Ferrite beads/clamps as a tweak?
FWIW, on my Threshold FET nine/e preamp, circa 1992, the phono inputs use ferrite chokes. They are on the wires inside of the case, between the RCA jacks and the circuit board.
Which is better - S/PDIF Coaxial or AES/EBU
In your situation, cobbling together BNC with RCA sounds nastier than taking advantage of the shared AES/EBU connections. Some say 75 Ohm coax is more dynamic, 110 Ohm AES/EBU more airy. Research here on Audiogon and you'll find the ideal length f...
Can HI FI components really make music?
Music contains expressive qualities that come through no matter what gear you listen through. My $11 Aiwa FM clock radio blasts golden oldies in the kitchen. A $68 Sony CD/Cassette/FM radio combo boombox, complete with headphone jack and digital c...
Cartridge choice? Shure M97Xe, Ortofon 20, Empire
The Shure offers solid punch and ought to give you more output. The Ortofon offers more refinement. In a nutshell, if you're already driving bass heavy speakers or large woofers the Ortofon will keep things neat and clean. If you've got bass limit...
Amplifier maintenance for beginners
Carefully vacuum out the dust bunnies and cat fur about once a year. Every month or so gently wipe the exterior clean using Windex.
Capacitors drying out in an old amp
Quado, in 1999 I replaced the Mallory brand, computer grade, large can electrolytic caps in a circa 1985 Threshold S/300 Series II. I stuck with the same brand and capacitance value although many prefer to enhance it. The change was easy and requi...
What numbers are important in SS amps specs
Agree completely with Viridan. Weight is important, say at least 50 pounds. Also look for rows of external heat sinks. They're not cheap and so won't find their way onto underperforming equipment.
Philips Transport Remote Open Button ???
My guess is the contacts on the circuit traces under the disc button are contaminated. I've had luck restoring them with a non-abrasive car wax like Meguiar's. Try isopropyl alcohol first, but if it won't dissolve the crusty carbon(?) buildup go f...
Best digital cable to audition?

Expert Glare Tamer Required And More Depth Please
The flat image I got running a Nakamichi CD Player 2 by itself went away when I added a Theta Pro Prime IIa DAC. Glare vanished when I went from a Forte F44 to a Threshold FET ten preamp. I've since moved on but that's what happened here. Have pat...
Any good Contemporary Christian recordings
Check out Wishbone Ash' album Argus from 1972.
"new" Joni Mitchell album
Your disappointment registers some deja vu here. However, any disc from the usually quite well done recycler Rhino label may have served to tipoff a savvy buyer. One also might imagine an extensive Joni collector would have his/her pulse on her ca...
Nelson Pass and Forte
Here's some sketchy evidence for you:Per a factory sales brochure, "The Forte Model 40 was developed by Nelson Pass to combine..." And from Audio magazine, November 1991, "The model 4 (power amp) was designed by a team led by Nelson Pass..."That s...
Asymmetrical speaker wire arrangement issues?
My one time KEF speaker owner's manual suggested excess wire be arranged "concertina fashion." I think this means folded back and forth like an accordion instead of neatly coiled. However gently folding usually makes the wire spring in all directi...
Speaker Wire for a non-anal listener
In the year 2000 while in cheapskate mode, I opted for a roll (50 feet?) of Radio Shack 14 gauge flat speaker wire ($20), part no. 2781273. Also 12 or 16 gauge gold spades ($5 for four) part nos. 2780311 or 2780316. My splurge included their crimp...
