Review: Oracle Audio Alexandria Turntable
I agree with you re the value of this table and arm combo - I've used the exact combo in a second system for the past 15(?) years. Great value and dammed good sound. Mine came with a "black box" which was supposed to smoothout the fluctuations in ...
Your Favorite Chet Baker Recording
Well, I'm probably odd man out, his voice to me is a distraction, but I love his playing - I have two Riverside recordings (LP or CD) "Chet Baker" and "Lerner & Loewe", which minimize the vocals, that I can recommend.
Which speakers excel at low volume?
My Quad 63's do a very good job at low levels, much better than my cone speakers. In fact if I didn't want the dynamics that cones bring the Quads would go back into the system.
When to replace tubes on a CD player?
When they become noisy or the high's/upper mid range becomes dullish, that is they lose the luster inherrent in tubes.
VTA - High, Low, Where You go?
Dougdeacon, No need for that but you might warn us if you have those thick non- audiophile amplifiers old folks stick in their ears! :-)
VTA - High, Low, Where You go?
Twl, great post - Risch's comments should be manditory reading for all, not just newbies. Although I have always referred to SRA as VTA for simplicity as the adjustment mechanism for SRA and VTA is the same, correct SRA with a line stylus is what ...
Maximum distance from my monitors
In my experience the best sound, not considering placement for bass excess or reinforcement, I have always enjoyed dynamic speakers with the chair on about a 6 to 5 ratio, that is if 10 feet apart, then you head would be about 12 feet back. In you...
Where do you draw the line???
Slappy - good comments, pretty much on the mark I think. Maxxc's comments effectively define his mind set and to my way of thinking make him sound like a jealous "have not" who has insufficent experience to make any judgments of value of interest ...
How long did it take to get your dream system?
After 15 years I felt finished, and actually I haven't bought anything major in five years. I'm quite content now, but I still read the ads. Oh well....

Where do tubes matter most???
Tubes in the pre-amp are easier to do and maintain, but the biggest difference in sound is, IMHO, found in the amp. I have an all tube system and I have to admit that I could use a good passive or a neutral ss preamp without loosing much but I jus...
I have figured out the upgrade itch
I agree with you to a point - you seem to distinguish between critical listening for the sound of the components and "serious" listening which includes listening to music while doing other things, such as reading. How about introducing a third typ...
Operas... Any fans?
Great recommendations!
Am I imagining things?
Sound's like you want some good old fashion lower-mid range warmth that many, but not all, tube amps bring (along with those airy highs. Dumb question - why not just buy a tube amp. If there really was such a thing as a SS amp which sounded like a...
Listening to ALL your music
From my point of view life is too short to impose such a task onto yourself. While I wholeheartedly agree with you about the time wasted listening to the sound of your system as opposed to the music, don't waste more time listening to music you do...
