"Krell" is a buzzword
hi cornfedboy,my alfas have been no more unreliable than any other cars i've owned, which have included toyota, datsun, volvo, suzuki, to name a few. they are a lot *more* reliable than the bmw's my friend has owned over the past 15 years... ;~) doug
VMPS Subwoofers--Opinions
i agree w/sean - let your ears be the judge. i am not knocking rel or the other powered subs out there, i yust think they are not cost effective - it's more expensive to get accurate, undistorted, deep bass out of a smaller box than it is to do it...
The best Cdp that have volume control
the res-audio cd50 *is* an outstanding cd-player, & can be had used for ~$1700. i finally had the opportunity to hear it on my brother-in-law's system, run thru an audio research ls-16 preamp, feeding an a-r 100.2 amp, driving proac 2.5's. i d...
Tube Preamp Recommendations
hi dekay, yes, it seems that there *was* a dumb assembly mistake that caused the problem - a clip holding the innards to one of the volume pots came loose, causing one channel not to work. i knew the electronics were ok, because i drive a second sy...
Tube Preamp Recommendations
melos sha-gold or sha-maestro in that price range. no fono-stage, but remote control volume & balance. also, one of the best headfone amps extant, if yer into that...doug
"Krell" is a buzzword
alas, redkiwi, fiat, in all their wisdom, feels north america is not worthy of the latest italian iron. (except ferrari, go figure...) but, i strongly prefer rwd - my one fwd alfa, the 164 (fiat's influence), was purchased only because they are aw...
VMPS Subwoofers--Opinions
i have a pair of the vmps larger subs, crossed over w/a deluxe version of marchand's xm9 active x-over, and the sound is *anything* but that described by sean. i wouldn't trade my current sub set-up straight across for any pair of velodyne, rel, m...
Best Turntable at $1,500? Please Advise.
rega & basis 'tables are excellent, but for the money i don't think they can compare w/a similarly priced used sota or oracle - yust my humble opinion.doug
"Krell" is a buzzword
hey jim, we can run but we can't hide, eh? :>) yule love that 3.0 in a gtwe6 - it works wonders in mine! ;~)gino, better sign up to the alfa-digest if ya haven't already done so - it's a wealth of infook, here's minimal audio content: my daily ...
Thanks for advice on smooth amp!
i'm warning ewe - if ewe can only afford *one* gnu piece of gear, get a tubed pre & use yer existing digital front-end - best sound for the money, in yer situation! ;~)good luck, doug
Odyssey Audio Stratos vs Nad s200
proac recommends the audio research 100.2 amp w/the audio research ls-16 preamp, or the ls-25 preamp. i've heard the 2.5's w/the 100.2/ls-16 combo - *excellent*!doug
Best Turntable at $1,500? Please Advise.
by bibto's table, ewe won't regret it! i got a similar deal on a mint oracle, then had it upgraded to their latest mk-v specs for not too much more. of course, i was lucky to buy it from a dealer in quebec, which is right across-town from oracle's...

hey redkiwi, as an owner of 3 alfas, yer a man i can really respect! :>)regards, doug
The best Cdp that have volume control
whatever cd-player ewe currently have, will sound better run thru a nice tubed preamp, if yer budget can go up to $2k, than whatever $2k cd player ewe can find that can be run straight-in to an amp. try used melos, cary, rogue, audio-research prea...
Help me find a smooth solid-state amp?
above responses to check out sam tellig's article in the dec s'phile are good - he also liked the mccormack & the musical fidelity amp, but from what he said, i don't think the m/f would be a good match for you. prolly would be better off gett...
