Tube Preamp Question Yes, I have noticed that with tube preamps you get great depth but ss preamps can have a wider soundstage. Tube rolling will help a bit in this regard.
Speaker setup experts please? Here is a very simple rule that works well for a good tonal balance (for me anyway).Measure these three dimensions: distance from the side walls, distance from the wall behind speakers and the distance of the center point of the woofers to the flo...
Is there a killer preamp for 1500? The AI MOD preamp I had was very high gain, 30db so keep that in mind if your amp has 1v sensitivity. I couldn't live with the gain issue, very little volume control and tube noise was easily heard with 89db speakers.
Best sounding CD player for under $500? Get a Sony 9100es or the older 999es which to me sound better than most of the players mentioned above. Yes, I have used most of the ones mentioned, not heard the MF 3.2.
NAD C372 & Gallo Ref 3.1 Riley, before you preach any further, the C372 is an integrated and not a receiver. It is superb at it's price point. Katee, yes it will be more than adequate. 150 watts with lots of headroom, I see no issues.
Universal players as a transport Get a Sony 999es or 9100es as a transport. They are solidly built. The Oppo players are so flimsy in comparison, you will have no vibration isolation.
speakers for classical music Try one of the Focal speakers in their current line-up. Their new tweeter and midrange are very clean and grain free. No more anguish while listening to massed strings, majority of my cds are listenable now.
Quicksilver and 6SN7 pre The red base ones are a bit overrated for sound. People like them because they are so ruggedly built. There are equally good options at a fraction of the cost. Take it from a guy that has had over 20 different brands/types in various preamps:)
Quicksilver and 6SN7 pre kt88, I had a Belles 20A for a while and it is a bit dark sounding, more so with some NOS tubes like RCA blackplates. The pre just lack the top end sparkle imo. I have also had various 6sn7 preamps because I like this tube, big open sound. The AES...
Audio refinement complete? From what I read the 201 is not much of an upgrade, probably not worth paying 2x the amount. You could buy the Arcam A85 I have for sale here (shameless plug) and it would be a step up from the complete:)
Audio refinement complete? You could try a Nad c352 or 355 Bee with one of their cdps. Nad amps are very warm with a clean mids and highs and you get a little more juice.
Cambridge 840c or Pioneer PD-65/Benchmark DAC 1 Neither, get a used Bel Canto DAC2 for your PD-65. If you want a real bargain try the Keces dac sold here for $350 with the opamp upgrade.
Does anyone out there NOT hear a difference in CD Fruff, I have mentioned this a few times before in other posts, the differences in digital under $1500 are subtle at best. To give you an idea, moving the speakers 6 inches in any direction changes the sound to a much much larger extent than switc...
Integrated amps on a 1,000 dollar budget You can get a new jolida 1501 or NAD C372, warm and musical. |
