Why do preamplifiers have so many capacitors? If the pre has a phono preamp section, caps are needed for the RIAA equalization which has a 40 dB bass to treble swing in its curve in order to get the signal back to a flat response. Tone control circuits also need caps.
Which is better: Spendor BC1, SP1/2, or SP2/3. I've owned both the SP1/2E SP 3/1 speakers. I greatly preferred the 1/2E. Note that sweet spot of the classic Spendors is very small, but vocals do sound wonderful if you sit in the right spot.
Ohm Acoustic Corp., Brooklyn NY I can't imagine anyone who wants the sonic presentation of a pair of omnis like Ohm could be happy with Cornwalls. Apples and oranges, as they say. I have a set of Ohms and find them immensely enjoyable -- no urge for any changes. As others hav...
Yep much to do about nothing. Fear brains. @ghasley "Regarding formula, where did the vikings get their formula? What on earth did babies consume prior to Similac(sp?)." Used to be the death rate among newborns in centuries past was extremely high, up to 50% or so. That is one of the fact...
Bel Canto E one C5i Integrated Amp power question I had a C5i for several years. I liked it a lot. As others have noted, whether or not it has enough power depends on your desired listening volume in combination with your room size. (Bigger rooms need more power than a smaller one to reach the s...
Bryston Bda3 vs 3.14 Streamer I understand the main difference between the Bryston 3 and 3.14 is the latter includes a built-in Raspberry Pi computer board to handle the streaming. You could just buy an RPi separately with a case and add the same streaming capabilities to you...
Who actually uses digital speakers? While there are certainly a few out there, I suspect not many "audiophiles" use active speakers. One of the most important and enjoyable aspects of this hobby for people who call themselves audiophiles is the mixing and matching of various compon...
Schiit Aegir pre-amp recommendation I have an Aegir that I really enjoy. It was originally paired with a Saga+ but the problem is that, as only a unity gain preamp, it was just a bit short in reaching my desired listening volume (about 85 dB max) even though the amp had power still ...
everything sounded great until the upgrade Assuming the new amp is not defective or incorrectly setup, it sounds like your new amp is just a mismatch for the rest of your system. You said you loved the sound of your old system. Can you go back to your old amp? Was the purchase of the new ...
Gapless I use the LMS server software on my PC with a Raspberry Pi streamer running a Squeezelite player and have no problem with gapless playback.
Inexpensive headphone amplifier while I don't have a Vali, I have several other pieces of Schiit gear and really like the way they approach things, and their sound quality is excellent, especially so for the price points of their various units. The ONLY drawback I've bumped in...
bulbs Forget the cost of the bulb. I have no clue as to how hard it is to get to the bulb. I had a friend some years ago who had a car where they had to undo the engine mounts and hike up the engine to change the spark plugs. Not too much for parts, bu...
The sound quality from DACs - is it all the same? No urge to debate anyone, but in any event, that bit perfect data has to be translated into analog. That's what "DAC" stands for -- "Digital to Analog Converter." My two cents is its the analog section that has the biggest impact on sound. Even ...

Need some help- Speaker choice for Schiit Aegir+ Freya+ I have a pair of Ohm 1000s in a room a shade larger than yours and use an Aegir with a Lyr as a preamp and am very pleased with the sound. While I'm not in a condo, I'm not a head-banger and 85 dB or so is my max volume. The Aegir gets there nicel... |
