What cartridge to use on the VPI Scoutmaster?
My local VPI dealer has several different cartridges that he uses on the Scoutmaster demo in his store: Shelter 501; Grado Reference; and the DynaVector Karat that sells for about $750 (can't think of model name -- maybe the 17D?).
Headphone connect direct to Amp
Several models of Stax electret and electrostatic headphones connected to the speaker posts on the amp. I don't know if Stax headphones are still being made, but I have a 20-year old pair of Stax electrostatics that I still use and enjoy very much.
VPI periphery record ring for VPI Scoutmaster
It does make a difference, particularly with records that are not perfectly flat -- but whether it's worth $500 is a judgement call. While I love VPI's products, I personally think the clamping ring is grossly overpriced, despite being made of sta...
Vandersteen Sub not enought punch???
Your V2W may be operating out-of-phase with the main speakers. Try reversing the leads and see what happens. If that doesn't result in better bass response, then contact your local Vandersteen dealer (rather than call Vandersteen Audio -- Richard ...
Which Tube Preamp under $10K?
Take a look at the Aesthetix Calypso line stage and its companion phono stage, the Aesthetix Rhea. Really a wonderful combination for about $7k for the pair. If you prefer a single chassis, then these two units are available as the Aesthetix Janus...

Universal Players: Video Quality?
I bought a Denon DVD-3910 about 6 months ago, and have been very pleased with both the video and audio quality. "The Perfect Sound" magazine is also very high on the Denon 2910.
Rarest Brands for Sale on 'Gon
Hi, Nrchy:Stan Klyne lives in the Seattle area, so local audiophiles are perhaps more aware of his designs than other parts of the country. Tim Ratcliffe, owner of Experience Audio here in Seattle, carries Klyne products, and he recently told me t...

which power amp for KEF and Bryston preamp
There is a Bryston 4B-ST currently for sale here on A-gon. I have been using this amp for about 5 years, and have been extremely pleased with it. There is also a Bryston 8B-ST in the "For Sale" listings (it's essentially a 4-channel version of the...
Soundproof Windows
About two years, I had new Milgard vinyl windows (double-pane, filled with argon gas) installed in my home, and was surprised and pleased by how much they reduced noise from outside. There are many other manufacturers around the country, and I'm s...
grado cartrige question
It's hard to know exactly which Grado cartridge you have, since the exterior appearances changed over time. But since the cartridge body is not wood, it is safe to say that you have one of the models that make up the entry-level group that Grado c...

Bryston Power Amp users - what power cord?
Shortly after I bought my Bryston amps several years ago, I bought some AudioQuest power cords that were on sale at HCM Audio (regularly $120 each, on sale for $49). To be frank, I couldn't tell any difference between the AQ's and the stock power ...
