How do you judge your system's neutrality?
FWIW, Mr T started out talking about 'neutrality' being an absolute (like the word 'unique' perhaps) and I happen to agree with him. You do not modify an absolute term. It is or it ain't, at least according to my old English teacher who reprimande...
Who was the best jazz guitarist ever?
Orpheus10, Have you tried Charlie Byrd yet? He played a lot of Latin American music. No claim that he was the 'best' but he certainly was good and got a lot down. Check him out via Google and see if anything interests you.
cayinA100 T tube amp
Kiwi, You should have listened to these integrated amps with your excellent pre-amp before you made your observations. You might be surprised. BTW, do you think your preferences may have been more the result of speaker matching than any anything e...
ARC SP8 as Phono Stage
Re SP10II line stage and assumedly the SP8 as well. I was able to do some A/B of the line stage with a passive line stage as well as another less pretentious tube line stage. With the passive line stage, as well as the lesser tube line stage, the ...
Great and well-recorded jazz on CD
Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor, recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1985. A two CD re-issue on Blue Note. He is accompanied by Ron Carter (one of my favorites) on the bass and Al Foster on the drums. This is, IMHO, great stuff. Sorry for ...
Popping noises
Yes. It could be JJ's. I've had noisy ones. But as often as not with newer tubes it was a seating/contact problem. One of the reasons I suggested that as a probable issue for you was the appearance of the noise during warm up but not continually t...
Popping noises
Could be just a bad connection developing between tube pins and socket connection. Try removing and re-seating the tubes, power and small tubes. If you can identify the specific tube, and you might do this by rotating tubes from channel to channel...
Need help with Jazz
Some up-beat jazz singers that might interest you. Amongst some of the contemporary singers I really enjoy are ReneMarie, Mary Stallings, and Laverne Butler. They have each recorded several CD's for MaxJazz. Great stuff to my ears.
Need some Jazz recommendations..some pop and swing
Jazz with a swing influence, up beat. My favorite for that would be Scott Hamilton. He recorded a lot of stuff for Concord Jazz. Excellent recordings as well. You might do well to find a copy of AMG's All Music Guide to Jazz. It is an excellent and...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
Learsfool, I think you are absolutely correct. I could go on ad nauseum, but suffice it to say that I see only one term when talking about electric signals, 'harmonic distortion', with the word 'distortion' being a noun and 'harmonic' being an adj...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
Hi Mr T,As I have said in a post previous to the one you have quoted, my only hope when I listen to recorded music is to hear something that sounds natural, consonant with that which I would experience live. My live experiences leave me with littl...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
Mapman, FWIW, I agree with your first two sentences. I think tonal differences in speakers can easily be effected by enclosure design, speaker selection, and crossover design. Except for those speakers which have been intentionally designed to use...
What is “warmth” and how do you get it?
Bryon, Re Room treatments/tuning, like everything else in audio, ain't a Sunday walk in the park with a pretty girl.Depends on what you are trying to change to create 'warmth'. In this post I will assume that 'warmth' means unemphasized highs with...
System Synergy
I also agree with Byroncunningham's observations except that I think it omits an important initial step, that is determining which type of speaker (dynamic, horn, planer, electrostat) is most likely to produce the type of sound and 'sound-stage' t...
Most Challenging CD
Dafos IMHO has its most lasting quality in the cut with the crashing bass drum. When your system replicates the sound in one of the cuts on side two, I forget which, clearly for what it is, not just a big unmusical sound, you're well on your way t...
