Is it the tube pre or the rca/xlr adapter?
This comment is limited to the adaptor question. I have a Lamm LP2 phono amp, single ended outputs only, and a Rowland Synergy IIi preamp, balanced inputs and outputs only. I directly compared two pairs of Purist Dominus cables between them, RCA c...
When does SACD make sense - my theory
Sorry, don't agree you can generalize this way. You're selling good SACD short. Audiophile quality LPs will usually sound better than SACds, but not always. SACD reissues of ordinary decent or not so decent LPs--e.g. most of the 60-70s Columbia ca...
SACD a 5.1 medium?
All the multichannel SACDs work fine in two channel, and as far as I'm concerned are a very significant advance over regular CD playback. Upconversion to 24/192 cuts the degree of improvement over CD playback, but not the fact that it is there.
Vinyl manufacturers don't stand behind product?
I find very few defectives, but I've never had a dealer refuse to replace one. That includes 5 or 6 different mail order dealers, and Classic Records is also particularly good about returns.
Sony SCD-1 vs. SCD-777ES
The XLR outputs on theSCD-1 are a convenience; they're not really balanced. A power supply difference is the reason for the difference in weight between the units. Although it doesn't seem to be because of XLR vs. RCA reasons, I heard a definite, ...
SACD - what gives?
Well, I don't completely agree or disagree with anyone. I have a pretty high end system, so I feel I can comment on each medium as played back through some of the best representative equipment around. As to software, things are getting much better...
Premier Redbook CD Transport or SACD Player?
I recommend an SACD player which has a particularly good transport section. The original Sony SCD-1 had a transport section which beat my Levinson easily, and the friend who bought it from me says he would place it between the two CEC's in quality...
problem with levinson no 37?
Mstram: see my comment above. This is exactly what happened to me. The same discs would play perfectly first in my Marantz CD burner, and later in my Sony SCD-1. They still play perfectly in my Classe Omega. I never figured out what the problem wa...
Isolation for turntable
I use a Signal Guard II isolation platter, which has spiked feet, and Aurios Pros under each spike. The isolation is almost total. Same for my SACD player/CD transport.
Floorstanders on wood floor, help
I second the Aurios recommendation, but you need the Pro version under speakers.
floorstanders on carpet over concrete
You might try a set of Aurios Pros under the speaker spikes, four to a speaker. They will certainly isolate the speakers from the concrete floor, and clean up the bass. Not inexpensive, but what tweak is these days? Audionuts is one dealer which c...
The British speaker sound: Tannoy, Harbeth, etc...
I doubt that "British sound" means much of anything specific any more, at least as to larger floor-standing models. B & W's top models long since departed from the classic British sound; KEF seems to be moving in the same direction; and from w...
Best high current SS Mono amps
You might try the Classe CAM-350's, a real bargain ($7,000 pair new). These are dead quiet, high current, 350-watt channel monoblocks, and sound as good on my Andra II's, which are very efficient, as they did on the original Andras, which simply a...
SS preamp to replace BAT VK3i w/ht bypass
Second the recommendation of the Rowland Synergy IIi.
Which is the best preamp for my amps.
I agree with Timo. But as a Rowland Synergy IIi owner, I can tell you that, if you do audition that preamp, there are two secrets about it you need to know: (1) If you do a comparison with other preamps, boost the gain on all of the Synergy's inpu...
