, tho what ya got should be sufficient in a smaller room. the least ...
REGA-VPI JR- LINN- OR ? UNDER $800
musikdok is right that the oracle, w/its three springs, requires adjustment at initial set-up. but, it's not hard, & it stays adjusted once set-up. also, easy to check, w/a built-in bubble level on the suspended subchassis.one of the things or...
need reasonable preamp w/headphone
melos sha-1, ~$400 used; melos sha-gold/maestro,
Tinnitus anyone?
subaruguru, dunno if it'll help yer tinnitus, but adding a humidifier to our hvac system made a great improvement to the air-quality in our house - more even temperatures, less sinus congestion, less dry throat, les static when touching the electro...
Electrocompaniet A100
phil, if i could find an aw75dmb in singapore, i'd be happy to buy it! ;~) electro stuff seems to be more popular in europe & asia than the usa, so ewe should be able to find one if yer really innerested. i like electro stuff a lot...regards, ...
B&W N804 System Upgrade - Cary CD?
get a nice tubed pre - for the money, it's the most cost-effective way to get good digital sound. a great pre & a $500 cd player will beat a great cd player run straight-in, everyday, imho, even if the cd-player was designed to be run straight...
Matching pre amp tubes?
poulkirk, i paid less than $2k for a nice used tubed preamp. i can't think of anything solid-state anywhere near the price, even used, that would come close to it. the linn kairn solid-state pre i was using before - a wery nice pre for the price, ...
Amplifiers for ProAcs
proac recommends audio research ls-16 or ls-25 (w/a-r 100.2 amps). as both of these preamps allow a default pass-thru setting for a h-t processor to control all the speakers, i'd definitely do that...
Speaker Suggestions?/Advice Needed.
nomad, proac or dynaudio will give a far more detailed sound than the vandy's or meadowlarks (or even than the totems, imo) - i'd try that, as an alternative before ya commit... but, running yer cd's straight-in may make a truely detailed speaker ...
Wanted: Exceptional preamp w/remote
for $2k used, the melos ma-333 or music director is really nice - remote operates only the balance & volume, tho...regarding the creek remote add-on, several years ago, i called audio-advisor ready to order one to go w/my electrocompaniet ec-1...
REGA-VPI JR- LINN- OR ? UNDER $800
wait for an oracle. i got my perfect-condition mk-l for $850, & this included a decent grace tonearm, & shipping from canada to maryland. of course, i now have ~$2k into it w/gnu tonearm, power-supply, & mk-v upgrades... ;~) but, ya do...
Rock and Roll Snobbery
ben, this *one* cd, by a reknowned rock legend, is the only one i know about that seems to fit the model of what's being released to appeal to the *gen-x* crowd. not much new pop-music interests me, so i can't say i know one way or the other, whet...
