Curse you Dynaflex We called 'em "Dyna-Flaps." The "excuse" given by RCA at the time of their introduction - circa 1970 - had to do with oil prices/need to conserve oil. In addition to being flimsy, they were prone to other pressing defects, like "bubbles" which, if...
Longest continuous playing songs Not sure if this is a "song" by your definition, but Morton Feldman's *Piano and String Quartet* is one movement and goes on for about 70 minutes or so.
Record Cleaning Machines: Hannl or Typhoon My Loricraft is so quiet you can listen to music/TV or have a conversation while you're cleaning. It replaced a Nitty Gritty 2.5, which was quite loud and ran pretty hot after 5 or 6 sides - the Loricraft runs very cool - - - literally for hours, ...
The most haunting music you ever heard? Morton Feldman's *Piano and String Quartet* with the Kronos String Quartet on Nonesuch (CD only).
Blue Note 45rpm reissue I agree that the first two installments are superb - - - particularly the Horace Parlan. I subscribe directly from Music Matters and got an email confirmation yesterday that the next two sets are on their way - -- due here next Thursday. Eagerly a...
What is Your Favorite Mile Davis Set on Mosaic? I own all of the Mosaic-Davis LP sets, and I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. (Got many of them on CD, too) Of the ones you listed, I prefer the Miles Davis/Coltrane set - hands down. You didn't list it, but really like the Davis/Gil...
Frank Sinatra Capitol Years Lps vs CDs etc. Tagyerit is right - if the records are in great shape, you got a wonderful buy. One of the pluses of this set is the wealth of information in the liner notes. In addition to info on recording dates, a list of orchestral personnel is provided. Unt...
Frank Sinatra Capitol Years Lps vs CDs etc. I bought the Mobile Fidelity Sinatra LP box set (used on eBay) last summer. The recordings are all from Capitol and the era you mentioned. The quality of the transfers/pressings is phenomenal - - you must hear it to believe it.
High level MC or step up? I'd go with a step up tranny - get a quality one, like the AudioNote AN-S2. Used ones have turned up here on A'gon from time to time.
Tube CD Players other than Jolida I've owned an Eastern Electric Minimax for about 18 months. Tube rolling in this machine is a breeze, if that's what you're looking for. Put some NOS 60's vintage Mullards in mine and have been very, very pleased with the sound.
Buying from Canada a hassle for you too? I've had several successful experiences purchasing from Canadian members - both here and on eBay. Postal charges are higher for LP shipments (or so it seems to me), and the Canadian postal system is a bit slow - at least to Texas - but these are s...
Chamber Music - your best pick. Have you tried Bartok yet? His six quartets are superb. There are many fine readings available - Julliard, Tokyo and Emerson - but my favorite is the Tatrai Quartet. I've got it on vinyl (Hungaraton) - don't know if it was issued on CD.
Please suggest serene, restful jazz recordings Kind of Blue - Miles Davis. Superb.
vinyl storage????? Go to: rackittm.comA bit pricey, but excellent quality and expandability.
Cartridge for Graham 1.5 I've got a Graham 2.1 with a Helikon mono cartridge (on a Sota Sapphire tt). Great synergy - - wouidn't expect any less from a 2.1/stereo Helikon match. |
