Should Genesis V's be toed-in?
Some manufacturers recommend pointing the speakers straight ahead due to the dispersion pattern of the drivers, that is they are actually smoother off axis. Warnerwh has hit on an excellent way of avoiding 1st reflections and still pointing the sp...
Which components knocked you out on first listen?
Quad ESL 63's, properly set up and powered with tubes, in a large room - Jazz at the Pawn Shop on a Linn 12 and a Grace F9E. Talk about dimensional with the "you are there" feeling! Been trying to duplicate that sound for years, got all the gear, ...
Quad ESL 63 in smallish room ?
Well, 11.5 ft isn't too much but it could work. They can be placed close the side walls without creating destructive lst reflections. You don't specify how long your room is so I can't comment about the "5'out" set up, but it does sound as if your...
How to set the Dunlavy SC-IV signature correctly
Go to Audio Asylum - look under FAQ's - there are several different methods for speaker placement outlined there, including one by Mr Dunlavy (which by the way has never worked for me). My room is almost exactly the size of yours - I have found th...
Integrated Amp -- $1,500 or less.
There is an EAR 834I for sale now for $1500. If you can put up with tubes, this is one supurb integrated. I use the 834L line stage in a 2d system and love it - tonally it sounds very much like my ARC sp10. If I were to downsize this would be #1 o...
Differences in sound CAL Icon, Sigma, Alpha ?
Can't speak to the Icon, but I have both the Sigma and the Alpha, which are very close tonally, so close that I doubt your could tell them amart on casual listening. However the Alpha is better resolved, detail wise, and does a bit better at imagi...
Recommendation - Complete Beethoven Sonatas
For the entire set on CD's I think I'd go for Brendel or Goode. Both have an excellent grasp of these sonatas, and both received excellent reviews. My prime choice woould be Goode.
Preamp for Clayton Audio S40?
Bombaywalla - I read the article. Personally, I thought the reviewer was over the top in recommending a SS pre amp just because of a potential, and slight, electrical mismatch might occur if the user wasn't mindful in selecting the pre-amp. IMHO t...
Preamp for Clayton Audio S40?
Bombaywalla, For the record,I think you got it backwards - a high imput impedence in an amp is an important criteria for most tube pre amps. 47K or higher should work fine with just about any tube pre amp.
Budget cable for tubes
If it matches your cartridge electrically, I'd try some Cardas - its reasonably priced. I use it on one of my tables with an MC cartridge.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart...RIP
Mozart, hmmmmmm, is he the guy that wrote the music they used in Elvira Madigan? Nice stuff. :-)
Which Beethoven's symphony do you like the best?
Eldartford, Since you are, in fact, quite familar with classical music, wouldn't your point have been better expressed if you had voiced specific critisms, as opposed to making generic expressions, such as "over-rated", etc which when read by novi...
Which Beethoven's symphony do you like the best?
Tubegroover, Interesting comparison - when I hear The "ode" I think that he must have inspired Mahler to write his 2d, another great, dramatic, choral/orchestral ending.
Which Beethoven's symphony do you like the best?
Nickalu, Love them all, but the two I listen to most often are #5 and #7 as done by Carlos Kleiber on DG. Just let'um rip. Totally engaging, foot tapping music!
Which Beethoven's symphony do you like the best?
Eldartford, It is one thing to say you do not like Beethovens 9th, or any of the rest of his symphonies for that matter. But, to dismiss them as valueless, not just to you, but in general, does in fact make your opinion a humble one and of little ...
