beethoven string quartets I agree with Swklein that the Vegh is the set to have - - although the sound on my vinyl copy is decidedly not dry - - Another great set from the 60's is by the Guarneri SQ.
What was your first music that you paid for? 1962 - joined the Columbia Record Club and got a mono recording of Isaac Stern doing Haydn and Mozart violin concerti. Still have that record . . . . It was the start of a very long love affair with recorded classical music - - - -and it's still g...

What tonearms $1500 work well with the Linn? I agree completely with Johnnantais assessment of the Linn/Aro combo: about 2 1/2 years ago I put an Aro on my 20-year old Linn, and I've been very, very happy with it. Single most significant upgrade I have made since I bought the Linn LP-12 in '...
XM, Serius -- Quality Sound? Can't commnet on XM, but I've had Sirius in my car since last March. (I'm pretty sure the sound of the two services is comparable, since the technology is similar, if not the same.) Sirius is great. You either get the signal - very clear, no stati...
How long should vinyl last? My experience is similar to Jependlton's: I've got scores of LPs that I bought new in the 60's and 70's that still sound great. I also recommend use of a wet-vac cleaning machine and a carbon fiber brush before *and* after each play.
Do I need a machine to clean ? Phoutin - over the past few months on average I've been cleaning about 10 LPs per week. I last changed the vac-sweep pad about two months ago, and it's time again. So - - figure a pad lasts 75 cleanings or thereabouts. The pads come in packs of fo...
Do I need a machine to clean ? Phoutin - the Nitty Gritty machine requires very little maintenance. Mine has an automatic fluid dispenser, but I don't use it. I keep a plastic, six ounce container next to the machine and just squirt a little bit of cleaning fluid on the cleanin...
Do I need a machine to clean ? Phoutin - I generally clean only one LP at a time on the Nitty Gritty. The whole process takes less than a minute, which is the beauty of these machines. Sometimes I clean several LPs at a time, but the machine tends to heat up a bit if used for m...
Do I need a machine to clean ? The main benefit of a Nitty Gritty, VPI, SOTA or similar device is speed: I can clean an LP on my Nitty Gritty 2.5 in about 40 seconds. I do use Disc Doctor in really stubborn cases, and it works quite well - (although I still use the NG to vac-of...
Need advice re: Purchase of Reel to Reel For some basic, quite good information, check out Rolf's site: http://www.angelfire.com/electronic2/vintagetx/He really knows his stuff and helped me get an old Akai 4000DS going.
Recommendation - Complete Beethoven Sonatas I agree that the Goode set is excellent. On vinyl, I really enjoy Claudio Arrau's performances (don't know if they have been reissued on CD). Also on vinyl, I've got a few of Ivan Moravec's performances - - - sublime!

Arvo Pärt I concur with Rushton's and Tora's recommendations of Part on ECM - - wonderful recordings, all! |
