Capital Audio Fest 2016
There were many very nice sounding rooms at this year's CAF.  That makes 2 for 2 at the new venue, and considering that the sound quality for the several years previous was not as so uniformly good I have to conclude that the new quarters must hav...
How long do high quality speakers "last"
7 years is just barely broken in!  Seriously, unless your drivers have foam surrounds, speakers should last a long, long time.  My Spendors have 15 years and should continue for many more.  The vintage drivers in my high-efficiency speakers date f...
Ideas on table/arm combo for Miyajima mono cart
I agree with Darkmatters about the Schick.  I owned one for a few years and tried it with a number of cartridges and headshells.  Despite all the hoopla the Schick just doesn't sound all that good.  I replaced mine with an Analog Instruments Siggw...
Audio Note Phono stages
A couple points.  First, Audio Note Kits are not the same as Audio Note (UK).  Despite some obvious similarities in both circuit design and parts quality, the final voicing of ANK kits is unique to ANK.  Second, ANK recently revised the L3 phono k...
Your single favorite component
No.1 would be my DIY speakers which are similar to Western Electric 753 monitors from the 1940s but use an Altec compression driver on the 32A horn.  Details are on my system page.No.2 would be my Emotive Audio Vita power amps.  I have had them fo...
What happened to the "club atmosphere" of Audiogon?
Lots of good observations in this thread.  Yes, the old sense of community at Audiogon has changed, and not for the better.  Yes, the hobbyist orientation of the Audiogon ads has changed so that today a high percentage are dealers.  Yes, there are...
Curious .. What is the compared price of your tt vs spkrs
Details are on my system page. Basically the LP setup is Galibier Gavia, Triplanar and Siggwan arms, Benz and Denon carts.  Commercial speakers are Spendor SP-100.
Curious .. What is the compared price of your tt vs spkrs
Here's a different perspective.  My turntable setup has a MSRP of $30,500.  This includes one table, two arms and two cartridges.  My two pairs of speakers are harder to calculate but I paid a total of $5650.  The speakers include a DIY unit so th...
Discovery Cables Plus Four vs Essence: Is there an audible difference?
I recently added a Plus 4 phono cable and I have some 12" lengths of Plus 4 inside my power amps connecting the input jacks to the first tube.  I have been very impressed with the sound of Plus 4 particularly the smooth, even tonal balance.  It ha...
Phono cable question !!!
I can recommend Joe DePhillips of Discovery Cable.  He makes some excellent phono cables.  In fact, his wiring is used in the Triplanar and Durand tonearms among others.  He also can rewire an existing arm with one of his harnesses, and he is prom...
John Martyn
"Solid Air" is my only John Martyn record but it is not only great musically but sonically as well.  Listening to the title track on a really good system (ok, my system), when the sax comes in I nearly jump out of my seat it is so spookily real.  ...
Searching for the ideal vintage bookshelf speakers.
I totally understand the interest in vintage speakers.  All of the speakers in my house could be called vintage---homemade speakers with Jensen and Altec drivers, Spendor SP-100s, Fulton FMI-80s, and Dyna A25s.  Based on your criteria including th...
6sn7 or 6sl7
Make that Brimar, not Brimsr.
6sn7 or 6sl7
And I should also mention another favorite 6SL7 variant---Brimsr CV1985.  In the right application it too is superb: fast, airy and detailed and very deep tight bass.  A little hard to find but worth grabbing when you see one.  A real workhorse too.
6sn7 or 6sl7
There are so many varieties of 6SL7 and 6SN7 tubes available that it is hard to generalize.  But one thing I would say is certain: for a hobbyist, as opposed to a manufacturer, use only vintage Old Stock.  Why bother with modern reissues when supe...
