Transformer volume control with Tubes/Quads?
TVC's, in my experience, are more sensitive to the source than the amp. If the source has an output impedance (Zout) less than 200, has a Vout higher than the sensitivity of the amp and is DC coupled, there shouldn't be a problem.
Power Cord for Power Conditioner
I would highly recommend an aftermarket power cord if the stock ones aren't long enough.
Which balanced crossover fits with Apogee FR's?
The only OTHER active crossover made specifically for magnetic planar drivers was the Wisdom DAB-1 (Digital Active Brain), which was incredibly complex and powerful. Good luck finding one of those.
Which balanced crossover fits with Apogee FR's?
Of all the analog xovers I've seen, only the Pass and Krell seem to be internally balanced, and I'm not 100% sure about even those. Most that do offer XLR input/outputs are "servo" or transformer balanced, including Bryston, Marchand and all the p...
Do you ever doubt you ears ?
Compared to my brother, who has trained his ears for decades as an audio engineer/designer, my ears are crap. What's annoying is that he understands why.
Does long hair destroy the soundstage?
Explains why metal is so loud and they're shaking their heads around.
Active filter for B&W matrix 800

Aragon 4004 Amplifier as Mono Block?
The Palladium is a bridged monoblock but they run a much lower rail voltage and are very conservatively rated for low impedance loads. Obviously, not 4X the power, so detuned for reliability.
sibilence....any cures out there?
Before you get too carried away, do the positioning thing. Then try different speaker wires. I was surprised with relatively inexpensive speaker cables from Ultimate that took over from the very cheap temporary ones when I had moved and required e...
A new take on built in room treatments?
You said you wanted diffusive materials. I'm thinking bamboo halfs or slats vertically on the wall. Maybe even cut into patterns if you're ambitious. Even seen it done on ceilings. Along the same lines, there's also decorative molded/embossed 3D p...
A new take on built in room treatments?
Bamboo... lightweight, fire-resistant, diffractive. Lots of options/colours but looks a bit "tiki".
Is equal gain OK for bi-amping?
Before we start on amps, what are the speakers? If it's a 2-way, chances are biamping is a waste of time because the crossover is too high to be of any benefit. Even on a 3-way, anything over 300 Hz, is getting uncomfortably into the sensitive mid...
help me to understand the gain
Couldn't find the Vout spec (or any others) on the Maverick DAC. If it's over 2V, that could be the problem. On a Monarchy DAC, it had an internal dip switch for 3V/6V output. High output is typical for DAC/preamps with a volume control.
Can I swap a Stepped Attenuator for a Potentiomer?
Tripped over this lately.http://www.analogmetric.com/category.php?id=29
System versus live
Against amplified concerts, system easily. Against a piano or violin in a small room, system nowhere close. Then again, have one Marcia Ball CD that comes pretty close. No interest in chamber ensembles anyhow. The music I listen to gets amplified....
