ebay vs audiogon
No matter where you trade it takes some common sense to trade happily. Hobbyists can be identified easily on either site.Audiogon has auctions but most of the good things I see have reserves. To me, reserve spells non-serious seller. Guessing game...
Need a dummy crash course on soldering fem.RCAs
Here are some general tips and tricks:Pick your solder. Ordinary electrical rosin core solder is a mixture of tin and lead, called 60/40 because it's 60% tin. Silver bearing solder adds some silver to the mix. Radio Shack has 62/36/2 which is 2% s...
Almighty TT hum --- help
The plot thickens; sorry I misunderstood what you meant :^)Let's assume the hum is the sound of 60Hz house current. Connect the TT to the phono input on the NAD then unplug the TT from the wall. Without its power source I doubt the TT can induce t...
Almighty TT hum --- help
While my TT was humming one channel, leaving the interconnects hooked up but unplugging the TT from the wall made it go away. Replacing the TT's worn RCA females didn't help. Renewing the interconnects did. Since you've got hum on any source it so...
Almighty TT hum --- help
My old time TT went humming in one channel a while back and it turned out to be defective interconnects. If your hum is in both channels your problem likely lies elsewhere.
What is " lowball"
Mthieme,Conventional wisdom suggests that while considering offers and counteroffers the seller has a reasonable time to respond. To avoid tying up your dough waiting on that open ended response, nail it down by providing a time limit in your offe...
Foreign language songs/music
Enjoying what we don't understand is normal. The fair sex, deities, and Mick Jagger's early vocals come immediately to mind. More seriously, better audio examples I enjoy are folk music from Scandinavia and Africa, and medieval choral music sung i...
Home Spindle Lube Test
This morning I reclocked the performance to see how it's doing. Over the last 60 days I've remounted the platter at least twice to move the TT but have not cleaned the bearing or relubed it. Completely uncontrolled and non-scientific I admit, but ...
Home Spindle Lube Test
Sean - I would imagine the slipperiest substance would have a tough time adhering to anything.Bob - Seems to me the duration of spin following shut off is at least one indicator of the amount of friction involved, and thus some measure of the enha...

Power cord to add ease and tame treble.
A recent posting regarding speaker toe-in reminded me that an easy way to tame a hot treble is to use less toe. The apparent reason: a tweeter's response declines as you move off its direct axis. A freebie tweak! Try it and see.
Could someone explain quality sound in preamps?
Thinking back over the preamps I've had, the main terms that come to mind are: noisy (controls on Dynaco PAT4); blurry (SAE MkIII & P102); dark (bass on Forte F44); natural (Threshold FET ten/hl); and fast (Threshold FET nine/e). In fairness, ...
Speaker toe-in & stereo imaging
When I ran Uni-Q equipped KEF's, zero toe-in provided locked in, pinpoint imaging across and within the soundstage. Watching the KEF's images was almost as much fun as listening! Toed in, the KEF's treble seemed a little too much in my face.
Silly Question...does a transport have a "sound" ?
Regarding the "no physical reason" argument, a short story:Alfred Einstein liked his pipe. One time he digs into his pocket and displays a wooden kitchen match. He shows it around and asks everyone to describe it. The listeners note it has mass, m...
Silly Question...does a transport have a "sound" ?
Bits may be bits but once you admit that their sequence requires very precise timing you may have to swallow the sad fact that no clock is perfect. This means clocking, moving and reclocking digital signals is imperfect too. Dig deep to consider t...
