Monty Alexander lp recommendations
Another vote for Ivory and Steel. Lots of fun! I heard Monty Alexander about 20 years ago in a small club with no more than 40 people present. He puts on a great performance!
Buying a used cartridge...tell us your tale.
I bought a Benz LP that was described by the seller as "nearly new, not even fully broken in." I was skeptical but it turned out to be 100% true. From the other side of the table, I can vouch for the several used cartridges I have sold. They were ...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Jet, I believe we are talking about the same thing when you say the CAST caps sound "dark" and I say they are "a bit lacking in air and high-frequency extension." I could hear this when I put the first one in but it became more of a problem when I...

Good idea Grannyring! Everything will be truly "warmed" up.
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
Interesting Jet! It does appear that my reactions to V-Caps vs. Duelunds are a minority view, but I can live with that. It won't be the first time! My system may need some extra zing in the HFs or maybe it's my 62-year old ears. In any case, I agr...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
To my ears, the CAST caps are all a bit lacking in air and high-frequency extension. I posted that several months ago in this thread and I still feel that way. That is true of the 100v pancake CAST caps as well as the high-voltage cylindrical CAST...
Capacitor log Mundorf Silver in Oil
I know this thread is mostly about capacitors in speaker crossovers but there have also been a number of comments about caps in electronics. For the past year I have been using a 1uf Duelund CAST as the output coupler for my phono preamp. Prior to...
Devore or Harbeths to replace my ESL63s?
I too would appreciate reading a follow-up after you've lived with the 30.1's for a while. I read a blog a few months ago by a guy who has both ESL-57's and 30.1's, and as I recall he occasionally swaps them back and forth but overall prefers the ...
Classe CA-201 Issue
I had a Classe CA-300 a while back and I had the flashing green light a few times including at turnon. It turned out this was due to some low-frequency pulses produced by the preamp while it was warming up. It would be easy to find out if your pre...
I can't get a wood bodied Benz anymore
I had SoundSmith do a "re-tip only" on my Benz LP and I think it sounds the same as it did prior to the retipping, just with a whole lot better tracking since the stylus tip is no longer worn. The retipping didn't take all that long, maybe 6 weeks...
Seems like the best "upgrade" for tube amps....
Someone once said something along these lines: The sound quality of a given component is 75% due to the circuit design, i.e. the engineering, 75% due to component part selection, and 50% due to build quality.I like this not just because it's funny...
Seems like the best "upgrade" for tube amps....
That's good to hear about KT-120s. I have been using my pair for over a year so maybe I have a few more years to go. Mine are run pretty conservatively----500v and 65ma---so that should help.By the way, I don't see any point in waiting very long b...
Seems like the best "upgrade" for tube amps....
I have noticed the same thing with my tube amps, both my flea-powered 46 SE amps and my 50W PP amps. After 2 hours or so, I can hear greater detail and the soundstage has more of a see-through transparency. It's not a night-and-day kind of thing, ...
Devore or Harbeths to replace my ESL63s?
Andrew,I have heard AN-E speakers numerous times at a nearby dealer. At various times he's had the hemp woofer model, a less expensive version, and a ridiculously expensive version with outboard crossovers and silver wiring. I didn't keep track of...
Devore or Harbeths to replace my ESL63s?
The AN E speakers have a discontinuity between the drivers that I find annoying and distracting. It's a shame because they have many other very nice qualities. I've noticed that some people are bothered by the discontinuity and others are not. Thi...
