electrostats vs ribbon drivers
I think you're bored and trying to be controversial. Silly in any type of generalization.
best wood for speaker cabinets ? oak, cherry, balti
A fairly new and non-traditional alternative is bamboo plywood. Not expensive, fairly dense, and a bit "greener".http://www.calibamboo.com/bambooplywood.html
What would happen if Maggie and Wilson Mated?
By 2020, the Maggie 20.9b in Ferrari red for 100K.
Room Treatment for Corners - Recommendations?
Since it hasn't been mentioned yet, Ready Acoustics has it's "nest" corner mounts.
Cheapest way to ship large speakers?
With Fedex and UPS, you run into "dimensional weight", which may be 3 cubic feet or some maximum height (40"?) and can easily double the costs. Found that DHL is easier and cheaper on bigger packages. Although, not sure how cooperative it is on th...
Magnepan 1.6 active 24db slop better than stock?
Don't have an issue with op-amps but doesn't it make sense. in general, that two in series will be twice as noisy as one? Whether that's noticeable depends on the implementation.
Magnepan 1.6 active 24db slop better than stock?
Do a search over at the "Asylums". Some suggest asymmetric slopes or xover points. With the Rane, or other 'pro' analog xovers, steeper curves than 12dB/octave are cascaded and introduce more noise.
Speaker with most dynamic PUNCH?
Line arrays are usually 2-way. Seven feet tall but answers your question.
Is true-biamping now cheaper and easer?
After agreeing with Kal, my first question would be: What are you biamping? If it's a 2-way, the passive at about 2KHz probably isn't as "awful" as you think and an "off-the-shelf" active crossover can be just as bad or worse. Besides, the power re...
What do you think of this preamp design?
After a little bit of research, this I/V volume/gain control is based on a "Gilbert cell" and is available in CMOS in something like a AD835, although I have no idea of what is used in the Audio gd, PS Audio and Ayre VGT (KX-R) circuit. The advant...
What do you think of this preamp design?
Looks a bit like PS Audio's gain cells but more complex and less "empty" box.
active or passive preamp for active speakers
It's not a simple job. The aspect you're forgetting is control in the electrical sense. Impedance, cables, that sort of stuff. The other thing is that you will likely have to convert from RCA inputs to XLR outputs.
active or passive preamp for active speakers
Active is not ideal and never will be. Sorry, had to say it.Passives are system dependent. Some people select surrounding components around them wisely. Some get lucky. Some, usually the most vocal about it, don't get lucky. Although, if you've se...
SS amps with little or NO feedback
If you're going to be influenced by topology and advertising slogans, may I also suggest getting a differentially balanced amplifier along with "NNFB". At least that will eliminate the second harmonic and leave you with primarily third harmonic.
Talk Thunder 6
Still using the 3.1B. Kind of amazing, with all those separate transformers and power supplies, that big Anagram board, then going through that rudimentary output. But I'm not arguing that it works fine.
