The best DAC for the money For the money you can't beat a Cal Audio Alpha. I see them used for 350+/- reguarily. This tube DAC has a slightly forward midrange and is just magnificent for vocals and small jazz groups. I prefer it in that aspect to my BAT.
What was your first system, & did you like it? The first system I really "put together" consisted of An Apt Holman pre amp, Hatachi 7500 Mos Fet amp, Rectilinear 7's speakers, Technics 1200 Turntable & Shure V series cartridge, Sansui Tuner, and a Teac 10 1/2" R2R. Just loved it - then I s...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital? Plato, Everytime I had a a clean and undamaged disc skipping problem I utimately traced it to the CDP or transport I was using. It needed cleaning, repairs or replacements. Take those bad CD's some where and see if they skip on other players. I ha...
100w class A or 200 w class AB ???? I always thought that the benefit of Class A over Class AB was that, apart from the build factor, was the elimination of distortions due to the switching from Class A to Class B when you reach the limits of Class A in any particular design. Did I ...
Rediscovering the Joy of Digital? Plato, You put your post in the right forum this time! It was clear that you were set up for an assignation when you posted in the analog columm where the vinylphiles rule with a heavy hand. It has happened to others before you - been there, where...
About Tubes......... As far as I know EL34's are interchangable. It's mostly about experimenting with your particular amp and having some idea about what you are trying to improve. I have no experience with your amps at all, with stock tubes or otherwise. But, before I...
something is wrong here, but what is it? Interesting. How have you connected the CJ 10a to the PF R? Did you go from tape out to a line in?
Is this the best analog has to offer? Jyprez, I did a Google check and found a brief article about turntable set up which might peak your interest and add some to your knowledge of basic turntable set up. If you are interested, its an Audio & Music Bulletin. The web site is WWW.xs...
Is this the best analog has to offer? I belong to the "adjust the VTA school" of thought. You mentioned that the "dry, zippy, buzzy" sounds did not occur on all LP's. Perhaps the difference is caused by the thickness of the records and the good sound is coming from one particular thic...
The Sound of Tubes Going Bad? The crackling sound sounds like small tubes in the amp. If it crackles after you engage mute it is. If it doesn't then its in the preamp. Since its in both channels I'd replace the small tubes in the offending device. That might well also correct ...
Jazz recommendations for a beginner? Ben, Firstly let me say that I addressed my comments to you because of earlier comments you made several years ago and which are referred to in this thread. You undoubtedly have a great depth of knowledge on this subject and I should think we woul...
Jazz recommendations for a beginner? Ben, just what in your estimation defines traditional jazz? I'm curious, not that I don't appreciate Davis, Coltrane, etc, but I certainly found them to be an acquired taste, and not necessarily mainstream, either now or in the era when they perfo...
Jazz recommendations for a beginner? For singers, if you like Krall, you'll love Shirley Horn, she is a bit slower, but eminently a better jazz singer and piano player than Krall. For piano try Bill Evans. For Sax try Houston Persons and Scott Hamilton. For guitar try Joe Pass. For c...
Subwoofer, Active Vs. Passive Actives are cheaper and are not necessarily worse than passives. If you want a passive you will need to buy a good amp and a crossover, plus more cables. When you plug in the price of a good amp & cross over, you'd probably find some fairly de...
Where is my weakest link? Semi, before you buy expensive cables I encourage you to experiment more with placement. In my experience your listening position should be further out into your room, like 4 to 4 1/2 feet (sort of matching your speakers). I would buy a Radio Shac... |
